Re: All Things Denver XXXI

NHL Draft Wrap-Up for DU
Four University of Denver hockey players were selected in the NHL Draft on Saturday morning at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

2nd Round/ (#34) - Scott Mayfield D, New York Islanders
3rd Round (#82) - Nick Shore C, Los Angeles Kings
4th Round (#97) - Josiah Didier D, Montreal Canadiens
7th Round (#196) - Zac Larraza RW, Phoenix Coyotes

Mayfield and Shore were picked where they were projected. Didier moved up and Larraza moved down. All in all a good draft day for the DU boys.

All four DU player will be happy at the end of the day with the teams they were drafted by. Just as important, DU should be happy because the players are in good situations to develop in college.

I think the takeaway from the draft is that all four players need to make significant progress to make NHL rosters one day.

Didier is the guy who rose the most compared to his projected ranking. He might have the biggest upside five years down the road.

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

du78 will be happy that Mayfield is going to Long Island.

Oh yeah, that puts 3 DU players in the Isles system: Rakhshani, Donovan and Mayfield. Looks like Gregoire is going to be a free agent and not sign with the Isles. My guess is he tries to sign with his hometown Jets.

Yeah, given his track record, I would be surprised if Gregoire didn't sign with Winnipeg. I'll have to keep a good eye on Mayfield this year, and will probably get to see him quite a bit as I'm planning on getting student season tickets. :p:D:D

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

I am indeed the one who has been in Alaska, although not actually northern Alaska, but I probably never said where geographically. :) I'm actually unemployed at the moment, although hopefully that situation will be rectified by fall. In any case, there is a good chance that next year I will at least be somewhere that has college hockey.

Hang in there dude! Glad to hear you should be close to college hockey for next season, and employed.

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

According to DU's countdown clock there are 94 days and some odd hours until DU's exhibition game with McGill University on October 1, 2011.

Even McGill can beat us without a goalie!!! I know, I know, we have Murray, but we need a back up. We need some big Swedish dude to come save us. Time to cash in on our Serratore 80s vintage Scandanavian contacts!!! Can you say "Wally"

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

Nice job by the coaching staff.

Now lets hope they are working on the biggest problem that has plagued the team since the '05 championship...Getting regular scoring out of the third line.

DU is deeper up front than they've been in years. Lets hope they can juggle the lines to get a more balanced attack and give the goaltenders some cushion. Ideally you'd like to find a way to get a goal scorer on the third line, but there's no Jon Foster's laying around the stable.

Zucker - D. Shore - Goal Czar

Larraza - N. Shore - B. Bennett

Mermis - Doremus - Jackson

Knowlton - Dewhurst - S. Ostrow

[Jacobson, W. Bennett, Tabrum]

I feel way out of the loop on these last three. Is W. Bennett related to B. Bennett?, please say yes!!!

Wade is Beau's older brother.

Tabrum's father was an assistant coach at Colorado College ('93-'99).

Jacobson's step-father has won two Stanley Cups ('04, '09).

Interesting connections for all three players....
