Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

In not so good news, Drew Shore now on the 3rd line for Team White, but he is playing with Saad and Palmieri.

DU's Team Blue contingent is unchanged.
Not necessarily bad news for Shore. His only hope of ever making the team was as a Third or Fourth line grinder. He is probably much better equipped to handle that role than 90% of the forwards trying out for the team (Bennett for example).

Zucker, Bennett and Drew Shore still have shots at making the team but I'd say the odds are probably 50-50 for each player. Most people think Zucker is a shoe-in but I'm not so sure. Very tough competition for spots on the team.

Drew Shore had an assist and a penalty. Nick Shore had 2 penalties. Zucker and Bennett not on the game recap.

Don't read a whole lot into the scrimmage performances. There is no such thing as a clean slate. At this level. the USA coaches know 75% of their roster already slotted on a depth chart coming in, slotting players into roles they want based on the system they are trying to install and the talent and experience pool available to play it. Another 20% of the roster is decided in the two evaluations camps where they can look at how players play, interact, lead and show character. The final 5% of the roster is decided over the regulation season, where a very hot-starting player might displace a camp selection, or perhaps injury or other factors make a camp selection less desirable.

Do you have any prognostications?
Zucker--yes(IMHO)
D. Shore and Bennett?
N. Shore??

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Zucker and Bennett on the 1st line for Team Blue. N.Shore on the 4th.
D. Shore not dressed.

Zucker is a likely lock, given his previous experience and his 2-way versatility, which coaches really love. He's a player whose desire makes him really special. He can hit, he can score and and he can pass, and he's got those gritty intangibles and proven leadership for Team USA at the World Junior Level. I'd say he's got an 80% chance to make it.

Bennett is probably a 60/40 pick. He's a good scorer, but probably does not have the defensive game to make him a lock. If they need snipers, Bennett will get picked, but if they have enough snipers or defensive players, I could see him getting left out as an 18 year old.

The Shore brothers are both mystery picks. Drew's play last year did not set the world on fire, and his lack of finishing is something he needs to correct. He's not just not an accurate shooter. They might take him for experience and his grinding. Haven't seen Nick play much, but there isn't a lot of buzz around him, either. I'll put Drew at 45% to make it, and Nick at 25%.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Drew only player not dressed, hopefully he is not injured.

According to the USA Hockey blog, he injured his shoulder and will miss the rest of the camp.
Hope this is not a long term injury.

Howdy Pioneer fans!

Wanted to let you know that my family and I are relocating to the Front Range in just a few short weeks. After settling in, I'd love to meet some of the posters on here and learn more about Magness, the gameday experience, attending Pioneers games, etc.!

Looking forward to cheering on the Pioneers and having a chance to watch more WCHA hockey.

Fortunately, I'll still be able to catch most of Miami's games via the internet machine.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions, welcomed!

I was out in Ohio a couple of weeks ago, and Andy mentioned you were moving out. I think you'll like it out here.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Zucker and Bennett both advanced to the USA Evaluation Camp games against Finland and Sweden. The Shore brothers, both Drew and Nick, did not advance and were released from the camp.

Certainly, Drew Shore getting injured at the camp made his release automatic - not sure if he would have been released based on his play or if he is still in the mix for possible selection.

At this point, it's pretty likely that Nick's World Junior chances this year are pretty much done, unless he somehow plays his way into the mix.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Zucker certainly hasn't done himself any favors with 0 points in three scrimmages. Playing USA White is probably more difficult than playing the Finns, Swedes & Russians.

Certainly playing against this level of competition is more difficult than facing most WCHA teams, but that being said, four DU players that are going to be heavily counted on this season only managed a goal and an assist in three games is not encouraging.

Shore's shoulder injury is a big concern.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Lets offer congrats to Zucker and Bennett!!

Hopefully Drew Shore will be healed and ready for the season.

If he plays well this season, Nick Shore will have another chance next year.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

FYI, just received an e-mail that noted that Dr. Art (Dean) Mason, former Dean of the Daniels Business School and ardent hockey supporter has passed away.

Memorial Announcement – Dean Mason
The Denver Hockey Alumni Association has learned of the passing of one of its most prominent supporters. According to sources at the Athletic Department, Dr. Arthur Mason passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 24, 2010 due to a heart condition. A private family funeral is planned. Information on contributions to the Dr. Art Mason Top Scholar Athlete Award, in lieu of flowers will be forthcoming.

Dr. Mason (known in hockey circles as Deano) had a long and illustrious career as the Dean of the Daniels Business School. He was a valuable resource as a counselor, mentor and friend to many of the hockey players in the 1960 and 1970’s. His contributions to the Denver Hockey program can be counted both on and off the ice. He established several scholarship funds for student athletes and was known to come out and skate with the hockey teams on his lunch hour several times a week. He could “thread a needle” with his passes from the corner. For decades Dean Mason and his wife Polly enjoyed going to Denver hockey games. They were popular members of the Gold Club and rarely did they ever miss a home game. Dean Mason will not soon be forgotten by those of us who knew him.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Optimism is wonderful, but I think serious DU fans need to be ready for a jolt of realism....

DU was a solid 15th ranked nationally with 3.24 goal per game offense last year with 132 goals. Take away Rakhshani (21), Colborne (21), Reuegsegger (16), Weircioch (6), and the other DU departing players (9), and that's 73 of DU's 132 goals, or about 55% of DU's goals that need to be replaced, just to get back to a 3.2 level offense. Figure Bennett and Zucker get 20 goals between them (optimistic), you still need about 40 new goals from the returning guys over and above what they scored last year just to keep pace. That would mean even if Anthony Maiani, Kyle Ostrow, Matt Donovan and Drew Shore all doubled their goal production this from last year, you'd still be probably behind the pace needed for a 3.2 GPG offense, assuming the other players scored as often as they did last year. A few 5 goal+ players may double their output next season, but the chances of 4-5 guys doing that are unlikely, especially with the tough schedule.

DU was a 3.3 GPG offense in 2009, and a 2.83 GPG offense in 2008. Just for comparisons, the 2005 NC team was a 4.07 offense and the 2004 title team was a 3.4 offense.

Given the missing big guns and the very tough schedule DU faces this year, I think 3.2 GPG offense is a longshot. I think they'll be about a 2.75 -3.0 offense, which means the goaltending and defense are going to have to be totally great to have a shot at any hardware.

I think a mid-pack WCHA finish is pretty likely, and if the defense and goaltending are excellent, the team could finish as high as third in the WCHA with an NCAA tourney shot. But more likely, this is going to be a white-knuckle season that will see the team scratching and clawing to make the NCAAs and keep home ice for the league playoffs, and if the goaltending isn't good, a fall into the lower half of the WCHA could easily happen.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

On paper, UND is argubly the best in the league for the upcoming season and the target should be on their back. After that its a crapshoot. DU could end up anywhere from 2nd to 5th in my mind. Although DU took a hit with players leaving early and graduation, Wisconsin was devastated in losing not only their best players but most of their coaching staff. Minnesota is already reeling from a sub-par year and they lost some underclassmen that no one thought would leave as well as losing a player that was going to be suspended who went to the WHL. I think it will all come down to the team that gels well and early as to who follows UND in the standings. CC, SCSU and UMD will be in the mix but are not great teams. The bottom of the league will have the usual suspects as well as the two newbies.
