Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Michigan coughed up a 4-0 lead to Mercyhurst tonight and the game ended up a 4-4 tie

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Zucker may be DU's best Jewish hockey player since Stuart Birenbaum or perhaps Buddy Blom.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Another observation - I LOVE DU's new white uniforms this year, based on the same design as the 60th anniversary uniforms. Clean, simple retro and historic.

Yeah, they look great. As to Zucker, does that mean Rick Sanchez will want a refund on his season tickets?

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Just watched the highlights and Zucker made some really nifty moves. We may see some "Rock Trick" or "Rubber Man" highlights this year.
Nick Shore had 4 points in his debut. Bennett had multiple assists. Freshmen did themselves proud tonight.

Good to see Salazar with a point. Shawn Ostrow with 2.

Nick Shore and Matt Donovan with big 4 point nights last night.

Mike Chambers of the Denver Post in his blog had some insight into why Jackson, Wrenn and Knwolton were scratched.

UPDATE: Senior W Dustin Jackson (illness) and sophomore W Chris Knowlton (unknown) did not play and are doubtful for Sunday’s game against Lethbridge.

The D-corps isn’t a surprise. Scratched is sophomore William Wrenn, who is recovering from off-season hip surgery (UPDATE: He has a hamstring injury).

Some random thoughts after last nights game:

1) The Pios were playing 17 year olds, so don't read too much into the scoreline.

2) Most freshmen looked comfortable and effective against the younger USA guys. Zucker was a difference-maker both defensively and offensively. Very effective player who put himself into the fans' radar with a hattie. Bennett seemed a little tentative at times, and they didn't have him on the first PP unit, as might have been expected. Bennett seemed much more comfortable later in the game. Good reach, good instincts. Nick Shore was also very confident down low, and may be a better player than his brother. The "Danimal" Olezewski looked like a smaller Vossberg or Glasser - a potentially capable fourth line guy. Mermis looked overmatched in his few shifts - don't expect we'll see much of him this year. Makowski was also very effective on the defensive end for a frosh, with a real confidence with the puck. He very well might displace a veteran in the top six.

3) The two DU recruits on team USA: Zac Lazzara looked like a very good player. Murray robbed him on a great scoring chance early, and Zac looked very much like a high-end player with good hockey sense. VanVoorhis, on the other hand, had a rough game on d, and looked like a long way off from being a college player. He's a very small player, too. Hope he improves.

4) Not much output from K. Ostrow, J. Martin, Maiani and Drew Shore. These are the players who are going to need to lead this team offensively if DU is going to go anywhere this year - you can't rely on freshmen to carry the team. Hope to see a better effort from them tonight.

5) Donovan is likely the Pios' best defenseman since Matt Carle. He really looked great last night and took over the game at times. Brehm and Cook showed poorly, and will only be used in emergencies.

1. Point taken

2. The "Danimal" looked pretty involved, he may be a nice surprise. Nick Shore looked better than Drew, except on face-offs where Drew was the Animal. All the freshmen are "works in process." That said, Zucker was great.
During the game it seemed like Salazar was getting more time than Dewhurst. Maybe he's coming back.

3. Larraza was one of the better players for USA U-18.

4. Agreed! Upper classmen need to lead.

5. Donovan! We best enjoy while we can.
Not to be negative, but the best thing about Cook and Brehm is when you don't hear their names and bad turnover in the same sentence.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Just saw on DG's blog where someone was curious about when a freshman had scored a hat trick in their first game. I remember when it happened in '87-88...Rick Berens had a 4 point debut with 3 goals and an assist against, I think, UMD. Quick trivia: Who was the freshman center on his line who also had a 4 point debut, with a goal and 3 assists?

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Rakhshani sent to Bridgeport(AHL)

No surprise, he played well in training camp but wasn't getting any points. He probably needs to get a bunch of games in Bridgeport and could be an early call-up when needed. It is better for him to be a full time player in "The Bridge" than be a 4th liner or healthy scratch with the Isles.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

DU got punked tonight by a Pronghorn? Awesome! What happened up there tonight? Lethbridge was horrible down here last night. If AFA beats Lethbridge tomorrow night then maybe you guys are the #3 team in the state of Colorado now. :D  I can't wait to read DG's blog tomorrow. :p

It's a little early to be wetting yourself.
