Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

After 10 games the Nooks sit at 3-6-1 and 11 points. They are in eight place ahead of NMU and UAA. They are one point behind LSSU and two points behind both FSU and UHA. For a team with 20 underclassmen and 12 freshmen, we haven’t played badly. But that lack of experience and untimely mistakes have cost us at times. Of our first 10 games, 6 have been against our tougher conference teams (MSU, BSU, MTU). Against LSSU and UAH we took 8 out of 12 points on the road. Even with our record I’m not that unhappy or disappointed with our play.

We have had two stinker games were we gave up 7 goals (MSU) and 6 goals (BSU), but have stayed close in our other losses. Too many penalties and giving up pp goals was a major part of our stinker games. Doesn’t get easier this coming weekend as we are on the road at MSU.

We still have four games against BGSU, but then the rest of the season is against the “rank-and-file” conference teams: UAAx4, FSUx2, UAHx2, NMUx2, LSSUx2. Our underclassmen are the majority of our team, and hopefully their growth along with a not-as-tough second half schedule will help us move up in the standings. Of course, every "rank-and-file" team is saying the same thing about playing us.

Go Nooks!

Just curious - if the branding strategy is "Alaska", why did the PA announcer keep prompting people to chant "U-A-F" at every drop of the puck?

Some UAA fans have been asking this same question for a few years now. HA!

Another tough loss...4-3 almost ten minutes into third period...two goals 31 seconds apart...another one...7-3 final..
Freshman score the three goals...two power play scores.....No one said it would be easy....Go Nooks!!!

Never thought I'd say this about a 7-3 loss but I liked the moxie we showed last night. The guys hung tough until giving up the two back to back in the 3rd.

Won't be surprised with a Jones sighting in net tonight.

What a game. 3 points would have been better than 2, but a nice gut check for our guys tonight.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

There hasn't been too much excitement at home this year, but on the road is a different story. Thank you Davis Jones for helping us get the two points tonight. Let's keep it rolled and get the sweep next week!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Bowling Green rolls into town this weekend. Great opportunity for the Nanooks to turn around both their lousy Friday record and lousy home records. The Carlson Center has been dead dating back to last season and a lot of that, I think, stems from not being able to win consistently at home. In addition, these guys have yet to win a Friday game this season.

Bowling Green is somewhat like us in that they've played better on the road. Look to special teams as a key to both games...the Nanooks have been statistically better than the Falcons this season both on the power play as well as the penalty kill.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Good game! Ugly ending. The Nanooks moved the puck well and played much better defense. Hopefully Frye can get back out there tomorrow, Along with Morley and Woods who did not play tonight. This Saturday is the last home game for 7 weeks, a bigger crowd and a Nanook sweep would be a wonderful early Christmas present.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Solid game for the Nooks Friday Night as they beat BGSU 3-2. It was a game of contrasting styles as BGSU was bigger and stronger on the puck, but the Nooks were the quicker team and quicker to the puck. The game started out with BGSU maintaining puck possession in their offensive zone and it seemed like it may be a tough night. But after the first five minutes, the Nooks started using their speed to their advantage and controlled play most of the game. The Nook’s third goal was just reward after the Nooks skated circles around the Falcons for about 90 seconds before scoring on a wrap around. My first impression is that the last play of the game was a cheap shot and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a one game suspension. But I haven’t seen the replay.

A few shots from tonight:

The Falcons began the game with a physical presence...

But the Nooks took the early 1-0 lead when Basara's shot was tiped and bounced over Nells glove...

After that it seemed the Nooks really were able to keep the pressure on BGSU...

The Nooks spent more time in the dirty areas tonight than I have seen all year...

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

If you are a Nook fan and have WCHA TV (on demand), you'll want to watch the Nooks third goal against BGSU Friday night. The Nooks kept the puck in the BG zone for a minute and a half before Colton Leiter scores on a wrap around attempt. The Nooks enter the zone at the 10:20 mark of the second. Looks like a pp but it's 5x5.

The Falcons are a frustrated team right now. The Nooks need to keep their composure, stay out of the box, battle in the dirty areas, and use their speed like Friday night. It would be nice to send the Falcons home even more frustrated.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

A few thoughts after the first half...

