A New Coach for UMass...

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

Congrats to UMass.
Now, how do I view Dennehy? Someone has told me he is the highest paid coach in D1 hockey with an overall losing record (although I can't believe he makes more than Gendron)............

I believe Dennehy earns far more than Gendron. Gendron's salary is around $210K.

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

"He began his professional coaching career as director of hockey operations for the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League."

That's great! He'll feel right at home getting his azz kicked in the Tsongas Center next year.

Seriously though, looks a great hire.

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

All right! Fudgie the Whale, and Cookie Puss, and Cookie O'Puss, and Nutty the Chocolate Ghost.

Was Carvel on anyone's short list?

Mike McMahon of CHN had him as a possible candidate in his article over a week ago.

It was still a shock since he is a SLU alum but he has ties to Amherst with am MBA from UMass and his wife is from there.

Congratulations to Greg Carvel on his new assignment and to UMass for getting a talented, young coach.
This is an exciting day for UMass hockey and their fans!

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

Good (not great) hire by UMass. If he can get the program to the level where St. Lawrence is now, they will be building a statue of him outside Mullin in a decade. A .500 program there would be quite an accomplishment.

When you aint got nothin', you got nothing to lose

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

As is often the case, the head coach is important and his assistants are going to be equally important. Let's see how this coaching staff rounds out now.

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

From 2006-09 UMass was simply mediocre (1 season over .500) and they averaged at least 5,000 fans each season. To put that in context, three Hockey East teams this year averaged more than 5,000. This program is a sleeping giant and I think/hope Carvel will take us beyond anything Toot was able to do.

Re: A New Coach for UMass...

If UMass was a sleeping giant, they would have landed someone bigger than Greg Carvel. Still think it's a good hire, but UMass hockey is not a sleeping giant.

Wow, talk about cherry picking data... 2006 - 2009? That giant has been sleeping for a while.

From 2014 - 2016 UMass has averaged around 3100 fans per season. To put that in context they have ranked 9th, 10th, and 8th in league attendance in that time period.

Regardless, attendance is not really a good indicator of on ice success. Especially when half of the league can't even average over 5000 since they don't have arenas that seat that many...
