2024 Elections: One Last Chance for Democracy

He’s dropping out. It’s not like he stayed in the race and the primary was overridden at the convention.

Does he have to stay in the race against his will?

What if he dropped dead?

Biden was probably going to lose. If he didn’t agree, he wouldn’t have dropped out. Harris, who he will endorse, might lose as well, but right now she has more upside.

He was forced out and we all know it.
And if he dies... They're already protocols in place have been since the Constitution was created so that's a moot point.
As to whether or not he was probably going to lose anyway we don't know that. The polling may have said so...but we've seen how accurate the polling has been in the last few election cycles so I really don't give a crap what the polling says

Though the fact that between the debate performance, the GOP-GOP shooting, and the RNC it didn't move in the other direction is also quite telling. I guess I can't pretend to know if the message it tells is "Biden went through the worst things and people still didn't flock to Trump, so there's only Biden upside" or "the bad things didn't kill your side and have left you still very much in the game, so here's a chance to reconfigure things and hit the home stretch running".

I won't lie I flip flop on that too...but with a vocal group wanting to have an open convention it puts everything in flux. The money they raised can only be used by Harris. The infrastructure in place is for Biden Harris. The Michigan ballot has Biden Harris. If anyone but her wins the Dems are beyond screwed. They need to unite and the delegates need to stick or whoever the candidate is is on their own 1 yard line down 6 with a minute to play and no time outs.

The constitution DOESN’T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH A PARTY CHOOSING THEIR CANDIDATE.

The process would be exactly the same if Biden had died before the convention

Wonder how all the people who called Biden “genocide joe” will feel about Kamala.

I know one of these nuts who literally just posted that it was the free Palestine movement that caused Biden to drop out

I think Biden probably negotiated how this is going to go down.

For anyone to challenge Harris they would need the signatures of 300 delegates to the convention. Is anyone going to stick their neck out and cause more chaos?

I’d almost bet money on Harris being at the top of the ticket at this point.

Normally I agree with you...but too many people wanted an open convention and I'm just not sure.

You are correct though it's on the delegates now. If they stay strong I can have a bit of hope. I am not lying when I say I think Harris is something special now that she is more confident on the big stage. She talks about abortion and really connects.

Hey if gets them to vote Blue...

One nice thing is we know the GOP will make themselves look stupid over this right Mikey Johnson?

A few random thoughts and questions…

- If Biden didn’t have an awful performance at the debate, would people still be calling for him to step down?
- As someone who is dealing with a parent with Alzheimer’s and watching her memory decline, I’m wondering if there had been signs earlier. It has seemed like he has gotten worse little by little over the past months.
- Also as someone dealing with a parent with Alzheimer’s, I know the smallest things can cause even more of a decline. My mom had diverticulitis in May and I noticed that her memory took a dip more so than usual. Wondering if this bout with COVID did enough to make Biden realize it’s really now the time.
- I hated how people started coming out to calf or him to step down. People like George Clooney and Stephen Colbert. It wasn’t their call!
- I hope Kamala picks Pete Buttigieg as her running mate because how mad or upset would the MAGATs be with Black/Indian Woman President and Gay Vice President.

This whole situation is so unnerving.

Ultimately, yes, the party is a private organization and we are doing nothing more than informing the private organization as to how they should make their choice. That's why we're voting for delegates and not directly for the nominee. And that's why the super-delegates exist, if they feel we somehow made a horribly wrong decision and need to correct it. And earlier on, the primaries chose very few if any of those delegates, as they were still chosen behind closed doors; it's only in the last 50 years it's been as representative as it is. All of that is very true. Still doesn't mean the optics don't kinda suck a bit, though.

Bingo.

He doesn't have Alzheimers...and as someone whose dad has the early stages of dementia I'm not sure he has that either. He is slower though and that has been noticeable.

Agree with your last 2 points wholeheartedly.

To be clear, I’m not anti-Biden and I’m grateful he was president for the last 3.5 years. I’ve just seen the writing on the wall since the debate. I hope the party falls in line and respects his public endorsement of Harris, they owe it to him for taking this one for the team.

now assuming Harris is at the top of the ticket, who will she choose for VP?

Josh Shapiro?
Andy Beshear?
Gretchen Whitmer?
Roy Cooper?
Pete Buttigieg?
??

We are in better shape than we were this morning. We'll rally around Harris. The GOP just lost 96% of their message. Everybody should stop whining and get to work on their neighbors.

My neighbors were never wavering...I'm surrounded by Omar voters ;)

I agree if it's Harris.

Why is the Michigan ballot set before the convention? The party didn’t officially have a nominee yet.

I’m guessing Shapiro (fine with me) although I could live with beshear, Pete, or whitmer.

id like to say a Harris - whitmer or Harris-buttogieg ticket works. Are swing voters gonna care about two women, or a black woman and gasp, a gay?

id like to think the bigots who can’t handle diversity weren’t voting dem anyway

I want Pete...he is brilliant and delivers messaging on a level rarely seen. Plus him vs. Vance would be a bloodbath.

My friends think Shapiro will be the choice cause Trump desperately needs Pennsylvania and this kneecaps that.

I don't get Beshear...I mean I like him but what did he bring? (Honestly asking)

Fwiw I was never a Biden guy never wanted him as President. He won me over and I just think he deserved way better.

They will. It's career suicide to contest it.

Any of them work, along with Mark Kelly.
