Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Nooks still up 1-0 after two, even tho they spent the second half of the second a man down. Back-to-back-to-back-to-back penalties. Therefore out-shot 14-5 in the second. We start the third on the PK. Lets go boys, settle down, kill this penalty, stay out of the box, and finish this one off.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Nooks lose 1-2 to BGSU in OT on a turnover. Good game by the boys. We have a bye next week.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

The Nooks are off next weekend. So our battle for a playoff spot down the stretch (last eight games) starts at home against UAH on Feb 3rd. We have a good shot at 5th or 6th. I would love to sneak into the 4th spot and host BGSU the first round, but that won’t happen. The next best scenario is to end up 5th and go to BGSU the first round. We have shown we and compete and win there.

I think the current top four teams will stay the top four, so the battle is between the rest of us. Everybody has 4 home/4 away (except NMU with a home/home with MTU). Some have a pretty tough road out based on the competition.
The top four have shown they are far from unbeatable, but not easy outs. Assuming that the rest of us spilt when we play against each other, and get swept when we play against one of the top four, here is what that would look like. This is not a prediction. Just what it looks like.

The Nooks need to at least split with everyone, and hopefully pull off a sweep or two if they want to grab the 5th spot. Some teams really need a couple of sweeps or solid points from conference leaders if they want to stake a claim for a playoff spot. UAF hosts LSSU at home on Feb 17/18 which could go a long way in determining the 5th place team.

Go Nooks!

February should be an exciting month of hockey. Any realistic shot at 4th went out the window after losing yesterday, but I'll take 8 out of 12 on a two week roadie anytime.

If we can maintain 5th or 6th, I like our chances at BG or Mankato. We've shown we can hang with and beat both of those teams, including in their barns. If we have to go to Tech or Bemidji then I would adjust my expectations.

Tip of the cap to Davis Jones. I don't know what changed, but the last two weeks tells me he is our guy the rest of the way.

Hey, UAA beat Tech in OT and took them to a shoot out the next night. And that was in Houghton. The Nanooks would be fine against Tech!

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

We blew them out two games (7-3, 7-2) in Houghton back in Feb 2014. Since then we have lost 10 straight games. Except for the 1-7 beat down we took in the first game of the 2015-16 playoffs, most have been pretty close. Seven decided by one or two goals. Maybe the law of averages would be with us.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

As far as I'm concerned the playoffs start Friday for the Nanooks. NMU and UAA have both been playing better, trail us by five points in the standings, and we play both of them this month (and both on the road).

As for Huntsville in town this weekend, we fared well against them on the road earlier this season but we've also been much better on the road. The goal for this team needs to be to maintain 5th or 6th place. Doable with our remaining schedule, and our chances of winning games in the playoffs are better against BG or Mankato.

Go 'Nooks. Hopefully fans remember that college hockey is still a thing after not seeing any home games in six weeks.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

I believe UAH has the five point gap over UAA and NMU. The Nooks have an eight point gap over said teams. But we still are in playoff mode. We took five of six points against UAH on the road, but both games were close and could have gone either way. We need better play and better goaltending then we did against them last time. Davis looked pretty good against BGSU, but that doesn’t mean he’ll get the nod this series.

I would like us to visit BGSU in the first round. MTU is the match up I wouldn’t want. But the top four can flip flop also, so we just need to get points to make sure we get in the playoffs. We can’t afford to be swept by anyone (nobody can), and need a sweep or two to take over 5th. The Chargers only have six games left and are fighting just to make the playoffs. They have BSU and BGSU up next so I’m sure they’re feeling desperate to get points from the Nooks. They will come out hard and we need to match their effort.

UAH is up 24-19 over both but UAA and NMU have two games in hand. UAH has the lowest maximum points possible.

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

These games should be close. But my worry is that UAH will compete with playoff intensity and the Nooks won’t. The Chargers are fighting for their playoff lives and the Nooks often lack intensity at home. Usually the home team comes out buzzing but don’t be surprised if the Nooks are the ones that need to weather the storm in the first ten minutes.

A Nook sweep this weekend would go a long way toward grabbing the 5th or 6th spot, probably helping us avoid BSU or MTU in the first round. Getting swept would change the whole last playoff spot picture.

Same, except swap teams. :p

Re: Alaska Nanooks: 2016-17 Season Thread

Basara not in the lineup this weekend against UAH due to a family emergency. He'll join the team at NMU next weekend.

BGSU lost earlier tonight, so there is still a slim chance for home ice. Wouldn't that pi_$$ off the number 5 seed. Home ice or not, we need as many points this weekend as possible to improve our lot in life. Go get'm boys.
