2024-25: D3whky

Northland only has 12 skaters and 2 goalies? Sheesh. I knew the program and even the school itself were in a rough situation, and the PWHL Minnesota offseason coverage was whiny and sanctimonious enough to make me take the side of the people running the team and the league over Bobrowski and Darwitz, but that's brutal. Credit to them for being able to stay in any of these games at all.

When they were slated to close, the players that could found new schools. Northland will have to rebuild the confidence of prospective students that the school will remain open during their 4 year tenure. That they trimmed their academic offerings to reduce costs to stay open makes that harder as they will lose any players interested in the shut down majors.

Calling Manhattanville a bad team is a stretch...They played Wes on one day of rest after playing Saturday and Sunday. Right now...almost 50% of their schedule is against teams ranked in the top 15 in the country. Utica, Naz, Oswego, and Cortland. They also play two NESCAC teams as well. They have been very competitive for a team heavy with freshmen and sophomores.

With all due respect, Manhattanville just lost a home game to Rivier. I don't think they're a good team, which is a shame for a once proud program.

New USCHO poll:

1) Middlebury
2) UW-River Falls
3) Amherst
4) Adrian
5) GAC
6) Oswego
7) Plattsburgh
8) Augsburg
9) Cortland
10) Bowdoin
11) Utica
12) UW-Eau Claire
13) Colby
13) Hamline
15) Endicott

Top 8 remains unchanged. Cortland, Bowdoin (despite the Endicott loss) and Utica all go up 1 spot. Eau Claire fell three spots after losing to a 1-win team. Colby and Hamline both jumped to tie at 13. Endicott joining the rankings.

DIII Hockey News Poll:

1) Midd
2) UWRF
3) GAC
4) Amherst
5) Adrian
6) Plattsburgh
7) Oswego
8) Augsburg
9) Cortland
10) Bowdoin
11) Utica
12) Hamline
13) UWEC
14) Endicott
15) SNC

Biggest gulfs between the two poll voters appear to be Hamline and Colby. SNC has the most numer of votes outside the top 15 for USCHO which is why I don't think there is as much a difference of opinion there.

Here's the latest bracketology based on the current standings and the unofficial NPI on the USCHO site. I went with Augsburg as this projected bracket doesn't change much regardless of who the MIAC winner is...

First Round

Norwich at Plattsburgh
SNC at Augsburg
Wilkes at Oswego
Nazareth at Endicott

QF
Platts/Nor at Middlebury
Augs/SNC at UW-River Falls

Oz/Wilkes at Bowdoin
End/Naz at Amherst

With all due respect, Manhattanville just lost a home game to Rivier. I don't think they're a good team, which is a shame for a once proud program.

Yeah... they outshot and outplayed them all game. The puck was in the Rivier end for most of the game. Rivier's goalie played great and won the game for them. It happens. Doesn't get any easier with Conn College, Oswego, Utica and NAZ coming up over the next 4 weeks.

This will be an interesting next few weekends for the NESCAC. This weekend #1 Middlebury hosts #3 Amherst for their annual pair of games. Next weekend Midd hosts the Polar bears, and the weekend after that Amherst hosts the Polar Bears. By the time this completes we should know who is going to be hosting the NESCAC tournament.

Usually the Panthers and the Mammoths split their games, meaning it comes down to who makes the fewest mistakes in the rest of the season, and Amherst has a slight edge in that department.

-In the most predictable result ever, Amherst and Middlebury skate to a 1-1 tie. Other NESCAC scores were Colby getting upset by Connecticut College 2-1. Hamilton over Wesleyan 1-0, and Trinity over Williams 2-1. 9 goals over 4 games!

-2 SUNYAC teams avoid massive upsets, huge for NCAA hopes:

-Cortland escapes yet again, scoring with roughly a minute remaining and winning in OT at home over Canton, who defeated them earlier this season
-Oz takes a 4-3 OT win in a back and forth game over Potsdam at Maxcy Hall

-In another fairly predicable result, UWRF started slow, messing around with UW Superior. It was 2-2 in the later half of the second period before the floodgates opened. Falcons take it 8-2. This seems to be a common trend with this team.

-GAC looked as impressive as they have all year, thumping Saint Mary's 6-0 in complete domination.

-St. Norbert started extremely fast on the road at upstart Concordia-Wisconsin, outshooting them 15-2, and leading 2-0 in the game after 1 period. CUW seemed to find their legs a bit and play competitively, but the damage was done, as SNC takes the all-important game 3-0.

-In other notable games, Adrian crushes Lake Forest 10-1, Augsburg beats an underrated Bethel team 2-0, and Endicott takes care of business in a 5-2 win over Curry

Middlebury actually scored in overtime to win it, but the ref waved it off. It was a weird play where the puck butterflied over the top of the goalie, hit the padding at the bottom of the net just inside the post, and then bounced back over the goal line. The referee was not quite in position yet as he was skating beside the net and only saw it after it came out and he waved it off. Middleberry did win the shootout, with their first shooter undressing Stott, and the second shooter beating her with a shot clean. Surprising.

Today's Norwich vs Albertus Magnus game was ruled a no contest following a really bad boarding injury. Looking at a clip someone shared with me it appears that Albertus sophomore Gabriella Dellacroce slammed Norwich sophomore Breanna Ricker in the boards making no attempt at playing the puck, was playing the body the whole time.

