Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

While I feel for the programs under the ax, hopefully some of the nonsense about hockey going away in Alaska will start to die down. From what I know, at least at UAF hockey was never seriously considered for cuts. It's too important to the campus identity and part of our history...we've had a hockey team since about the 1930's.

Well, that is good to hear. And, it doesn't mean down the road that the Ski Programs cannot come back to campus. Hopefully sooner than later.

The waiver requests are posted online. They are for a five year period, so theoretically they could be added back in after the waiver period ends.

I guess our boys haven’t been playing as hard as they could or looked as good as they have to me.
The two USCHO writers pick LSSU to sweep [5-2, 4-1] and [7-4, 5-2]. Stay out of the box boys and get'r done.

Go Nooks!

I am loving the lack of respect from any media outside of Alaska.

I am loving the lack of respect from any media outside of Alaska.

The media are going on the last shiny thing that they saw. I'm guessing that few WCHA media outside of Shane Frederick saw the Nanooks' series with Mankato, and I don't think that even Freddy saw the Saturday game. The folks that cover for USCHO are typically league member beat writers without the up-to-15 hours of their week to spend watching all of the league contests — you go on what you hear from coaches and other media members. It's a pretty thankless job (I know, I did it in the days when you didn't have video streaming).

I give you a puncher's chance for sure. In all, no matter how many runs I do, UAA gets four, five, or six points about 30% of the time and splits around 35% of the time — which is to say that you really only have about a 1-in-3 chance of being truly disappointed this weekend.

I don't believe anyone in this thread is ever sad when UAA goes away disappointed! Just saying.

Oh man, I typed UAA when I meant UAF. I'll be on my couch crying later when SCSU shellacks UAH.

Nooks up 2-0 on LSSU after one. Pace looks pretty good 5x5, but we've taken 3 penalties. Let's go boys, stay out of the box and keep your feet moving. Frye went down with an injury in the first, hope he's back in the second.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

LSSU is up 3-2 after two. Nooks take two quick penalties, resulting in a 5x3 and give up two quick goals. Their third goal was on a give away and not a great effort by Jenks. The boys quit moving their feet that period. Need to regroup and stay out of the box.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

LSSU wins 3-2. Wasted opportunity by the Nooks. We are a faster and better skating club. Undisciplined penalties cost the Nooks the game. Took twelve. Get'm tomorrow boys.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

I agree along with some questionable calls deep into the 3rd period. This "new" reffing style has to go.

Hallmark of a young team. High highs and low lows.

What's encouraging to me is some of the freshmen (and sophomores, notably Staley and Frye) are stepping up out of the gate.

Had the pleasure of working next to Bruce Cech last night. I have always enjoyed listening to him when the Lakers go to Fairbanks. Even better guy in person.

Basara with the OT winner! Big win, especially to get all three points tonight. Should be in 6th in the WCHA regardless of other outcomes tonight.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Nanooks win!! Great goaltending tonight from Jenks, we needed it. I can't wait to see what this team can do when we decide to stop showcasing our penalty kill and get consistent goalie play. The power play offense has been good so far this year, but it doesn't help to give up shorthanded goals almost as often as we score on the PP. Looking forward to a full Carlson Center for hometown heroes weekend this next week. Let's keep it rolling and take down the league leading beavers. GO NANOOKS!!
