Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Howdy Pioneer fans!

Wanted to let you know that my family and I are relocating to the Front Range in just a few short weeks. After settling in, I'd love to meet some of the posters on here and learn more about Magness, the gameday experience, attending Pioneers games, etc.!

Looking forward to cheering on the Pioneers and having a chance to watch more WCHA hockey.

Fortunately, I'll still be able to catch most of Miami's games via the internet machine.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions, welcomed!

Welcome to Colorado. There is always more room on the DU bandwagon.

The Magness Arena/DU campus is conveniently located near exit 205 of I-25, about 7 miles south of downtown Denver. Magness had a 215-foot tall gold plated bell tower, so you can't miss it! The best game day experience is to take RTD light rail to the University of Denver stop, right by the arena so you don't need to worry about driving, but if you do drive, make sure to park in the DU parking lots or garages so your car doesn't get ticketed on the street. Fees range from $5 - $12, depending on what lot you use. Some nearby DU bars include:

- The Pioneer (DU memorabilia, Mexican food) on Univ. blvd
- Jordan's (University and Evans) - Irish pub
- The Border (sticky undergraduate dive) - Univ Blvd/Asbury
- Stadium Inn (DU's stadium has been gone for 40 years, but dive bar lingers) - Evans Ave just off campus
- Spanky's Roadhouse (Evans Ave - accross from Spankys)
- Crimson and Gold (a new bar opening this fall at Univ and Asbury)
- Campus Lounge (about 1-2 miles from campus on University) - owned by DU All-American and NHLer Jim Wiste - a good hockey hangout popular with ex-Du players. Good food, too
-DU Grilling Society often does free grilled food near the arena on home Game Nights

Season tickets available here:
https://oss.ticketmaster.com/html/pack_planlist.htmI?DB_OEM_ID=18600&l=EN&team=denveru&selID=220

Single game tickets go on sale Sept. 4

Redhawk95: welcome to Denver, in advance! I think you'll like it. Maybe you can adopt DU as your second favorite team. We'll talk about that over a beer, so let us know when you arrive.

Welcome to Colorado!

I think you will feel right at home with hockey here in Colorado. There are good options in Denver (DU and of course the Avs). A short drive away are the Eagles (CHL team up north), and AFA and CC down south.

DU games are getting better every year (the days of the corporatish-Magness are disappearing). Be sure to say hello to Boone when you get the chance.

In addition to what was recommended before, there is Old Chicago's (with its famous World Beer Tour) on Colorado Blvd and of course the famous (or infamous) Bonnie Brae Tavern (but always busy, so get there early).

PM me if you are interested in DU tickets, wife and I can host another couple or if four are needed, we can help. Be sure to try to attend AFA, CC, and the pros if you have a chance.

Once you get settled, talk to your neighbors, find out what you want to do, and write a list and visit all those places within a year.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

You know this wouldn't be a bad conference.
Air Force
Colorado College
Denver
Minnesota
Nebraska-Omaha
North Dakota
St. Cloud
Wisconsin

Thats a great conference, but it would be politically impossible for the Gophers to dump most of the other Minnesota schools. Don't forget, it was Minnesota that brought UMD, SCSU, MSU & Bemidji into the league.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

I'd watch your back. The last time a redhawk was seen in the mile high city, dggoddard had him defeathered and turned into a caricature of Daniel Boone. :p

Yeah, well, Gwoz has done pretty well coming from SW Ohio. How tough can he be? :)

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Today is 07/28/10.
There are 72 days until DU's next game.

This is based upon 8 October for the start of the regular season
66 days until the first exhibition.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Team USA U20 camp begins July 30. Beau Bennett, The Shore Brothers and Jason Zucker are scheduled to attend.

Team USA has games scheduled for August 3, 4, 6, and 7. Mark your calendars.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

DU hoops needs to fill the barn on opening night against CSU.

Hopefully with DU fans....

One of the problems with playing much larger local schools like CU, CSU and Wyoming is that most of their alums live in Denver and make a true DU home court advantage tough.

That said, DU is a very good home team, and will be hard to beat. They work very hard and play an old-school, backdoor cut style right out of Hoosiers. They deserve a lot more fans than they get.

After two years of very young teams, DU is now a seasoned team of upperclassmen. The Pios only lost one player to graduation from last years'17-13 squad, and while he's an all-Conference player (Nate Rohnert), DU now has 3 starting seniors (Rob Lewis, Kyle Lewis and Andrew Hooper) as well as 7 juniors (including 6-9 Air Force Transfer Trevor Noonan) and some promising sophs like Chase Hallam. DU should be in the hunt for a Sun Belt crown and and a first-ever NCAA berth. This should be a 20+ win team with coach Joe Scott entering into season four.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

They only play 7 of 15 home games when students are on campus.

That will always be the case as long as DU uses a quarter system with student vacation from Thanksgiving till after the New Year.

The key is scheduling some non conference big draws before Thanksgiving and popping one or two more in once the students come back to campus in January,

DU's scheduling problem is that big time teams don't want to come to Denver and play an Princeton offense team at altitude on the road. Even if DU offered to pay big money, those schools just won't come to Magness.

So DU needs to go after NC teams who will play home and homes in the next year, and bottom-feeding patsies like Alcorn State to boost thier record...

Should be an interesting season next year for the hoopsters. They have a 15 game home winning streak going.

I wouldn't be surprised if this saves money so that don't have to install the basketball floor as often in Magness and the hockey team would practice in Joy Burns.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Connor James, who had 53 points in 55 games with Augsberger Panthers of the German Elite League (DEL) last sesaon is now on the roster of the DEG Metro Stars (Dusseldorf).

DEG was the team of Ryan Caldwell, who played last year for Metro Stars, but is not listed on the current roster, so he may be either moving to a new team or retiring.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Another story for you all to consider, confirm, or ignore:
In 1950 or 51, there was a fire in a dorm on campus. There was a lot of smoke and a drunk hockey player in the basement. A dorm daddy pulled or helped him to safety.
Anyone confirm or add details?

DU had dorms then?
