Re: All Things Denver XXIX

The UAA fans didn't post on Saturday night. They hung out on the UAA Live Blog and made a bunch of classless statements about our players, our coaches and other things.

The UAA fan base has gone off the deep end.

Ha, ha. I think they've BEEN off the deep end for quite some time now. That chick crying about Wiercioch faking a knee injury took the cake. Even without that, the perpetual whining about the refs screwing them is so funny and odd to hear from a cellar-dweller of a program. It's truly amazing how the refs have conspired to make them so awful year after year! They're probably just upset that DU has won like 90% of their games against UAA, and embarassed them with goals like Bennett's and Zucker's on Saturday night. (The refs must have set some screens for DU on those goals.)

On an unrelated note, here's a great article from Kisla on a program that does NOT spend much time in the cellar. I think it was mentioned below, but I thought it worthy of a link:

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

UAA's fans can be whiny, certainly. Ours can be arrogant. We all have our faults.

Bottom line - DU got the results they wanted last weekend, but UAA outplayed the Pioneers for large chunks of the weekend, and DU won largely because UAA struggled to finish their opportunities. The Pios will need to be better than that if they want to win in the NCAAs.

Pios need to use this offtime to rededicate themselves to better coverages, gap control and reviving the power play, which is still way below where it should be.

On the plus side, DU has developed three lines who can score, and with more balance then last year's 2 scoring lines. The Pio defense can be really good when it wants to be, and I think you'll see some improvement here down the stretch. Goaltending was also very good last weekend - only 1 softie.

There is something about this team that makes you think there could be a long post-season run.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Right now Jay Z has a 3 point lead (24 points) for the WCHA scoring title over UND's Matt Frattin and UMD's Jack Connolly (21 points each). Drew Shore and Anthony Maiani are tied for 4th with 3 other players with 19 points. Jay Z leads all WCHA goal scorers with 17 goals, 4 more than Matt Frattin. He is on pace for 27 to 28 goals in league play and probably close to 37 to 40 points.

DU's offense is leading the league averaging 3.5 goals per game and is tied for 3rd in defense at 2.5 goals per game. The offensive stats are primarily due to its 5 on 5 play as the power play is an anemic 16.18% and 8th in the league. Imagine if this team had a top notch power play it would probably be averaging over 4 goals a game.

Zucker's numbers are VERY impressive.

Those were some amazing goals on Saturday night. Ostrow's goal reminded me of Antti Laaksonen, and the way he used to drive around d-men with his speed. Beau's goal was sweet--he's showing the kind of progress that we all hoped to see a little earlier from our other recent 1st rounder. Beau is starting to do some special things out there with his passing and scoring. Zucker's goal---wow. That was just amazing. Speaking of confidence...that kid has an abundance of it. His interview with Alanna (?) from Fox Sports after the game was funny, too.

The DU hockey team wasn't the only ones firing on all cylinders this weekend.

Nice job by the DU fans on the scoring thread on Friday night. Old Pio was a force and CO14ers brought his A game.

Praise from the god of all DU hockey is appreciated. You'll notice one of those trolls referenced players "deliberately putting themselves in danger" or something similarly stupid. I'm wondering if he still justifies rape because "she was asking for it, dressed like that." I guess Jesse Martin was asking for it, too,. I think he's just trolling, I can't believe anyone actually thinks that way. After last year I was determined to stay out of it this year. But their posters are so relentlessly paranoid (the one dude laid it all out, the WCHA is against them). I was tempted to post that allowing them into the WCHA was as big a mistake as not allowing UNO in, but I held off.

DG's right, their posters are classless for the most part. But they're a good match for how their team performs, wouldn't you say? I didn't miss 'em Saturday night and hope they'll continue to "punish" us in the future by doing their cold weather group JO's somewhere else.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

While DU enjoys a bye week this week, a very interesting series will be taking place 60 miles to the south in Tiger Land. The Fighting Sioux will be bringing their traveling show to the Springs for a 2-game series. Being DU's two biggets rivals, it is hard to root for either of them to win a game. Depending on the outcome of the series, UND could stay 1 point behind DU to being 3 points ahead. UND will have 8 games to go after the CC series and DU will have 10 games to go with 2 games in hand. CC is 11 points behind DU right now and a sweep will only get them a tie with Wisconcin who is ahead of them in the standings by 4 points. Wisconsin plays MTU this weekend, so the chances of CC gaining any ground on Wisconsin are fairly slim.

What did he say to Alanna?

Zucker said something about how he had never tried that move before, and some other humble hockey colloquialisms. Alanna jokingly called him out, to the effect of "yeah, right, like you've never tried that move before!"

About the best we can hope for is a tiggie-susie split or 2 ties

A minimum of once a weekend that kid produces an "Oh sh*t, did you see that?" moment. But he's also tough. He's been whacked around pretty hard all year and has shaken it off. That puck he took to the back of the knee on Saturday hurt me, but he got ice, or heat or a boiler make or something and came back and scored an eye popping goal. Tough kid. And he's gonna need it down the stretch as that bullseye on his sweater will get bigger and bigger.

Rock activated off of the Islanders' injured reserve list today and sent back to Bridgeport.

Checked Islanders/Bridgeport earlier today and found nothing. Thanks for the info. Thinking optimistically--Maybe he'll get to play in the AHL All Star Game and get called up again soon.

Been wondering--Does he get paid at NHL salary level for the games on injured reserve?

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

He got paid his NHL salary up until today. Okposo returned to the line-up right after Rock got hurt. No spot for him on Isles right now on top 3 lines.
