2nd Term Part 5: Big Brotha

Cayuga County bleeds red.

The last time I checked upstate New York wasn't exactly a boomtown. More like a combo of rural and urban blight. If things are so Republican up there, what gives? I thought tax cuts for the rich cured all problems, from unemployment to cloudy weather?

When I was @ Clarkson, St. Lawrence County was Republican. Now it is pretty much Democrat. Back in the 70's there were manufacturing plants up in Massena (GM, Alcoa). Both are long gone and, IMO, St. Lawrence County, outside of the 4 colleges and the industries that cater to the colleges, is poverty row.

The last time I checked, Cayuga County was not in Upstate New York. More like Central NY.

CRIPES! Get with your geography!! Don't you know that anything North of Yonkers is considered "upstate"? :D

Anything North of Albany is "Unexplored"

Re: 2nd Term Part 5: Big Brotha

I always thought anything north of NYC was "Upstate". Similar to the Yoopers distinguishing themselves from "up north", which among the majority of Michiganders typically refers to the northern lower peninsula, it sounds like there is more distinction among the so-called Upstaters. ;)

I love it when you hear someone who apparently never got past the 8th grade talking about "Northern Michigan" and they mean Traverse City. :D
Buy that man a map! Or a compass.

I like the Cherry Festival. In Nebraska, anything west of Lincoln is called "outstate."

TC is still in the northern part of Michigan, even if it's not in the UP though.

If it's not NYC, it's either Upstate or the Hamptons...

So I had to go on google maps to make sure - if you include the UP as a part of Michigan (the logic of which is another issue), Traverse City is smack dab in the center of the state.

You call yourselves Yoopers and tried to break off in the 70s, I think that qualifies you guys as your own separate region, despite geographical and political technicalities. Besides, why the rush to identify yourselves with the Trolls you so despise? ;) :p

That wasn't me, my parents both grew up in Detroit. I was the one saying that Traverse City is in the center of Michigan.
Although I have seen those petitions from time to time promoting a "State of Superior" (economically based on lots of spruce trees, presumably?)

Was watching the UM/OSU rivalry special on HBO last night and it said that a fair amount of the emnity between the two states arose when Michigan became the automotive capital and money was pouring in, to the state and the university. Is that partly the source of any of the relationship between the lower and upper parts of Michigan...or is that something different? I also wonder how much the Michigan automobile economy impacts UM or is the school insulated from that due to its national base of students, funding, grants etc?

Re: 2nd Term Part 5: Big Brotha

C'mon man! Every president for years (Reagan??) has honored pro and NCAA Champions. This is a pass.

I still think that the White House should host a dinner for the AT&T pros and their significant others when the tour is in town.
Agreed. The picture inset looks pretty bad, though. Pres. Obama does not look thrilled to be there for the photo op with the ladies.
