Re: 2nd Term - Part 3 - Echo Chambers, Chorales, and Wingnuts, Oh My!

What would you like them to call it

Don't kid yourself. He would be criticized whatever he said. When he didn't call it terrorism at the first press conference he was out of touch, didn't get it and was sympathetic to terrorists. Now that he has called it terrorism he is looking to shred the Constitution and take away our <strike>jerbs</Strike> guns.

DEY TUK AR JERBS!!!! :p

Actually, if he didn't say it was a terrorist attack, it would have left it open as a domestic incident. Granted, we're throwing the word around so much and it has become so taboo that it's almost time to start calling it "the t-word". One important fundamental to understand about freedom is that this sort of stuff can happen. The funny thing is, it could also happen with a not-so-benevolent dictator in charge, especially given how the thing was constructed: pressure cooker and marbles.

So you only associate terrorism with external threats? There is no domestic terrorism? What Tim McVeigh, Eric Rudolph and Ted Kaczynski and others have done isn't terrorism? What is it?

Re: 2nd Term - Part 3 - Echo Chambers, Chorales, and Wingnuts, Oh My!

I don't understand the debate at all. The investigation doesn't change whether you call it by the thing it is; terrorism. And there's absolutely no doubt that's what it is. Terrorism doesn't get any more terrorist than this bombing. In the future, you can put a pic of the Boston Marathon '13 under the word "terrorism." It should be THE event by which we can judge whether other things are or are not terrorism. What else could you possibly call something like this, no matter who did it? And why is it offensive to call it what it is? The name doesn't change the actuality of it.

So, there's no such thing as domestic terrorism?

What planet are you living on?

It does, however, show the fallacy behind declaring war on an ideology. It's just the McCarthy witch hunt of the 50's, or any other witch hunt in history. Don't like someone? Make some association between them and the ideology, no matter how direct or indirect it may be, and they go bye-bye.

You'd be right if the word being tossed around described an ideology ("home grown right wing terrorist" or "radical muslim terrorist"). But terrorism alone isn't an ideology. It's a method of acting out, sometimes to express alliance with an ideology yes, but I don't see those kind of insinuations from anyone except the Michael Moore types. Calling it a terrorist attack is just being straightforward.

Republicans & a couple of Dems in the senate showed once again that they are a complete clown show, bought and paid for by special interest.

What a ****ing joke, but who's surprised?

We declared "war" on a tactic. We didn't want to publicly declare war on the real enemy--Islamism. What happened in Boston was inarguably a terrorist attack. What remains to be determined is what motivated the terrorists and whether they were domestic or imported.

I have no problem with expanding background checks. What I have objected to is the Sun King hiding behind the Newtown families, as if background checks would have some likelihood of preventing the next school shooting. Or the next Tucson. We have massive gun violence in this country. Thousands of accidental deaths every year*. Thousands of suicides. Thousands of gang murders. That's where we should focus our attention, not on these mercifully rare school shootings.

The Sun King is in the Rose Garden, proclaiming his disappointment that the measure didn't pass. And he's mentioning Newtown and Aurora and other, similar events. But no mention of the slaughter in our inner cities. Why? Are the innocent kids and grandparents gunned down in those events not important, too?

*More children die every year in accidental shootings than have been killed in all school shootings combined.

I should have been more specific. There's just no reason not to have universal background checks especially with the registry protections that were built into this bill.

Works for me. Background checks are not a magic bullet, however. In the past, we've learned that gang members or gang frontmen, have acquired federal gun dealer licenses, to smooth out that problem of getting new shooting irons. Don't know if that problem has been corrected. Limits on the number of monthly purchases seem reasonable as long as exceptions are permitted where appropriate. I'd feel better about the Sun King here if he had Hadiya Pendleton's parents up there with him. And I know you know that this jihad against "assault" weapons is nonsense, and based almost entirely on cosmetics.
