All Things Denver, XXVIII

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I'm thinking we can pull a North Dakota, playing our best at the end (for a change).

The schedule is really brutal up front - I'd be thrilled for DU to be .500 at Thanksgiving and make a late season run with the softer schedule on the backside. The downside of the backside is a lot of the games are on the road late, so the Pioneers will need to be a good road team and stay healthy to have a shot. Last year's team was much more banged up than we ever knew - nine players had postseason surgeries:eek:

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

So I'm trying to decide whether I'm going to the DU games in Anchorage this year. I didn't make it last year, but it's a pretty expensive trip. (It would probably be cheaper for you guys in Denver to get to Anchorage than for me.) The other side is that the only other game I might get to see is the Northern Michigan game on New Year's Eve. Stupid decisions.

At this point, I'd say that there are currently two coaches in the league that can pull off that sort of second half surge, and Denver employs one of them. The first ten games will definitely have a lot to say about your team.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Justin Jones will be wearing #25 for the Pios this season. He is now listed on the roster on the DU website.

Interesting that the FSN-RM TV schedule hasn't been announced yet. The schedule on the DU website only shows four live video games on Pioneer Vision so far, the 2 exhibitions at home in early October and the 2 road games at UND in late October.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

In 2005, DU started four Freshmen in the NC game against UND (Mannino, Stastny, Dingle & Thomas). DU could start four Freshmen most nights this season if they wanted to (Brittain, Zucker, Bennett & Makowski).

I'm very confident DU can finish in the top two in the WCHA this season.

Forwards
K. Ostrow (Sr) - Martin (Sr) - Maiani (Sr)
Zucker (Fr) - D. Shore (So) - Bennett (Fr)
Jackson (rs-Jr) - N. Shore (Fr) - Knowlton (So)
S. Ostrow (So) - Olszewski (Fr) - Dewhurst (Jr)
Salazar (Jr) / Mermis (Fr) / Jones (Fr)

Defensemen
Donovan (So) - Lee (Jr)
Nutini (Sr) - Makowski (Fr)
Phillips (So) - Wrenn (So)
Ryder (rs-Jr) / Brehm (Sr) / Cook (Sr)

Goaltenders
Brittain (Fr) / Murray (So) / Rosenholtz (Sr)

MVP
Anthony Maiani

Freshman Of The Year
Sam Brittain

Most Improved Player
Paul Phillips

Defensive Player Of The Year
Matt Donovan

That 2005 team was the last time DU came into a season with unknown goaltending. While I agree with Swami that DU's defense is very solid, and the strength of the team, it remains to be seen whether it will be as good as the 2005 group of Laatsch, Skinner, Carle, et al. They were a very talented group of defensemen.

It sure as heck wouldn't hurt if Brittain turns out to play as well in goal as Mannino did in 2005. :)

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Today is 09/09/10.
There are 23 days until DU's next game.

Wearing #23 for DU is freshman forward Nick Shore.
Freshman forward Justin Jones will be wearing #25.

This is based upon the first exhibition game on October 2nd.

True.

Remember Mannino was a 21 year old freshman in 2005.

Brittain is 18 and Murray is 19 this year.

Riga wins--didn't see Trotter in OT but did in 3rd period.

That was a sensational last few minutes and OT. Terrific hockey. Cheerleaders, too....

I am heading to Riga in about 10 days and already have tickets for the Sept 21 Dinamo game. Prices are about the same as the Pios.

The schedule was announced on Sept. 10 last year, Sept. 16 in 2008 and Aug. 17 2007 so I'm guessing it will come out any day now.

Expect Friday night games at home to be televised until XMas and then both home games each weekend after that.

Wiercioch attending Ottawa Rookie camp pushing to get invited to training camp. Acquisition of Gonchar and Hill, #1 picks Karlsson and Cowen may put Patrick in the AHL.
He shoulda stayed at DU.:D

Patrick has $2.625 million reasons to have left DU :D ;)

BTW Acording to CapGeeks.com, Tyler Bozak's 2-year contract has the total potential to be $7.45 million with $5.7 million in performance bonuses. Not sure what bonuses he hit last year but he probably did fairly well.

I think PW will get a shot at making the big club at the main training camp, otherwise I doubt he would have signed. Good chance he'll play in the AHL, which is an upgrade vs college hockey.
