Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

The Nooks helped their playoff position last night with a 3-0 shutout of UAH. The Nooks were the better skating club last night and pretty much controlled play. Need to do it again tonight boys. Here are the three goals and a few other random shots.

Uhelski lost sight of the rebound and Mullally had an open net to put the Nooks up 1-0 in the first...

Mullally goal came at 4:31 in the first.

Chad Staley made a nice move to beat Uhelski and put the Nooks up 2-0 12:35 into the first.

Koberstein took a nice feed from Staley and buried his shot past Uhelski to put the Nooks up 3-0 just .29 seconds into the third.

I liked all of your pictures however thought the 3 goal scoring ones were outstanding as they really caught the "moment". They left no doubt how the goals were scored.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

We aim to please.

Side note, saw a bunch of the Mankato guys at Snow City yesterday.
The tomato soup there is excellent.
I talked with some of the Mavs pregame last night.
The usual, your first trip to Anchorage? yes, get to see any of the sights? just the hotel and rink.
We still need your help please. A second serving of bagels would do the trick.
And no tomato soup.

Below is a listing of the last few series. I added BGSU because they’re now in play after NMU’s sweep. The Nooks have a good shot at 5th or 6th, and an outside chance for home ice.

1. If everybody splits the remaining series then the Nooks would end up in 5th, just edging out LSSU and just missing out on home ice.
2. If everybody splits except those playing BSU or MTU, the Nooks would still end up in 5th, but #7- #10 placement would change.
3. If UAH can split with BGSU, and the Nooks can sweep just one of the three remaining series (NMU, LSSU, UAA), and not get swept by anyone, we have a good chance for home ice.
4. If the Nooks can sweep two of the last three series we have a really good shot at home ice.
5. It’s so tight that 3x3 or shootout bonus points down the stretch will make a difference.
6. The Nooks play LSSU in Fairbanks on Feb 17 th/18th. If either team can sweep they are in the catbird seat for 5th and maybe even home ice.

Go Nooks!

Home ice would be a nice win, considering every single "expert" left us for dead, with no expectation of making the playoffs, at the beginning of the season.

But, need to deal with that Nanook black hole called Marquette first.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Three series left and the boys need all the points they can get. We have not had much success at NMU over the years, so maybe the law of averages are on our side. We need at least a split to keep chances of home ice alive.

USCHO writers have picked us to get swept. But take that for what it is worth. One of the writers has picked us to get swept 10 out of his 12 weekly blog posts. Total loser…sad! :) Sweeping NMU in Marquette is not likely, but not impossible. This team, with 19 underclassmen (including 12 freshmen) has steadily improved, and goaltending has gotten more consistent. We are a decent road team and we have good team speed. We should match up pretty well with the Wildcats, so let’s just hope we limit unforced turnovers and unnecessary penalties. As usual the games will probably come down to special teams play.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing about the USCHO WCHA writers. One of them even said he hope NMU's goalie gets his fourth and fifth consecutive shutouts. Way to be impartial, guys. In addition, they've given us next to no press in their columns.

I miss the Paula Weston columns from CCHA days. Some had issues with her but you could always count on each team in the conference getting its time in the sun. For that matter, I miss a lot about the CCHA.

Why did you quit the CCHA? If you would have stayed you would be in first place.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

The WCHA TV feed from NMU is terrible so far.
Which may be a blessing in disguise. NMU up 2-0 early in the second.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

NMU still up 2-0 after two.
Nooks not looking very good so far. Not moving their feet.
When they get a good opportunity they're holding the puck too long and not getting the shot off.
Looking to score on the shot instead of working hard for scoring off the rebound.

Need to fire up boys and play with more intensity.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Nooks get shutout 3-0.
Very lackluster play for 50 minutes. Got outworked.
Need to turn it around tomorrow night.

Well that's four. Thanks for the help guys...

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Coach seemed satisfied with our play but I thought it looked like we weren’t skating very hard. Nobody was moving their feet. Regardless of SOGs last night, we didn’t compete. Got beat on almost every puck when it counted.

NMU wanted another shutout more than we wanted a win. Seems everybody wants to shoot for the corners for a nice looking goal, instead of just keeping it low and on net and working hard for a rebound. Lots of missed nets. Very little effort in the dirty areas last night until late in the third. I think we are a better skating club than NMU, but sometime we just don’t play very smart hockey. Our breakout execution is really bad. Not just against NMU, but against everybody.

It’s gut check time for the boys tonight. Other teams have gotten more points than expected from higher ranked teams, so if we lose tonight we are in danger of missing the playoffs instead of competing for 5th or 6th place.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Like I said on the UAA thread, Marquette is a black hole of horrors for Nanook hockey. Our all time record in their barn is abysmal.
And the black hole continues to suck.
I was hoping for at least some help from you guys this weekend.
Jeeez you guys are no help!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Bad loss last night but at least it wasn't for a lack of effort. Sometimes you just hit a hot goalie at the wrong time.

Beat LSSU...
