Re: All Things Denver XXXIII

Everybody has said to do downtown if we don't have a car, but I'm assuming if we have a car or two then staying near Magness and maybe catching the rail to check out downtown is fine?

That would work. But don't pass up the Border. It's always a good idea to announce your presence by saying "I can lick any man in the house," another cherished DU tradition. There are unconfirmed reports that a couple of people have survived it.

Grant Arnold makes me think of one of my favorite history professors, Eric Arnold. I only had one survey course that he was part of the team that taught, but he was an extremely amusing guy. A buddy of mine who was a history major would make a point of taking Eric's classes. He would also hang out in his office talking about guns. To know either Eric or my buddy, neither of them seemed like "gun guys," which just goes to show you can't judge a book by it's cover.

(Just out of curiosity, I checked a little bit into Eric's family. None of his sons is named Steve (the name of Grant's father) and I would also assume that if Grant were related to a long-time DU professor, that fact would have made its way into his player bio.)

Garrett Allen is 5-time Olympic Gold Medalist Speed Skater Bonnie Blair's nephew and the cousin of former CC player Scott Polaski.

Bonnie Blair was quite the popular one in Illinois when I was in HS

If Garrett has the family "skating gene" he could be fun to watch.
Allen, Arnold, and Levin all have pretty good backgrounds even though they have been unknowns compared to Zajac, D. Mermis, and Q. Shore who all have a family connection with DU.

Seven players from Colorado on the team--is that a record?

Nope, DU has had at least 7 Colorado players since 2005/06. The most I found was 10 in 2005/06. In 2006/07 and 2011/12, DU had 8 players from Colorado.

That's just so great. And such a change from the old days. OLD PIO ANNECDOTE ALERT: In the very early days of UNO's drive to D-I (our station was angling to carry their games, and somebody I know quite well, ahem, was a candidate to do PBP) they had some sort of banquet. And I was seated at a table with (among others) a big UNO financial supporter. During the course of the evening DU came up. And he told me he had been a player until the new coach, Murray Armstrong came to town. Being from Omaha, his DU career ended abruptly, needless to say. Although he didn't seem to be carrying a grudge, I felt embarrassed with my face hanging out. Mostly, he just seemed to be making conversation. But it was still awkward.

My response was like Ralph Kramden when he was caught doing something stupid: "hamina, hamina, hamina." It probably wouldn't have been a good idea to suggest he probably skated like lava flowing uphill and shot like my grandmother and checked like Pee Wee Herman. I was definitely "flying solo."

Classic :)

19 players attended DU pro camp yesterday. Link below has some videos and interviews. Besides former DU players, a couple of CC guys were there, some other pros and Jay Meloff, the boyfriend of Jessica Ghawi (Redfield), who was killed in the Aurora theater shooting.
