Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Back to Pioneer Hockey--
It is June and there has been only 1 mention of who will be the DU Captain next year and who do we expect to be skating in October. And do we have a goalie to back up Sam Brittain?

First, let's look at the team and expected incomimg Frosh:

Seniors
1 G Sam Brittain
10 D David Makowski

Juniors
4 D Josiah Didier
19 F Daniel Doremus
14 F Larkin Jacobson
21 D Joey LaLeggia
16 F Zac Larraza
12 F Ty Loney
25 F Matt Tabrum
(No Mermis)

Sophomores
17 F Garrett Allen
39 F Grant Arnold
9 F Gabe Levin
27 F Quentin Shore
8 D Nolan Zajac

Incoming Freshmen
*D Will Butcher (U.S. Under-18)
*D Matt Van Voorhis (Sioux Falls, USHL)
*F Brad Hawkinson (Lincoln Stars, USHL)
*F Trevor Moore (Tri-City, USHL)
F Landon Smith (Chicago, USHL)
F Connor Chatham (Omaha, USHL)
F Ray Pigozzi (Chicago, USHL)
D Nick Neville (Texas, NAHL)
F Evan Janssen (Dubuque,USHL)
*NLI signed

No word on an incoming Goalie!

So that leaves the question of next year's Captain ripe for discussion.

Consider:
  • No returning Alternate Captain
  • Only 2 Seniors
  • One Senior is the Goalie who usually don't wear the "C"
  • Knowledge of team dynamics--anyone?
  • New Coach--does he select or let the team elect?
]

2 Goalies are coming including one who is expected to push Sam for the starting job.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

We have enough trouble putting up with CC rope smokers and UND lawn mower throwers.

I almost just spit orange juice on my keyboard there!!

Can someone remind me of the players we have lost including those who bailed since the loss of Gwoz?

1- Scott Mayfield

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Mayfield leaving had nothing to do with the coaching change. Garth Snow, Doug Holewa & Doug Weight had that planned for over a year now. He was plugged into the Islanders system for a very strategic reason.

I know they typically go with Seniors for Captain; but my vote goes to Aspen ~ Doremus. I'd like to see Daniel captain this season and also for his senior year..... assuming he lasts through his 4th year.

Thought I heard that in teleconference, but this "nervous nellie" would like to know more.(Nodak just got a commit from Cam Johnson. DU and UNO were his other 2 choices according to Schlossman.)

Dmann, we lost Mayfield, Jussi and Nick Shore.
>Mayfield was gone no matter who was coach.
>Jussi had a great opportunity with his performance from last year. When he signed on, had to get a student loan, saved our bacon with Brittain and Murray injured or recovering, and then last year--he was #1. Pretty amazing story for someone ready to get back on the plane to Finland less than 2 years ago. Timing is everything:D
>Nick Shore, maybe du78 has more info. Don't know how much the Kings pushed, but he sure didn't have the resume that Drew did. Effect of Gwoz's departure--????

Who wears the C?

Didn't we lose a recruit as well?

Yes, Gage Ausmus but he wasn't coming until 2014.

Viz, don't know much about the N. Shore situation but there was a good chance he was leaving all the time after his junior year.

Just checked capgeek and Nick is on a 2 way contract for the next 2 years at $925,000 per with no bonus. There's a bit of incentive to $ign. ;) He will have a hard road to make the NHL with the talent the Kings have.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Coach Monty's recruiting trip obviously paid off.
Looks like we have a goalie...

DU earns record fifth Learfield Sports I-AAA (non-football) Directors' Cup.
http://www.denverpioneers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=18600&ATCLID=208355972

Only 2 other schools have ever won this award:
Pepperdine University--the Waves--Willie the Wave mascot
and
University of California Irvine--the Anteaters--Peter the Eater(Anteater) mascot
Funny thing, at both schools the Admin was not happy with the mascot.
  • Changed it to rebrand athletics (Pepperdine), but Willie came back.
  • Thought it wasn't a dignified representative (UC Irvine). How about this novel idea, UCI had a student election. Anteaters was selected besting "none of the above" in 2nd.:p

Agree. However, student referenda can occasionally go horribly wrong. One year at Rice, the students elected a refrigerator as homecoming queen.

Student elections would totally get DU "off the hook" with the nutbags, because once you hold the election, its all over.

DU is so knee deep in rigging the selection that they can't bring themselves to having an election between the Elk & Boone.

...actually, it'll be Evan Cowley of Witchita (NAHL)

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Great news!!! Love those "Nawl" guys. He's a Colorado boy, too. Can't wait to hear "why" he always wanted to attend DU. I'm sure guys like Fisher, Mannino, Cheverie and Berkoehl are a big part of it; not to mention Coach Lassonde

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

GOOD NEWS!
Another article on Evan Cowley

Going from an over abundance (4) of goalies last year to 1 for this year was making me exceptionally nervous.
