Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Former DU target and Michigan State commit Austin Czarnik has verbally committed to Miami. He'll play in Green Bay this year, then come to campus fall of 2011.

Maybe...

Very nice recruit for Miami.

I'm not losing any sleep over losing undersized forwards like Czarnik (5'8) and Grimadi (5'6). These players are unbelievably talented, but DU needs to get bigger and stronger up front.

College hockey in the WCHA has evolved to the point that a majority of goals are scored on power plays and massive pile-ups/scrums in front of the net.

That is why its nice to get Dusty Jackson back this season. A nice big body with some skill who can bang bodies with the best of them.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Looks like the USA Evaluation roster is down to 16 forwards after the cuts. The US will go with 13 forwards and a player or two may be added in December.

Bennett & Zucker will have to survive about four or five cuts. A look at the lineup tomorrow night will probably give a strong indication of where the DU players stand.

Agreed. Miami's size over the past several seasons has been an asset except against super speedy teams such as BC. But, I'm concerned he might not be a good character guy, maybe he's just young. That said, getting a smaller, speed guy can only help a squad not known for their wheels.

And then that style of play loses to teams with small fast players in the frozen four....

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Today is 08/03/10.
There are 66 days until DU's next game.

This is based upon 8 October for the start of the regular season
60 days until the first exhibition.

You can't win the National Championship unless you make it to the Frozen Four in the first place. DU has not performed in the playoffs lately. That needs to change.

Team USA vs. Sweden today at 2 PM MT. Zucker & Bennett still with a shot of making the team.

Paired together on the 4th line today.

DU defector T.J. Fast traded to Florida Panthers.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but this is a classic example of a player who never should have left DU. He's now in his third minor league organization at age 22, and the NHL dream is fading... . He is now no further ahead in his hockey career as a result of the choices he made to leave DU early, and he doesn't have his degree, either (as far as I know).

The tale is similar for Ryan Dingle, who at least got some money when he jumped, unlike Fast, who jumped to the WHL for more PP time. But Dingle is still a marginal AHLer.

Keith Seabrook also jumped early to the WHL and was a solid AHLer last year in what would have been his senior year at DU. If he plays another year in the AHL this year, he's another guy who could have earned a degree and been in basically the same place hockey wise.

These are great cautionary tales...

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

US up 4-1 over Sweden after 1st, Bennett with 2 assists and Zucker with a goal. All 4 USA goals were scored in under 3 minutes.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Looking at the USA Jersey numbers. Does anyone else think that the Jersey numbers might represent their ranking on making the team.

Zucker #12
Bennett #23

#25, #26, #27,#28, #29 & goalie #31 did not dress for today's game.

Interesting. It might just be random though too.
Otherwise "first-year" WJC invite players like Clendening (4), Watson (6), Dumoulin (7) would be ranked ahead of players like Kreider (9), D'Amigo (11), Morin (20), etc...all players that have played in the tourney before and been invited to the camps. Not that those players couldn't be added to the team instead of the "vets", but who knows. :)
