2nd Term Part XI; Year 8, Part 1... Electioneering and Lame Ducking

Re: 2nd Term Part XI; Year 8, Part 1... Electioneering and Lame Ducking

So I guess today's outrage-du-jour is Obama not attending Nancy Reagan's funeral, even though Presidents pretty much never attend a former First Lady's funeral, with it only happening one in the last five times.

And if he had attended it would have been selfishly to distract from the soberness of the event.

Hey now, that doesn't come until AFTER taking the selfie. ;)

Remember when our righty buddies all assured us that Obama would continue to sink until he wound up near Dubya's final 23% approval rating when he left office?

Yeah, about that.

I have problems with certain of his policies, but overall he has been amazingly successful. Given an opposition of whining saboteurs he's basically lugged the entire government on his back for 8 years with a little help from Handsome Joe, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid on alternate Thursdays. If nothing else dude has won 5 straight MVP awards and is coming up on 6 (not the first two years, which were wasted trying to reason with vipers).

Bill did more but also had a lot more help. Between them they have the two most successful presidencies since Ike, but I am not sure which will be considered the best by historians.

I think its lefties coming home. 47% of the population (the Mittens voters) are always going to oppose him. The other 5% or so were disappointed lefties who are now taking a step back and realizing all that he accomplished. Portends well for the general election.

Testable. I wish the polling that asked people whether they approved of Obama had broken it down to count those who thought he was too left vs too right.

But I have a feeling you are right. I mean I was pretty mad at Obama for reneging on his Afghanistan pledge, let alone his Gitmo pledge, and for his acceleration of MQ-9 Reaper wedding presents. But now that we're ramping up to fight the orcs the perspective does return that he's done great things while being dogged by jackals all the way.

I think it is a very positive sign for Hillary who is basically running as Obama term 3.

Same thing happened IIRC leading up to 2012. Obama was under water...under water...under water..pundits proclaiming his doom...then suddenly he went favorable. I wouldn't think knucks' suddenly found their love of the guy. It was more as you say of people maybe disappointed by some promises not kept, but then stepped back and considered both where we came from and who the opposition was and started telling pollsters they liked the guy.

Al-Gore ran as Clinton part 3 (but without the interns). I think the electorate gets tired of 3 or 4 terms, so if I was HRC, I'd want to come off as my own person with my own ideas and not hitching my reigns to the previous administration.

Actually he didn't and it hurt him. One of the many things I loathe about the Clintons is how spectacularly unhelpful they were for Gore, when Bill had amazing positives and could have not only helped his VP but also his party. But no, they had other priorities and they didn't see how that would immediately benefit them at that moment.

I agree that party fatigue is a real thing (something that is actually good since it prevents one party from dominating), but sometimes there are exceptions. The GOP was so monumentally tone deaf during the 30s and 40s that the Dems ran off 5 consecutive wins. The Dems were likewise incompetent in the 80s and allowed the Republicans a hat trick. The GOP is so bad right now -- likely the worst shape either major party has been in since the Dems in 68 -- that party fatigue may not be enough to close the gap.

Far be it from me to defend the Clintons, but he ran away faster than they moved away. He wanted to show he didnt have loose morals like Bill did and made sure he was seen as "Not Bill". Not to mention the fact that he stunk at public speaking (I get narcolepsy thinking about it) and lets be honest his track record on some things was spotty. It was his committee that held hearings about censor music in the 80's because his wife was on a crusade IIRC. Not exactly a liberal idea...

I agree. I'm remembering Gore NOT WANTING Clinton campaigning for him. He wanted nothing to do with him. They were afraid the Lewinsky thing would ruin his chances.

Yep and Dubya was running on the returning honor to the white house.

He's the "Tin Man" for a reason, and Tipper did him no favors.

How I remember it as well. Stupid to run away from a guy with a 70% approval rating, but that was the Gore campaign. Kep you might want to reassess a little on this point.

He's an ex president, not a necromancer.

Not bad. Not bad at all. :D ;) I think you missed your calling. Funnier than anything Dennis Miller has said in the last decade as a conservative comedian.

I recall at the time the blame being laid at the Clinton's cloven hooves, but given the response I may.
