All Things Denver, XXVIII

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Matt Carle's goal makes the "Shift of the Game."

Shift of the game: Late in the first period, the Blackhawks thought they had an advantage when they got their top line out against Flyers' fourth line. But the trio of Ian Laperriere, Blair Betts and Darroll Powe kept Chicago pinned in its own zone. Laperriere started the sequence by blocking a shot in his own end and then laying a big hit to get the Hawks scrambling in their own end. Eventually, Jonathan Toews turned the puck over and it found its way to Chris Pronger at the point. His shot was blocked by defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, but Matt Carle intercepted the clearing pass and one-timed it home for a 2-0 lead. It was Carle’s first goal of the postseason.

As we were trying to close out the previous thread, Swami had the idea of listing our favorite DU hockey moments (seen in person). This started a stampede of about three of us who responded. Anyway, I forgot one (even though I have the finish on tape). It was North Dakota (why do these things always seem to involve them?) with the score tied very late in the 3rd. Tom Miller scored the GWG at 19:59, I say again 19:59, with assists going to Don Thiesson and George Morrison. THAT was a special moment that for sure makes my top ten list (if the Big Ten can do it, so can I).

How about an eyewitness to the 1969 Championship Game. Gerry Powers out dueling Ken Dryden has to be pretty special.
http://articles.chicagotribune.com/...89_1_ncaa-hockey-mile-high-city-denver-hockey

Yeah, great game. Second on my list behind the '68 title game when Powers shut out ND 4-0. I was there in the Broadmoor and remember SI called George Morrison "rubber man" (or something like that) for his work in front of Dryden, including putting one in his five hole. Ba-da-bing!

I've posted before about my little faux pas during the '69 semi final game between Tech (yes, they used to be very good) and Cornell. I'm wanting an all western final and I'm yelling some serious smack at Dryden, not realizing the guy standing next to me was his dad. He never said a word.

One of my favorite games has to be the Denver Cup final played at McNichols arena. CC was heavily favored and more than 18,000 people were in attendance. I was sitting with one of my all time best friends who went to CC. I was totally expecting to take a beating from him all evening. It wasn't the case. Lanksonnen had a huge game and DU won 3-2. Epic!!!

I'm sure I have messed up some of the details here, so you won't hurt my feelings if anyone out there wants to edit this post!

Denver Outlaws select Dillon Roy from DU in the sixth round of the MLL draft. You might hear more about Snider and Brown as DU lacrosse alums, but for my money, Roy is the best player, and likely most important player to ever come through DU. He was key in keeping the nucleus of the team together during the coaching change. Great to see a local kid reach the level he has.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I never posted my list of the best games I've seen in person because, well, it's embarrassing compared to the lists that you guys have. Best game I ever witnessed was us beating UND in the '04 regional.

One game I went to that hasn't been mentioned so far was down in the Springs (with nothing really on the line) but we came back from being down two goals with about 39 seconds left to tie the game. Seabrook got one of the goals and I think Dingle the other. Glad I didn't try to beat the traffic that night.

Funny, both games I listed were in the CSWA. Thank you CC :)

I was also there at CSWA that night, and as we were collecting our jackets and preparing to leave CSWA after the game, a rather rotund woman dressed in a CC jersey runs up to my wife and I (we were dressed in very understated Denver attire), got right in our faces, and began shrieking at the top of her lungs "Get out of my arena! Get out of my arena!". I began to laugh (the scene was horrifying enough that laughter seemed the only appropriate response) and that only seemed to enrage the CC woman even more. It was really charming....

Funny, I think there was also a game at Magness, maybe about 4-5 years ago, in which DU scored with about 1 second left to beat North Dakota. Hopefully someone will remember the details better than I do, but I think one of our defensemen took a shot from the point to ignite the red light. It was pretty cool.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I think one of the most interesting seasons DU ever played was in 1972/73. The roof in the old barn developed cracks after a major snowstorm in the fall of 1972 and the arena was unusable for the remainder of the season. It underwent repairs and it was during this renovation when the rainbow was painted in the arena. The arena re-opened for the 1973/74 season.

DU had 17 home games remaining on their schedule after playing their first 4 games at home and going 4-0-0 (sweeps against the Gophers and Notre Dame). The administration had to scramble to find open dates at the Denver Coliseum, Broadmoor in Colorado Springs and Cadet Ice Arena at the AFA. They were able to secure most of the dates at the Denver Coliseum but some games were played at the Broadmoor including a two-game set with Wisconsin in early January. They split with the Badgers in the Springs. DU won the WCHA with only playing 4 home games and then played 3 playoff games at the Denver Coliseum and one at the Cadet Ice Arena. They beat UMD 5-4 and 4-2 at the Coliseum and tied MTU at the AFA 3-3 and beat them at the Coliseum 4-0. They went to the national tourney and beat BC 10-4 in Boston and lost 4-2 to Wisconsin in the championship. They ended up with a 29-9-1 record and only played 4 home games.

Aaron Mackenzie. 2002 or 2003 I think.

I remember that. Think I only went to one game at the Coliseum, undoubtedly in a snowstorm, but I couldn't quite get the Rodeo atmosphere out of my head.

Holy smokes!! I didn't know we lost in a final game! That could have made it 8 national Championships!! First of all, who was on that team? And secondly how many other finals have we lost?

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

My favorite DU game that I attended was a couple of years ago down in the Springs. It was one of the games before which a bunch of us got together at Carraba's, so I imagine some of you remember it. I had lost my voice, and spent the whole game banging on that sheet metal wall at the back of the arena. In fact, the two games I went to at the CSWA both rank pretty high on my list.

DU also lost in the finals
1963 6-5 to UND in Chestnut Hill, MA
1964 6-3 to Michigan at DU

DU's participation in the 1973 NCAA tourney was later vacated by the NCAA Committee for Infractions.

DU appeared in the final game in 1958, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1968 and 1969 which is 7 out of 12 consecutive years winning it 5 times.
