Interesting observation. Sat nite in oz we saw our first 4 man crew. What we saw was allmost comical. You would think 4 would get it right. In the 2nd period they we're confused. The communication between the 4 was not very good. What we observed was calling too many penalties on both teams.[Elmira] Hopefully they get better very soon.

Sounds like a nice addition to the staff and thanks for the correction. I had never personally been introduced to Duffy, but we had been in the same room together a couple of times and have seen plenty of pictures of him and they (Paul Duffy and Craig Dahl) certainly do look a ton alike! I sure hope they have each others phone number in case they ever need a doppelganger :D

Give them time to work it out. I think NCAA officials were there to see how it worked, therefore they were calling close.

I was there...while few penalties seemed suspect, plenty were good calls. I saw nearly every trip and hook that happened from the stands, they actually might have missed a few.

What was comical though to me was that it took more time with four refs to figure out the penalties from in front of the net in the first period then it seemed to have when it happened last year. Of course, the situation may have been different, I was not on the ice but just think with four they would see whats going on down there.

Having been an official in many sports, (baseball, softball, football, soccer, volleyball, basketball and Lacrosse) the problem in having more officials is mostly, not being used to the extra official system.

The difference of officiating a 3 man crew JV football game on thursday night and a 4 or 5 man crew on Friday night's Varsity football game has quite a difference as with Umpiring a Baseball game with 2 umps verses 3, 4 or 6 for playoffs is a big difference.

There is also a pecking system, but fans expect the youth football league official to call a game just like Ed Hochuli.

Can we with all honesty expect the officials at a D3 game to be pro quality?
Also many officials quit because they are tired of the grief, Heck I was called blind so many times I now park in handicapped parking.

In most cases the officiating matches the level of play and when we get an official that shows any skill, we lose them to a higher level of play.
It also depends on the availability and pool of officials. Most officials do this as a part-time job. We can't pay FULL time officials (Baseball pays umps full time and at the starting level it is peanuts).

But as fans (paying and non-paying) we still have the right to voice our opinion on the parentage, gender, intelligence and stature of an official no matter how good or bad the official is.
I know we would want every official to start off perfect and improve from there.

Still has to be better than it was years ago with only two!

You are spot on about StLouis. He is a disgrace. He, along with Dupree, who is another bird brain graced the house in OZ sat.
Four men, eight legs, eight arms, eight EYES and they still can't get it right

Just give 3000 fans the ref uniforms, no names, no numbers...lets see how well we would call the game (equally and fairly) or would there not be one single penalty called? :rolleyes:

Create a section called the "Jury Box". 12 luck fans get to sit there and when they think there is a penalty, they push a button, like they do in international boxing. 8 votes constitutes a penalty. If all 12 vote aye, its a major.

Just contact Fulton Officiating Services and ask for their list of Approved N.I.O.H.A. officials. Or visit Jeff Fulton at the Pro Shop in Webster, NY or the The Sports Centre at MCC (Rochester, NY).
