2nd Term Part VII: You May Like Your Doctor But You Can't Keep Her

Problem is that CNN actually tried to do news. Sizzle sells. Sex sells. Anger sells. Fear sells. Anything where there's passion sells. But straight news doesn't sell. So now that CNN is dabbling in going tabloid...sticking your toe in that doesn't sell either.

CNN's problem is crappy reporting and brainless analysis. Their political team has to be the worst on television. Why they haven't put all of them out to pasture by now is beyond me.

If you want right wing coverage, watch Fox and left wing watch MSNBC. But for middle of the road journalism, with a hint of quality, either watch PBS or BBC America. CNN can't capture anybody because the quality of their product is in the toilet right now.

Don't know if I agree with all that. Again, its tough if you want to undertake the noble pursuit of straight news (not that they're perfect at it). They're the one's serving society broccoli...and nobody wants to eat broccoli.

Just don't watch MSNBC during the day. It starts off with a former GOP Congressman, then production values that rival most middle school A/V departments and goes through the Mrs. Greenspan hour. It is only shows liberal programming during primetime. (And no, that blowhard Chris Matthews doesn't count). So 20 hours of liberal shows every week. Also, on weekends it is unwatchable.

They aren't serving broccoli. They haven't been serving broccoli for several years. By now it's warmed over cream of broccoli soup that looks like Linda Blair puked it up.

Agreed. I would completely go along with Major's premise if we were talking 12 years ago, but they lost all credibility during the run-up to the Iraq war where they ditched getting to the truth and openly admitted trying to keep up with Fox (watch Bill Moyers devastating piece on this where the CNN Prez at the time cops to this without a hint of regret). Ever since then they've become the False Equivalency Network. They also turfed the one person (Soledad O'Brien) who wouldn't go along and kept people like Blitzer, King, Burnett...its a clown show plain and simple.

CNN's problem is crappy reporting and brainless analysis.

On the polar opposite, Sharyl Attkisson has left CBS.

What are the odds that she was pushed out due to her continued digging into Benghazi and F&F? From Dylan Byers at Politico:

Attkisson, who has been with CBS News for two decades, had grown frustrated with what she saw as the network's liberal bias, an outsized influence by the network's corporate partners and a lack of dedication to investigative reporting, several sources said. She increasingly felt like her work was no longer supported and that it was a struggle to get her reporting on air.

I wonder if she's gotten a call from Roger Ailes?

A bit of a stretch...but yeah, pretty much.

Re: 2nd Term Part VII: You May Like Your Doctor But You Can't Keep Her

South Carolina Republican Rep. Mark Sanford claimed in an interview that was posted on YouTube Sunday that the “government didn’t shut down” during the government shutdown.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/andrewkaczynski/republican-congressman-says-the-government-didnt-shut-down-d

“The government didn’t shut down,” Sanford said. “I mean everyone likes to describes it as such … the president in some cases shut down parts of government that were most visible to people. People were still getting their Social Security checks. They’re still enacting … enrolled in Medicare. I mean, I could go through a lot of different functions of government. You know, we had planes that were flying on a nightly basis … you know, using pieces of sort of our national infrastructure grid. So a lot of things were happening.”

An estimated 800,000 of the more than 2 million workers that are employed by the federal government were “nonessential” and furloughed when the shutdown began on Oct. 1, 2013. Some, such as civilian workers at the Department of Defense, returned to work as the shutdown dragged on.
“Congressman Sanford was referencing the fact that in this “shutdown” approximately 80% of federal employees kept working and only roughly 13% of federal spending was actually shut down. Given the scope of government services that continue without interruption during a lapse in appropriations, calling it a “government shutdown” is overblown.”

Re: 2nd Term Part VII: You May Like Your Doctor But You Can't Keep Her

What's your point? How is what he said wrong? More than 80% of the government kept on choogling, yet people wanted to call it a shutdown. Yet the government never completely shut its doors.
It's all spin.

Maybe the Republicans should actually cut the government that's in the 80%. So far the only cuts they want to make are to Medicare and Social Security. I have a hard time believing those two programs are what keep 80% of the government open during a shutdown.

What people say and what you hear, they're not one and the same, are they? When did he say anything about Meidcare or SS?

To that, those departments you mentioned did not completely close. The only thing I'm aware of in the Pay Me Now, Bi+ch department that did close is SSI for taking/processing new applications and handling followup reviews (this is Soc. Security's disability department).

You don't find it disingenuous that a party that helped pass all the bills that caused the deficit has no ideas for shrinking the government beyond slashing Medicare and Social Security? You don't find it disingenuous that a party shutdown the government over paying for bills that they helped pass?

They're a joke.

When they actually cut something (and I don't mean the growth, I mean actual REMOVAL of programs) get back to me.

Less of a joke than your favorite party and President, who are even more hypocritical in the spending/deficit control arena.
But, hey, I know they're largely off limits for criticism in your eyes.

I do think it's bad there there aren't real cuts to programs. Across the board, cut the government budgets from current levels. The reality of the situation, however, is that it'll never happen. There's nobody with the backbone. We've put so much money into Washington's hands that we'll never see any substantial cuts until we go Greece. There are too many people out there clamoring for cuts to programs, but scream bloody murder if it's their program that gets cut. With the Washington money, we've built up so many special interests, so many people rent seaking from the Feds, that it's just not realistic to expect true cuts to ever be made.

Just out of curiosity, how large do you think the deficit is this year, both in real dollars and % of GDP? No googling! How much do you think it is?

Except the average run of the mill Middle Class. Who has no lobby and no power. Case in point, Obamacare, and Payroll Taxes.

Why do you not want someone to research the values? What's the point in society having tools and then declaring them not to use? Einstein would laugh in your face at such an assertion.

I seem to remember that the defecit value is projected to be somewhere betwen $600 and $800 billion. These are still projected figures as we're not yet 50% through the year's fiscal budget. As a % of GDP, that's going to put the defecit betwen 3.8% and 5.1%, assuming we don't get a contraction in that time. And the % of GDP is irrelevant at this point as the overall debt is the real killer at this point.

There's a defecit explosion on the horizon again, though.
