Report that Eric Rud got the job with the Green Bay Gamblers, so Steve Miller stays put for now.

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com...s-hire-St.-Cloud-State-assistant-Rud-as-coach

Either this was about the $$$ (not enough for Miller), or Miller may not be a really good candidate for a head coaching job at this point. Thoughts?

We'll likely never know - coaching hires are like any other job, where a lot of factors are likely at play in the final decision.

The upside is Steve Miller is a great recruiter and a serious part of DU resurgence. He is mature, accomplished, articulate, loyal and has a strong hockey mind. He is certainly overdue for a chance to be a head coach. He's only interviewed for a handful of positions over the years.

The downside is he's earning at the high end of NCAA assistant coaches, likely above $100k. There is also the fact that because he's been working for Gwoz for about 20 years, he may not have as much exposure to different other coaches. He also lacks a masters degree, which hurts his candidacy for NCAA head coaching positions. Or for whatever reason, perhaps he doesn't connect as well with those who are interviewing him.

Whatever it is, I hope that he gets his shot someday...

Luke Fulghum has been chosen as one of the Coventry Blaze's 2 reps on the All-Star team that will be playing the Boston Bruins on 10/2 in Belfast.

To me the timing of the interview didn't make sense.

He had just been promoted and more than likely given some sort of a raise. Not only that, but due to Title IX, DU most likely had to give the Women's Hoops Assistant a similar raise & title.

Additionally, I can't believe that the Green Bay gig was going to pay anywhere near the DU salary. And its rather dubious to think a head coaching gig in the USHL gives you a leg up in an NCAA coaching vacancy.

Factor in that on average only 1-3 NCAA head coaching opportunities open up each season. And perhaps maybe once every five years is there an opening at the Top Ten type program.

Miller's best and perhaps only shot at a "prime gig" is holding his ground at DU.

I'm guessing this was just a fishing expedition, but to what end-goal, I'm not sure.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

The last Green Bay coach just vaulted himself straight to the AHL as a head coach, so I do think head coaching experience, no matter where you get it, can be an important factor in getting a head job.

If I were Miller, I would, like Seth Appert did, use his DU status as a coach to get himself a free masters' degree, which seems to be a big prerequisite with a lot of schools for an NCAA Head Coach position. Some programs will overlook that for the right guy, but it seems to me that it's something that helps you advance into the right consideration sets.
