Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Here's a link to Jim Montgomery's teleconference from last week. I haven't listened to it and have no plans to do so. If you listen to it let us know if there's any earth-shaking news in it.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

I really liked that teleconference. I'd like to see that also done mid-year, like around the holidays too. Anyone can ask a question. Mitch Hyder was a great moderator. Jay Stickney and those other TV guys would be too opinionated, for a forum like this, in my opinion. Plus no press or media questions. It's a step in the right direction. I'd like to have all the coaches on the call.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Mike Szmatula has been the main topic of discussion today. Until Northeastern releases him or not it's all speculation.

In the interest of full disclosure, Szmatula was arrested in Nov. 2012 for a minor in posession of alcohol.
Now we have the maybe, possible, future DU one, who could be placed on the Bad Boyz list along with the North Dakota 4 or 6 or duplicate offenders who had the same violation during the last season.

Which raises an interesting philosophical/legal question: does bad boy behavior committed before he's officially a Pioneerelkjackalopemountainclimberoxlabradorretriever count? Would he get an asterisk?

I have a feeling that the phrase "200 foot hockey" is going to become extremely familiar.

Looks like he is going to play a very aggressive style of hockey. The dmen are all going to have to be skaters. Looks like he is close to completing the recruiting class.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Opposed to what?

Opposed to a less aggressive style with the team allowing the opponent to enter the neutral and offensive zone more easily. He spoke of a very aggressive offensive forecheck to keep the opponent penned in their own zone. He wants to make it very difficult for an opponent to enter each zone. By putting pressure on the opponent he wants to create turnovers all over the ice. He is looking for 25 to 30 second shifts and will roll 4 lines and 6 d.

Is there a coach that advocates another style? Does anyone advocate a hands off approach as to checking, allowing the other team to set up scoring opportunities and turning over the puck in every zone? To recruit guys that can’t skate? :p DU should take it one game at a time. DU has to find a way to put the puck in the net. DU has to find a way to put more points up than the other team.

How about the trap which allows a team to come out of their own zone unchecked until the redline? That is a very passive and boring style of play.

It was interesting to me, expanding on what '78 said, that Montgomery specifically said that teams can't afford too many stay at home defensemen these days, and that he doesn't envision having more than one of those on the team.

BBM, '78 was saying what Montgomery said, and he said it quite clearly and concisely. Everyone one here, including you, understood exactly what he meant. I actually felt that Montgomery did a good job of saying that the style of play is going to be more aggressive in the future without necessarily saying that Gwoz coached a bit of a passive style at times. But I think many people on here occasionally expressed frustration at what was sometimes a bit of a passive style of play.

Hopefully, Montgomery will get results approaching those of Gwozdecky.

Northeastern will not let Szmatula out of his NLI !
An interesting decision.

Looking at it from their (Northeastern's) perspective, since they have had several players poached out from under LOIs in recent years, it's pretty hard to blame them for putting a foot down and announcing to the country that it's not ok to "steal" all their best recruits. On the other hand, they have to hope that the kid is mature enough to understand that he made a decision, and all they are doing is holding him to it, and hopefully (again, from their perspective) this won't affect his play. If he is mature enough, he will realize that more important than playing for one coach or another at one school or another is creating the best opportunity to play professionally, which means playing his heart out every game for whoever he plays for. Sometimes, that's a lot to hope of a 20-year-old. I glanced at his twitter page, and he seems to be a pretty religious kid, which might be good and it might be bad. (I say it might be bad because sometimes those who wear their religion this publicly turn out to be Hypocrites.)

From our perspective, it is always a bummer to miss out on a good recruit, although if Montgomery did break the rules (and contrary to what certain posters would have us believe, that is not a certainty) that really isn't something that I, as a fan, would wish to encourage

What that means is if Szmatula wants to go play for Denver, the only option he has is to transfer there. He'll have to sit out 2013-14.

From the NU thread--Northeastern has lost more than 1 recruit recently--Gaudreau to BC, Gillies to Quinnipiac, Askew(incoming) to BU and possibly QMJHL and somebody to Brown. Sounds like a lot more poaching on the East Coast. WHY?
Mixed opinion on releasing Szmatula.
Two other players from Dubuque coming in this fall.
Roster was announced 6/5, 2 days before this came up.

BTW, Dubuque was holding their tryouts while Montgomery was there.
I really hope Szmatula approached Coach. Verbal commitments are one thing (and not sure what good they are), but after a NLI is signed only extraordinary events should circumvent it. IMHO

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

No matter what style the new coach brings; regardless of what recruit commits or de-commits - the existing upperclassmen at DU absolutely need to get their PIM under control, and stay out of the *** penalty box. There's no way they can continue down that rough path with any success. One may argue that with Mayfield gone, problem solved; but trust me, he was not the only one. Denver needs to quit it with the ridiculous penaltys.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Another player from Dubuque just committed to Denver for this fall. Evan Janssen has committed to Monty.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

As classy as tampering.
You know, when you come into this thread and repeatedly accuse our new coach of cheating, you might want to have some evidence. Otherwise, you're just another stupid dick sucker. (And no, the attempt to decommit is not, in and of itself, evidence. A lot of players at all levels would like to continue playing for the same coach at the next level. It's possible that this 20-year-old who apparently doesn't understand what the word commitment means thought of staying with Montgomery all by his lonesome.)

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Former CC player Scott Winkler passed away today at age 23. Our prayers go out to the entire CC family.
