Looks like Monty has flipped one of his former players to committing to DU. Mike Szmatula has decommitted from Northeastern and is supposedly going to sign with the Pioneers

He did this in the USHL as well. He was drafted by the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL but told them he wouldnt report and didnt. Dubuque brings him in latter that summer and suddenly he is on the roster. I follow the USHL very closely so I find this a joke.

A late, late bloomer who was 5th in the USHL in scoring. His stock kept going up and so did his opportunities.

Sucks for Sacred Heart and Northeastern, but these are the times we live in.

DU loses Royce O'Neal in hoops to Baylor, DU picks up Szmatula in hockey. It all evens out.

There's not much to say about sour grapes. Every school loses commitments, and every school has players bolt early.

It serves NU right for taking Kevin Roy from Brown last year. :)

Denver ahould feel very proud to have hired a coach whose first recruiting effort involved soliciting a recruit who had a signed NLI with another school. That shows a great respect for rules tradition and presages the type of guidance and leadership you can expect your program and its players. Good luck! (No, not really)

So let me get this straight. It's ok for NU to take a player from another school but not vice versa? I think he was kind of joking anyways.

Correct. I do not approve of poaching recruits. It is difficult to evaluate each situation since we never know all of the facts, and certainly we don't know all of the facts surrounding Szmatula.

I'll go back to posting more drivel now. :D

There was no NLI in that case. The ivy league has no need for them, because no one in his right mind would decommit for one of their schools!

You might give the NU fans an extra inch or two, as our program's recruits have been pillaged more than we ever would have believed possible during the past two years.
