2nd Term - Part 3 - Echo Chambers, Chorales, and Wingnuts, Oh My!

Ah Maryland - My Maryland. And the EPA. Or -- Let it Rain, Let it Rain, Let it Rain, Rain, Rain..

I believe a number of the suburbs of the Twin Cities have been taxing stormwater for a few years now.

Interesting...

Only Presidents who refused their salary where Hoover and Kennedy. Funny story about Hoover. Being a self made man he didn't need the Presidential salary. However in the 1950's due to Harry Truman not being personally wealthy Congress appropriated a pension for ex Chief Executives. Hoover was on good terms with Truman, and although he didn't need the stipend as the only other living ex-President he took the retirement funds so as to not embarass Truman for needing the money in his post WH years.

Re: 2nd Term - Part 3 - Echo Chambers, Chorales, and Wingnuts, Oh My!

Using the grief of Newtown parents to manipulate the public into supporting legislation which would do nothing to prevent a recurrence is obscene.

Proof of this? The public wants stricter control of gun sales by a 3 to 2 margin...which is the same as it was immediately after Newtown and before anything else was said.

The proof is also on you to say why we should ignore the democratic will of the US in this situation. Are you capable?

Non sequitur alert: polling data have no relationship to the efficacy of the measures offered. The least common kind of gun violence we face are these horrific school shootings. Chicago, about which I've written numerous times, suffers the equivalent of a Newtown every month. Although those victims are usually black and not in some upscale suburb somewhere. The killings occur seriatim and aren't covered wall to wall on the tube. And when one of those killings does break through the media silence (Hadiya Pendleton), the Sun King and his Queen drop by for a photo-op. But the killings continue.

So-called "assault" weapons are seldom used. Besides, the designation "assault weapon" is based almost entirely on cosmetics, and not capabilities. The measures proposed might have some theoretical marginal impact on events which are already statistically rare. But it's emotional nonsense to suggest these proposals will substantially reduce the frequency of those events. Meanwhile, a presumed gang shooting takes the life of a 19-year old father in Chicago on the eve of his daughter's birthday party. It's believed to have been a case of mistaken identity. No ban on "assault" weapons or background check requirement would have prevented this crime.

Adam Lanza used a registered weapon. He had received training in the use of weapons. He had no criminal background. And in all likelihood would have passed any proposed background check. And whether he could pass a background check or not, the weapons were legally owned by his mother and beyond the reach of government. Unless you're advocating some sort of door to door confiscation effort. Every child victim at Newtown was shot more than once. One child was shot 11 times. Reducing the capacity of the magazines available to Lanza doesn't seem very likely to have reduced the number of victims. I doubt having to reload a few more times would have deterred him. And if lower capacity magazines slowed him down a bit, perhaps he would have shot the one child only 6 times instead of 11.

In case you missed it in your high school government class, the United States is a representative democracy. The "democratic will" you refer to is expressed on election day, not to poll takers. Let me answer your question about my capabilities with a question of my own: are you capable of making an argument, about anything, that makes sense?

Amazing. The Gosnell case is starting to get a little attention from the mainstream media. I'm sure they'll back off as soon as they can though. Though I think there's a few outlets that may be actually getting interested in the case. Kudos to them.

Here's the grand jury report in all its horrific detail:

If you have a weak stomach, don't read it.

The WaPo has started to cover it and will be sending a reporter up. However the killer quote about the executive editor, Martin Baron in today's Style (!) section "[He] wasn't aware of the story until Thursday night." Baron is quoted as saying "...We never decide what to cover for ideological reasons, no matter what the critics might claim..."

Forgive me, but I'm calling horsebleep on that one, Mr. Baron.

They must think people are really gullible to believe that.

Don't want to start a 3rd term thread just yet, but apparently, according to the Boston Herald, Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is getting support in liberal circles as an alternative to the Hillary Clinton.

Please.

Lyawatha would make a great president, she can lie cheat and steal with the best of them

Like the 30-year old school girl who could afford tuition at Georgetown Law, but wanted to force that Catholic institution to pay for her birth control. She became a national "celebrity" because a radio talk show host called her a bad name. No ideology there.

Alright, this one perfectly fits the stereotypes here...

White House calling Boston a terrorist attack. We can say goodbye to even more provisions of the Constitution.

Look at the headline on this article:

"Online Furor Draws Press to Abortion Doctor’s Trial"

Gee, NY Times editors, if it weren't for the "online furor" there'd be nothing newsworthy in a story about someone who removes babies from women and then kills the babies??

One can argue over when "abortion" is "okay" or not, but this is totally different: the baby is already outside the womb and it is alive.

Yet the NY Times doesn't want to cover the story at all......and if it weren't for the "online furor" probably would not be.

And overweight 30-year old school girls who want someone else to pay for their birth control.
