All Things Denver XXIX

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

There are a hundred reasons why they've been playing Murray and will continue to play Murray. He certainly did nothing wrong this weekend to warrant discontinuing the rotation.

Murray has 5 wins 2 losses on the season. Losses at CC on Friday & BC in Magness, both times DU played like crap.

I think the rotation is lowering the quality of Sam's play. It's hard to get into the flow playing 50% of the time. Sam was much better last night then Adam was Friday. From a numbers perspective it makes no sense. If the numbers were closer, I could see it. Like Fisher and Manno they were very close numbers wise. My nine year old who went to her second hockey game ever last night and was standing behind the net watching the half circle shooting drill brfore the game. Sam went first, Adam second--she watches the whole thing and says after Adam's turn "their gettting a lot more past this guy". Ii think he's playing Murrary because he's afraid he'll bolt from the program if he doesn't.

Murray bolting or not bolting wouldn't make a list of reasons why they're sticking with the rotation. Either you believe in goaltender rotations in college hockey or you don't. Clearly Gwozdecky believes in them, and obviously I do too.

The purpose of all this is to determine who is the best guy to start between the pipes in April.

Brittain might or might not start both games this weekend against Minnesota. But to say that Murray won't or shouldn't play again based on Friday night's performance or how he's played so far this season isn't going to cut it.

And if Brittain wants to win the full time starting job he needs to earn it on the ice and not give up goals on the first three shots of the game.

Jay Z tied with Jack Connolly of UMD for the WCHA points lead with 26. He still leads in the WCHA goal scoring race with 17, 2 more than Mike Connolly of UMD
.
Pretty amazing since MConn scored 5 on Saturday.

Some sad news on the alumni front; former DU d-man Ross "Roscoe" Woodley recently passed away from prostate cancer. He played for DU from 1969/70-1971/72 and was a captain in his senior season.

Didn't know Ross, but any time a former Pioneer captain leaves us, our star burns a little less bright. Hope the school will take a moment to remember him during the Tech Series.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

While I am thinking about it, I really liked using the media timeout for Jesse Martin's on-ice return. Pre -game is tough, because DU crowds tend to be late arriving, and between periods, everyone is going for food, drink and restrooms, and post game, people are leaving.

The media timeout gets 12,000 foused eyeballs on whomever you are honoring - highly effective, even if short.

NHL Draft: Do the names Scott Mayfield and Nick Shore ring a bell? #6 and #11 respectively
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/draft/2011-02-01-top-american-draft-prospects_N.htm

Keep in mind these are the rankings for American born players only and excludes Canadian and European born players. Mayfield in the latest ISS rankings is listed at #22 and Shore doesn't make the top 30. The NHL Central Scouting Midseason rankings have Mayfield at #15 for North American players and Shore at #38. Mayfield is likely a late 1st round pick and Shore is probably a mid to late 2nd round or early 3rd round pick. A strong finish by Nick to the DU season could boost his stock as he was injured for a lot of the first half.

With BC's and Northeastern's wins in the first round of the Beanpot last night, DU is now tied for 5th with UND in the PWR. DU is aslo ranked #4 this week in both the USCHO and USA Today media polls.

This is probably a good thing for us as maybe they'll stick around a little longer. Any news on the 3rd Shore, (Quinton?)