I'm really concerned as I've seen games continue after pretty bad injuries so for them to call it has me concerned for Ricker's well being. Hopefully she is fine but she didn't move at all after being boarded except for possibly a foot twitch.

EDIT: I misread the jersey from the clip I watched and the injured player appears to be Ricker, not Lisac. Either way I hope the injured player is ok.

Norwich Athletics released the following statement clarifying:

Saturday's contest between the Norwich Women's Ice Hockey team and Albertus Magnus is officially recorded as a no contest after play halted at 12:54 of the second period due to a significant injury. Per ruling by New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Comissioner Katie Boldvich, Norwich will be awarded a forfeit victory in the conference standing so each team has the same number of games played since they held a 6-0 lead at the point of the stoppage. The two teams can choose to resume the contest if they choose.

According to NCAA Rule 82.5:
If a game is suspended, there are three possible options:
1. Resume the game at a later date;
2. If two periods have been played and resuming the game at a later date is not an option, the game shall be terminated with the final score what it was at the point of interruption; or
3. Declare a no contest if less than two full periods have been completed.

No word on the condition of the injured Norwich player (said to be Breanna Ricker but even that is unconfirmed).

In other action:

#1 Middlebury with a 3-1 win over #3 Amherst.

#2 UW-River Falls defeats UW-Superior 5-2.

#4 Adrian College completes the sweep of Lake Forest with a 5-0 win. Callie Wollschlager with 2 goals and an assist.

St. Mary's defeats #5 Gustavus Adolphus 2-0 (ENG).

#6 Oswego completes the sweep of Potsdam with a 3-0 win. Ashlyn McGrath with a goal and assist.

#7 Plattsburgh drubs Morrisville 7-0 for the sweep. The first line scored even strength for the first time since 12/6; in fact, every line was involved with a goal including the 4th line creating the final goal.

#8 Augsburg completes a sweep of Bethel with a 4-1 win. Emily Cronkhite had 3 assists.

#9 Canton completed their sweep of Canton, 5-1. Fanny Aneborn had 2 goals. The Red Dragons scored 2 shorthanded goals on what looks like the same power play followed by an ENG in the last minute (why Canton bothered to go empty net down 4-1 in the last minute is surprising.

#12 UW-Eau Claire with a 6-0 win over UW-Stevens Point. Madisyn Krumholz with a goal and 2 assists.

#13 Colby got revenge for their upset loss to Conn College with a 3-2 win. 2 of Colby's 3 goals came on the power play and the Mules had scored all of their goals by midway through the game.

St. Olaf upset the other #13, Hamline with a 2-1 win. Haley Eder-Zdechilik put the Pipers up 1-0 in the 2nd but the Oles scored 2 3rd period goals to win.

#15 Endicott defeated Curry 4-0. Teaghan Hall and Rivers Morris each had a goal and an assist.

SNC swept Concordia (WI) with a 4-3 win. The Green nights had gotten all the way up to a 4-2 lead on an ENG by Natalie Hogan but SNC conceded a goal with 6 seconds left to Scout Stromberg.

Suffolk defeated WNEU 4-3

Wilkes swept Neumann 3-0 on 2 goals and an assist from Lily Zingaro.

Notable results from the weekend:

Middlebury and Bowdoin split a pair up at Chip Kenyon Arena. Middlebury won the opener 2-0, but the Polar Bears answered with a 2-1 victory on Saturday. Massive showing for Bowdoin, despite being pretty severely outplayed. If they can split with Amherst next weekend, I think they’re in great shape for an at-large.

I can’t promise that though, bc these new NPI rankings fluctuate A LOT, and Bowdoin’s non-con schedule was very weak overall.

speaking of Amherst, they were upset by a less-than-great Wesleyan team for the second straight year. Amherst bounced back on Saturday to earn a split. They still sit at #3 in the NPI somehow.

Augsburg earned 2 more impressive wins, sweeping a good Hamline team in a pair of nail biters, the second coming in OT. Nora Stepan put together a 7 point weekend including the OT GWG that cemented a Saturday hat trick.

River Falls, as expected, pasted Northland in a sweep.

Gustavus, after losing their captain for the season last weekend, continues to be carried by the MIAC’s leading scorer, Lily Mortenson, who put up 7 points of her own in a 2 game sweep of St Kate’s.

Adrian had goals a plenty from across the board, sweeping Dubuque and putting up 16 goals Saturday. These blowout wins are what ultimately gives AC so many All-Americans every year

Plattsburgh looked really good on Friday, then the opposite on Saturday, but got 2 wins against Butf State.

the inverse can be said of Cortland, who was very sloppy against Morrisville Friday, but looked crisp Saturday. Another sweep for a SUNYAC headliner.

Oswego bounced back from the Amherst loss by annihilating a bad Manhattanville team in a 2 game home sweep.

I think the SUNYAC is pretty close to locking up at least 2 bids. Cortland and Oswego just are not losing the games they play poorly in, which is a change from years past. I think 2/3 of Platty, Oz and Cortland will get in.

In a shocker, Elmira got swept on the road at Salve Regina. For as poor as the NEHC has become, Elmira could not afford to lose these. It’ll be a one bid league for sure now.

Lastly, this to me looks like the best Endicott team since 19-20, as they dominate UNE with two commanding wins.

The way its looking with Midd, Amherst and Bowdoin in line for bids the SUNYAC is a 2 bid league only if Augsburg wins the MIAC.
