All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

You'll have to help me out with this, but most of those guys listed were fantastic college players. In other words, guys who could be getting major PP minutes at DU.
Some I don't really remember seeing, but certainly the players on the list who we saw around the WCHA were considered top 2 or 3 defensemen on their teams at the time. And of the 15 or so on the list probably at least half of them saw no more than a handful of NHL games last year.

I say we send Fredo fishing, so he can show us his surefire technique for catching the big ones. "Hail Mary, full of grace. . .BLAM!" I said fishing not fisting. Good riddance. Learn the lesson. Fix the problem (if there is one). The Denver Pioneers do not succeed or fail because of one selfish kid.

Old Pio Annecdote Alert: Years ago in the old 6 team league, with Boston generally in last place, optimistic Bruins fans were saying: "Just wait 'till Bobby Orr comes up." At the time, Bobby was 14!

That is the last time DU played Cornell. All time record between DU and Cornell is 4-4-0. The biggest game was the 1969 NCAA title bout in Colorado Springs against Cornell in which DU beat Ken Dryden 4-3.

And George Morrison put the GWG in his 5-hole!

70 goals in just two seasons (only 62 games played). Two time WCHA scoring champ. First Pioneer to leave early for the pros. Jimbo said he was our best-ever left wing. I agree.

Jacky Parker suspended Priviterra for an additional game for the penalties he took against DU Saturday. Do you think the word "stupid" might have come up in that conversation.

I'd say "stupid" for openers.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Per Gwoz from Chambers - Jarrod Mermis on a leave of absence, Gwoz expects him back. Jussi in goal tomorrow and may play Saturday. Still no game notes posted by DU.

Well, I guess that means Jussi's no longer "probably" the leading contender to start tomorrow.

And the term "leave of absence" is interesting in Jarrod's case. Not an injury. Not a suspension. Is it related to his brother? And wasn't his non-playing status described earlier as a suspension? Curiouser and curiouser.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Game Notes finally posted for this weekend's series with Cornell. Per Chambers in today's Denver Post
Sophomore Juho Olkinuora will start in goal for the Pioneers, who have only 11 forwards available. Freshman Garrett Allen (finger) and junior Jarrod Mermis (leave of absence) are unavailable.

Just noticed the "Hits/Blocks" item in Game Notes.
Guess who is En Fuego in the Hits Category----Zac "Viva" Larraza with 68!

I suspect there's a lot more going on here than any of us can guess. Who knows what's happening in the mind of a kid who sees his life long dream slipping away?

I do agree with many others on this board that bolting mid season shows a definite lack of character. If you make an agreement & everything doesn't work out the way you want it to, do you just give up & move on? I'm certain the Pioneers were expecting more from him too but I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't get booted from the roster for not performing to expectations.

It costs a lot of money to send two kids to college. Even if one of the students is on a full ride.

Lots of questions. Very little information.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Here is tonight's line-up

Forwards
Loney-N.Shore-Knowlton
Larraza-Ostrow-Doremus
Jacobson-Q. Shore-Tabrum
Levin-Arnold

Defense
Phillips-Mayfield
Zajac-Makowski
LaLeggia-Didier

Goal
Olkinoura (Starter)
Brittain
Murray

Interesting D pairings. Phillips and Mayfield are primarily defensive d-men with Mayfield being a little more offensive oriented. Zajac and Makowski are 2 offensive minded d-men. LaLeggia and Didier sport DU's best offensive d-man paired with their best defensive d-man.

DU with a big 5-1 win over Cornell tonight.

DU up to #10 in PWR with UAA and Wisconsin still playing in Alaska.

Mayfield got a game misconduct not a DQ so he will play tomorrow.

Unusual for DU this year but all 5 goals were scored by forwards tonight. The D did chip in with 5 assists

Qualifies for the dumb *** award for the evening. Up 5-1 with five seconds left and he goes off on the guy's head? I know some of the WWF and tractor pull types out there, saw it as the high point of the game.

Good win. Solid effort. PP looked good. Glad to see George fell on his head on the way in from the bench and has decided to play the red hot Finn again tomorrow! Might be the first time in history he's answered a direct question from Rycroft on the air.

Great to see Q get the first star. The first goal was a sweet shot and the second was classic blue collar. Someone needs to train his older bro to take a shot instead of panning the entire building for a possible open man when he has a wide open net!

Listen. Don't knock tractor pulls. That annual Ivy League matchup between Cornell and Harvard is a b*tch. :D

Re Mayfield: We should be grateful for small favors.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

57 Update. Tiger "goaltending" gives up 8 tonight in Omaha. Now 8-11-2 and have the highest GA in the WCHA--at 79. The curse/drought is moving towards the half century mark. Will Owens be there when that banner is raised?
