Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Best of luck to Miller!!! He TOTALLY deserves it, and I'm sure everyone at DU is quite happy for him. Honestly, I was thinking that it was probably a little weird for him to work under a younger head coach, after working for Gwoz for 20 years. We have great memories for Miller's time at DU--2 national titles, and all the awesome players he recruited. Thanks, and good luck to him!!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Not liking and not understanding are two different things.

Exactly.

I have never seen a shootout live. When the wife and I had Avs tickets, we used to make it a point to walk out before the shootout. Hell, I never watched it on TV until last season when my 2 year old made me not change the channel. The shootout is a "forced" win where there does not need to be one. I wrote out a whole rant that went on and on, and lucky for everyone I just erased it. Anyhow, I will never watch a shootout live and will walk out every one if DU (or any other team) forces one.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Echo the sentiments below. Wish Miller the best, sad to see him leave, but happy for him and his new opportunity. Article on USHL website said he would be staying with the Pioneers through the calendar year and going to Madison in January.

I like the captain choices, particularly Didier.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Like the shootout and the idea it puts butts in the seats? Tell the NCHC to put the shootout at the beginning of the game. Get everyone in the seats at the beginning of the game. Give a half point to the winner of the shootout.

Advantages:
1. Gets seats filled at the beginning.
2. If you are behind near the end of the game or OT, you will play your butts off to win.
3. Keeps seats filled at the end of the game.

Disadvantages:
1. It is the shootout after all.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

That's great for Miller. He has very deep claws in the USHL. Hopefully he will be out there pimping DU for future recruits. I would expect to see the USHL pipeline strengthen for Denver in the coming years - with Montgomery's success in Iowa, Lalonde and Carle's efforts up in Green Bay, and now Miller in Madison. So Miller is gone immediately, I take it?

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Big lose for DU. He was the guy who recruited a long list of amazing talent. He has such great relational skills with the student athletes--they really respect him. Great pick-up for the new team in Madison. Well deserved. Break a leg Steve!

Kind of feels like ripping the band-aid off the Gwoz wound. OUCH!

Shootouts !?!?

CHL@CHLprohockey
Two wins and an 18-round marathon shootout  earn Kieran Millan (DEN Cutthroats) Oakley Goalie of the Week! fb.me/MvOEHr30

Millan from BU-- won the 2010 Frozen Four--was in goal when BU won the Wells Fargo Cup by beating the Pios and a Draft Choice of the Avs.

Yep. Here's the text and a link to the full article.

Miller and his wife, Heidi, have three children, daughter Alexis (13), and sons, Cole (11) and Connor (9). He plans to finish the calendar year at the University of Denver and begin his duties in Madison in January.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

We have Tri-Captains Plus Sam

Senior defenseman David Makowski, junior defenseman Josiah Didier of Littleton and junior wing Zac Larraza will don the letter, with senior goalie Sam Brittain unofficially serving as the fourth captain.
"Sam Brittain would be a clear-cut captain in this group, but I'm a traditionalist and believe a goalie should just focus on stopping pucks and not worry about what's going on at the bench or other areas of the ice," Montgomery said.

Previous Tri-Captains

In the '70-'71 season, Murray Armstrong apparently couldn't settle on a captain and designated captains on a game-by-game basis. I'm not sure how many different players actually served as a captain that season but, from what I have heard, every senior was a captain at some point.

Think you may be off by a year:
1969-70 Rich Blanche (c), Al Genovy (c), Tom Gilmore (c), Ed Hamilton (c), Gerry Jonasson (c), Don Thiessen (c)
Must be the entire Senior Class. Back in the "good ol' days" only 3 years of eligibility. This class had already won 2 National Championships. What's left for the resume--being a team Captain.:)
