Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Just saw on DG's blog where someone was curious about when a freshman had scored a hat trick in their first game. I remember when it happened in '87-88...Rick Berens had a 4 point debut with 3 goals and an assist against, I think, UMD. Quick trivia: Who was the freshman center on his line who also had a 4 point debut, with a goal and 3 assists?

Well, one poster nailed this in a PM. Bagman wins a prize for naming Jay Moore, who is a top-25 career scorer at DU and played almost exclusively with Berens during their careers. Not sure what, yet, but a prize nonetheless. :)

DU ranked 9th in USCHO poll.

dg, are you still going to Parlez vous in Montreal before heading to Vermont to cage a catamount?

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

More thoughts on the DU opening weekend of exhibition play:

1) I liked the quickness of DU's forwards and their abiity to get pucks deep and cycle. We'll see how it stacks up against bigger and stronger teams. There is also a high level of puck handling skills and the awareness of teammates was pretty good, even with the bad early sesaon timing issues you always see when the team has not practiced together as much.

2) Shot selection and accuracy still needs work. The team did not make life as difficult on the Lethbridge goalie as they should have.

3)Size wise, DU really doesn't have a lot of big bodies up front, so that might be an issue in the second half, when smaller players get worn-down. I also have concerns about the strength level of some of the guys. There was one 22 year old player on our team who was held down on the ice for a long time by a 17 year old player - that bugged me.

4)Defensively, I also liked the leadership shown by Lee, Nutini, Ryder and Donovan. That is going to pay dividends. They move the puck well. Makowski is very much learning to make his reads and pick spots, but the defense held the shots down all weekend, and had the goaltending been better on Saturday, that would have been a win as well.

5) Goaltending - a work in progress. Murray looked ready. Brittain didn't. Let's hope that gets sorted out. If Brittain plays at UVM, it should be a tough place to get into the rotation - let's see how he responds to some early season adversity.

6) Special teams - DU was changing the PP and PK up all weekend. I already like Zucker, Bennett and Nick Shore to be a part of it.

7) Cook, Brehm and Mermis need to be used in emergencies only. I will look look forward to seeing Jackson and Knowlton back in action.

Skinner is very much on the Amur Khabarovsk roster in the KHL:

Caldwell plays for the Kassel Huskies of the German Elite League

Halme plays for Tappara Tempere in the Finnish Elite League
I believe Max Bull has been retired for a long time.

Pettinger has also signed with Cologne in the German Elite League

Aaron Mackenzie is in Austria playing for Linz. I would think the rest will be showing up on various rosters shortly.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Thanks for the corrections and additions, ECHL rosters are still pretty slim, even some for the AHL. Hopefully we'll get to see Rakhshani, Colborne, Cheverie and Wiercioch among others take a step up later this season.

I'll wait a few days before I send an update to dg.
Besides he'll be in Montreal and Burlington frightening the natives..:D

LOL...

Great game last night for Air Force. The freshman look awesome! Interesting move for coach to play all three goalies...especially putting the freshman goalie (Torf) for the remainder of the 3rd and overtime. (no pressure on Torf...lol)

Gonna be an interesting season for Air Force...hopefully the freshman can come through...much deeper team this year!

Should be a fun series again with CC and DU this year!
