2nd Term Part VII: You May Like Your Doctor But You Can't Keep Her

Re: 2nd Term Part VII: You May Like Your Doctor But You Can't Keep Her

But the objective fact remains that he did, and he's been given credit for helping create the internet by people that invented some of the technology for it.
He invented the internet in the same way that Dennis Hastert invented the Joint Strike Fighter. After all, Hastert was the Speaker when the Defense Authorization Bills were passed to fund the program - why shouldn't he get all the credit?

And in the same way that Sequoia Capital (and other venture capitalists) invented Google.

Thinking it's a good idea to direct funding to something is in no way the same as inventing or creating it. Saying so is purely over-exuberence on Gore's part - clearly not a deliberate attempt to lie, since the record speaks for itself. I think he just got caught up in the moment.

Re: 2nd Term Part VII: You May Like Your Doctor But You Can't Keep Her

Playing the victim so much is not becoming of you or of any of us, Bob. Vague references to "you" and "they" and rights that are infringed upon or marginalized without specifics will not cut it. Who exactly has infringed upon Bob Gray's right to speak or or assemble and by what act?
I never said it was done to me. Please read my posts with more attentiveness. My point is quite clear.

Fair enough. If your right to free speech has not been infringed, what person's has and by what act?

Re: 2nd Term Part VII: You May Like Your Doctor But You Can't Keep Her

The Duck Dynasty story was all over the news. Did Kluwe comment on that?

I don't follow Kluwe's every spoken or written word, so I have no idea. Based on what I have read of his, though, I wouldn't bet against him having commented on it at some point, somewhere.

Again, I said nobody's free speech right was directly infringed upon. It is indirect.

"Taking the initiative" must be a phrase above some people's grasp of English.

Sadly this bares repeating. This is not a claim to inventing anything. He's only saying he played a part in getting the ball rolling. Is this really cryptic or even worth additional scrutiny?

Sounds like he tried to make more of it than it was, something apparently unheard of in politics.

Re: 2nd Term Part VII: You May Like Your Doctor But You Can't Keep Her

Didn't say that he did. Marrying a 15 yo is illegal in most circumstances and unethical in few others that remain.

It wasn't just the comment about marrying a 15 year old, it was his innuendo in his statement. Or did his defenders not notice when he said "She'll pick your duck.". Wakka wakka! Sex jokes about 15 year old girls are a riot!

Or morally along the same lines as saying that one should consider some gun control legislation proposals.

Re: 2nd Term Part VII: You May Like Your Doctor But You Can't Keep Her

They just don't accept that anyone doesn't share their views, so they attack and stifle any speech that they don't approve of. Not a direct attack on free speech, but nevertheless a very dangerous indirect attack on free speech. They are saying you have free speech, but if you exercise it, we will hound you and intimidate you and marginalize you. Most of these folks wouldn't understand free speech if it landed on their head.

Seems to me that you are the one struggling with understanding it.

The duck dork can say whatever he wants including that a 15yo would make a fine wife. He won't be persecuted by the government for saying something like that or his take on homosexuality leading to bestiality.

Protection from the government is the only thing that's included in "freedom of speech."

Phil is not protected from me or anyone else pointing at him and laughing at his redneck backass hillbilly views.

Re: 2nd Term Part VII: You May Like Your Doctor But You Can't Keep Her

Invent, create, whatever. He did neither for the internet. I can't believe some people still believe this.

Who believes this? I don't even know anyone who believed it at the time.

Wasn't he immediately mocked for this and didn't he have to retract it?

Again, he never said he invented it. Is it honestly that hard to read his freaking quote? Did he over-state his role? Sure, he's a politician. His quote made it seem like he was the only one in government pushing for the legislation. But the undeniable fact (which people are denying) remains, he was one of the few people in congress that took the initiative to pass laws that helped create an environment/funding opportunities for the modern internet to take shape.

There's a simple question you need to ask yourself: If congress didn't pass some of the legislation that Gore and others at the time wrote/sponsored/argued for, would the internet have come about as fast and as robust as it did?

I don't think he was making a sex joke at all. I think the Philbilly was talking about training a girl/wife not to be so squeamish so that she'd actually pluck a duck he shot. Then again, I've only seen a couple/few episodes of the show, so perhaps just on reputation I've assigned the hick too much of a godly and naive persona. Perhaps he's actually a dirty old man.

For the most part true, even if you say it in an obnoxious way. But, you also miss my point. Again, I said that his freedom of speech wasn't directly violated. But, there are many ways to stifle speech without directly attacking freedom of speech. But, so few people really are willing to hear from and respect opposing viewpoints in this country anymore, that it's becoming routine to intimidate people into not speaking out. Over time as it worsens, it will have much the same effect as directly attacking freedom of speech. To think otherwise is to either be naive, or to not really value true full freedom of speech for others, especially those who have differing viewpoints.

No, it was all true. Again, "freedom of speech" only protects you from the government.

If you're going to say things that either go against facts or go against societal norms, you risk the consequences. If you're a business owner or a coach or any other public figure, you'd better think before you speak and you'd better consider your audience.

And Phil's takes go a little beyond "differing viewpoints."

People who say crazy *** stuff deserve to be shouted down. To stand silent is to promote and further the cause of ignorance.

As another poster said, it's amazing what the right will tolerate from one of their own.

Funny how liberals love diversity, except when it's different than them, speech being a good example.

Bottom line is you really don't value freedom of speech very much, except that which matches your beliefs and views.

Bob you're getting the martyr complex fired up again. Must get tiring having to keep dragging the cross around looking for someone to nail you up on it. :D

Duck Dork says something controversial, which he's within his Constitutional rights to do. People object, which is within their Constitutional rights. Duck Dork gets suspended by his employer, who are within their rights to do so. What's the problem? I'm not sure if you're still employed Bob, but if you went in front of a bunch of a firm's customers and starting ranting about controversial subjects, or did something lewd, you could very well be fired, and appealling on First Amendment grounds would not save your job.

Not one of your best windups.

Not a fan of Kluwe if you don't like martyr complexes, eh?
