4 Zebras on the ice in the SUNYACS.....

Re: 4 Zebras on the ice in the SUNYACS.....

quick question though stupid. does this mean that SUNYAC opponents ie Elmira, Utica, Hobart, etc when they at play at a SUNY(that once a month utcia travels ;)) will they be playing in a 4 official setting or will it be strictly Intra-SUNY? thanks.

I was wondering the same thing and meant to pose this question.

Me, too. I guess I should start asking around...

My gut feeling, based on unique rules other conferences follow and not just in hockey (remember the six foul rule in the Big East?), is this is for conference play only.

I was thinking the same thing but the wording of the release ceratinly leaves it open to interpretation.

I got the official answer, and our gut feeling was wrong.

Every home game a SUNYAC team plays, no matter whom the opponent is, will use the four-man officiating system. (Of course, this won't be the case in the NCAA playoffs.)

So there will be four refs to miss the good game. :D

Re: 4 Zebras on the ice in the SUNYACS.....

One more ref on the ice is the worst. They get in the way even more, and amazingly they still miss the important calls.
I get to attend a fair number of Cornell home games, and the 4-person crew seems to work well there. It undoubtedly has much to do with the quality of the personnel, and perhaps the AH doesn't quite get the same level officials as the ECACHL. Although at times, the ice does get pretty crowded, especially on a small sheet like the Ritter.

The trailing referee certainly does cut down on the number of hacks and cheap shots behind the play that seem all too prevalent at the D3 level where linesmen or Assistant Referees seem reticent to call something non-egregious that the Ref(s) simply doesn't see.

Re: 4 Zebras on the ice in the SUNYACS.....

:mad:Thinking about the size of the ice surface at Plattsburgh, it seems that a fourth official will just be in the way. If I had a dime for every time an official got in the way of the puck during a game at the Stafford (for both Plattsburgh and their opponents)....now one more person to be a puck magnet with stripes? Ugh!

That's why I was semi-surprised that they didn't make the ice surface bigger in the "new Stafford," although I realize in retrospect there were building footprint issues.

Re: 4 Zebras on the ice in the SUNYACS.....

CCHA fans will be happy to throw Keith Sergott into the mix. Of course he was neither a quality linesman OR ref, so I'm not sure it's a good deal for the SUNYAC. So as an added bonus we'll have Duke Shegos make his triumphant return to the game and send him east as well.

Kelly Rutherford and Roger Graff both say hello. Don't get me started on CCHA referees, past or present.

It shouldn't be nearly as big of an issue now, but about 10-12 years ago the CCHA went to the 4 official system, while everyone else was still using 3. They made such a mess of it that they stopped it abruptly in middle of January or so.

As soon as I heard about the 4 officials, my thoughts went to the goal Middlebury scored against the Elmira women in Plattsburgh in January... I'm concerned that this may become a more frequent occurrence on an ice sheet the size of the Staff.

Re: 4 Zebras on the ice in the SUNYACS.....

I'm sure some Laker fans are thinking they need the extra ref to call more penalties on Ozz. :D

However, it's not an extra ref. It's an extra AR, so he gets to call more offsides, icings, and drop the puck half the time. Basically its a guy who job is to take up extra space, and allow the refs to watch for "ref things" like penalties - so the extra guy won't call more penalties, but he'll give the refs more time to find them.

Re: 4 Zebras on the ice in the SUNYACS.....

The USA v. Plattsburgh game Saturday night was the first of the year using the four officials set up. Interesting to note, and I don't know if all the games will follow the same, but none of the officiating crew had names on their uniforms. Instead they were all sporting numbers. This will certainly make it harder for us to address them by name when we want to show our appreciation for a job well done. ;)

Same thing - the "Staties" who work the campus center are all alums - at least the few that I know - and they were campus cops before moving up.....
