All Things Denver, XXVIII

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

According to a thread over at Hockey's Future Ottawa's head scout interviewed Beau Bennett on June 1st.

Its possible that after just missing out on Bozak and liking what they got in Wiercioch, Bennett could land with the Senators on Draft day. Needless to say, Bennett going at #16 in the 1st round is the highest rumor we've heard so far.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Have you seen the special on HBO on the Broad Street Bullies?

Oh yeah. It was well done.

When you are a kid (as I was back then), you just got behind your team, and I really didn't see how much the rest of the country hated those Flyers until much later in life....

When does Ottawa pick in the second round?

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

More Matt Carle - Matt scored the winning goal against the Rangers to put the Flyers in the playoffs this year in the last game of the regular season.

Swami - I got to know Joe Watson and Don Saleski pretty well when they played for the Rockies. Joe was the captain and broke his leg playing for the Rockies. He had to retire. He had one of the loudest and deepest voices I ever heard (think of Foghorn Leghorn) and was a real leader. The "Big Bird" came over in a trade and was nearing the end of his career. Very tough guy on the ice but a really great person off the ice.

They don't have a 2nd Round pick. #16 in the 1st Round and #75 in the 3rd Round.

One thing that Ottawa may be thinking is, How to we land a potential Top 10 talent with the #16 pick? They could take a flyer on a Russian (very risky), pick a CHLer who was maybe injuried this year or reach for a rough diamond (Bennett).

A big selling point for Bennett is he is a much better player than Tyler Bozak was at the same age.

They could always trade for a 2nd round pick.

Or if they like Bennett and think he will still be around at pick #28 or #30 in the first round, they may trade down to get him, moving their #16 pick to a later-picking team in the first round and getting the late picking team to throw in a second or third round pick in return, or something like that....

If Ottawa likes Bennett, they're not going to risk waiting for the 2nd round. Maybe they could trade back a few picks in the 1st round and still get him.

Anyway its an interesting situation, based on the previously mentioned DU players.

Another interesting situation is will Brittain be drafted before Zucker? Seems like Brittain really helped himself at the Combine. Zucker maybe not so much. If Brittain goes as high as the mid-Third round be might sneak past Zucker. Similar to Wrenn sneaking by Shore last year.

I love all this talk about our recruits, but I'm a little confused about the hype on Bennett. Didn't we just read an article about how he would most likely struggle with the speed and toughness of the WCHA? Also, who is the more anticipated forward, Zucker or Bennett?

From what I hear, Bennett likely has far more raw footspeed and scoring talent, but Zucker is a more versatile player, in that he is better defensively and plays with a more physical edge as well as contributing offensively. Both are going to be impact players for DU, and will get a lot of ice time this year.

Don't worry about Bennett's speed or his shooting. He's a sniper. Supposedly he needs to work on his defensive play and like everyone else, bulk up at DU.

Zucker is a complete player and a very fast skater as well. He may very well turn out to be a Hobey Baker candidate by his Junior year.

Zucker's stats will probably mirror Kyle Ostrow and Bennett's stats will be like Ryan Dingle's.

Best case scenario, Zucker will become Dallas Guame and Bennett becomes Dwight Mathiason.

I love Whitehead through obviously clenched teeth: "I'm excited for him."

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Maine is going to be loaded this year including Hobey finalist Gustave Nyquist who had something like 62 points last year  (he is the front runner for the Hobey next year) They didn't lose too many studs and have an outstanding Freshman class coming in, tons of Swedes. The Black Bears have been down for a few years but they have been loading and reloading for this season, just like we were for last season. So losing Darling is a big blow to their expectations. We'll see, they might go out and find another Swede!

DG, I know you are very powerful, but I didn't know you were a sorcerer.
My powers are declining with age.

There is one NHL scout out there that thinks Bennett is a Top 10 (draft pick) talent/potential. Saw it mentioned about a month ago.

Hope #25 has a big game tonight.