1. Home record has got to improve. 3-9 at home just doesn't cut it. Especially when the WCHA standings between 4 and 8 are so tight, those home games have to be won. And it's an issue that goes back a couple of seasons now.

2. This freshman class, if they stay together, has the potential to be pretty darn good in a couple years.

3. We have to figure out goaltending. I can't figure out if it's the Jenksones combo or the defense breaking down, but Jenks' GAAis last in the WCHA statistically among guys who have played at least 33% of the minutes. Jenks was solid last year, so I'm inclined to think it's defense.

4. Looking at the major statistical categories, you would think we would be dead last or close to it in the WCHA. We are 8th in goals for, 10th in goals against, 2nd in penalty minutes, and 7th in penalty kill. The lone bright spot has been the power play running at a respectable 17.6%, good for 4th in the conference.

5. Which leads me to my final point, this team is grittier than they might get credit for. They've taken their lumps (e.g. Giving up an astounding 21 goals over 4 games to Mankato), but they usually get up off the mat. Where it gets interesting is the entirety of our second half WCHA schedule, with one exception (playing at Bowling Green) is against the bottom tier of the WCHA. Due to pure circumstance our WCHA schedule was heavily frontloaded with the top teams in the league...we are done against Bemidji, Tech, and Mankato and have already played Bowling Green and Huntsville once with decent results. Despite everything, these guys have a good opportunity to actually jump up in the standings.

Here's the TL;DR version: So you're telling me there's a chance...

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Agree pretty much with Squarebanks. Here is my take on the second half.

We are more than halfway through with our WCHA schedule with a record of 5-9-2, and sit in 7th place with 19 points (includes 2 shootout bonus pts). With 12 freshmen, 20 underclassmen, and only average goaltending, I’m not surprised at our record so far. Actually, we haven’t been that bad, just not very consistent.

We have played 10 of our 16 games against the top four teams in the conference, going 2-7-1 and getting only 8 out of a possible 30 points. We went 3-2-1 on the road in the other six games, taking 11 out of 18 points. Our second half schedule is more favorable than the first half, but we still need to get it done on the ice.

Comparing schedules, I can see us (and LSSU) moving up one or two spots by season end, with UAH and FSU possibly dropping back one or two. LSSU also has a more favorable second half schedule. I think BSU, MTU, MSU, and BGSU will land somewhere in the top four spots, but here are what the remaining teams are facing (imho).

5th-UAH (23 pts): MSU(2), LSSU(2), MTU(2), UAF(2), BSU(2), BGSU(2)
Of 12 games left, 8 of those against top 4 conf teams. Going to be tough to hold on to 5th or even 6th in conf.

6th-FSU (20 pts): UAA(4), UAF(2), BSU(2), BGSU(2), MTU(2), LSSU(2)
6 out 14 remaining games against top 3 conf teams. A fighting chance for 5th but probably need some points against top teams.

7th-UAF (19 pts): BGSU(2), FSU(2), UAH(2), NMU(2), LSSU(2), UAA(2).
Only 2 out of 12 games remaining against a top conf team. A fighting chance for 5th in conf. but can’t afford to get swept by anyone.

8th-LSSU (16 pts): NMU(4), UAH(2). MSU(2), UAA(2), UAF(2), FSU(2)
Only 2 games out of 14 remaining against a top four conf team. Solid chance for 5th in conf., but need points every weekend.

9th-UAA (9 pts): BSU(2), FSU(4), MTU(2), NMU(2), MSU(2), LSSU(2), UAF(2)
Games in hand on other teams, but 6 of 16 against top conf teams. Tough battle to finish higher than 9th. Probably need to sweep both NMU and UAF.

10th-NMU (7 pts): LSSU(4), UAA(2), BGSU(2), UAF(2), MSU(2), MTU(2)
14 games left but 6 are against top conf teams. Will struggle to get out of last place. Probably need to sweep both UAA and UAF at a minimum.

But it's all garbally-goop if you don't get it done on the ice...
Go Nooks!
