This is interesting.

tldr: Polling indicates Dump has the nomination locked up, but 24% of Republican primary voters say they will not consider voting for Dump.

Trump is like meth... A solid amount of R's know it's toxic AF. But a small core just need to keep taking hits to get through their day.

I will believe it when I see it that the derps don't actually vote for him in the general, after Fox et al pump them full of cray for the next 18 months about Biden's Walmart Death Camps.

So basically, the majority issues for Republican primary voters (the most hardcore base) going into 2024 are:

*Anti-Woke
*Muh Gunz!1!!1
*Denial of Reality (i.e., Trump won in 2020)
*Own the Libs

Quite the policy-driven platform.

You forgot:

*Too many people voting
*Education is bad
*Hunter!!
*A whole bunch of problems we've made up

Biden approval slips to new low in wake of 2024 campaign launch: survey | The Hill

Good old wishy-washy Democrats, needing oral to get them to show up.

Meh, that 18% undecided/other will break for Biden over Trump. Right now Trump is benefiting from a (relatively) quiet news cycle as far as his own current actions are concerned. As soon as the campaign heats up and he's in the news daily again, people will remember why they voted against him 4 years ago.

Trump's floor and ceiling are known. That's both his strength for primary season and his weakness for the general.

The New York Times today includes stories about:
  • Why convicted fraudster Elizabeth Holmes isn't so bad
  • Why Manhattan DA Bragg's case against Trump is weak
  • Two pieces stoking fear of a migrant caravan to the southern border.
  • Three pieces on DeSantis 2024
The cover story in NYT Magazine is a puff piece on Kristen Sinema.

NYT is garbage. Not just the editorials, but the news as well. Anyone who continues to feed them money is complicit.

Just curious, but who should you use instead? And you get negative infinity points if any form or variation of "overly curated social media feed" plays any part.

WaPo is better, at least. UP and API are better.

For world news I use international: DW, France 24, Le Monde, WION, Haaretz, Anadalou, BBC, AJ. Each of them has particular blind spots and agendae.

I don't need a US news source. We create it here. You want freedom fries with that?

I mean, UPI and AP are just generic news services you can find anywhere, including the NYT.

WaPo has similar "access journalism" issues as the NYT. The next Bob Woodward isn't walking through that door with the Pentagon Papers anymore there, either.

The foreign stuff, I will read the Beeb and AJ stuff when relevant, but they aren't ever going to be my go to source for every day news because I couldn't care less about the monarchy, cricket, sunni-shia relations, or the latest from generic Arab dictator 5.0.

That's not to say the NYT is heads and shoulders above the rest, but even considering its flaws, it's not like it's generic Gannett local daily (aka the USA Today plus 1 page of local news) or cable television level of bad, either.

For the record, i either subscribe to or am a sustaining member to: NYT, NPR (technically Iowa Public Radio), The Economist, and The Atlantic. I also pay for a Total Fark membership at Fark.com, which is my news aggregator of choice cause sometimes you just have to laugh, even if it's dark humor. There are a couple of other places I'll visit daily for more local news.

We tried WaPo at one point when it was like $10/6 mo. thru Amazon, but gave it up.

jesus no. they're terrible. It's a bespoke echo chamber.

Honestly, there isn't a great paper of record anymore. Not in the traditional sense. So I don't have a great answer for you.

I do subscribe to the WaPo and I agree with you that they're kind of NYT-lite when it comes to access journalism. My opinion is that they're less worse than the NYT. Probably because the NYT is such a large and easy target. But that's just a hunch. Maybe it's because the fall was so great. Don't know.

I still think the NYT is a special breed of garbage.

I'm particularly butthurt over NYT because it was my family's paper growing up. Granted, WSJ was for Plutes, Newsday and Daily News were for derps and NY Post was for subliterate fascists, so there was no other choice for an intelligent New Yorker. But NYT at that time was divided between the fawning reporting on the Hamptons and weddings (a.k.a., "Mergers & Acquisitions") and real news. Unless the story was about Shoreham or Israel, you could trust it.

Then the Harvard MBAs gutted their news division and became Urban Baby: the Newspaper. And they're still going bankrupt, so now they're just "All the News that Fits the Wealthy Class Narrative, We Print."

I won’t even pay for wapo anymore after some of their terrible takes, but they were better than nyt
