6,705 on hand, unheard of for the QF round. I still don't know if I like the single elimination format. The only thing I like about it is definitely increases the chance you have a good atmosphere because everyone knows they just have to commit to that one game. I suspect that is what the league likes about it.
That third period was an unmitigated cluster. They are fortunate to have survived. I don't like the way they are playing lately.
Regardless of what Brown has said, am I the only one that is starting to get concerned about Perreault? Yesterday's game mattered, so I have to believe that if he was able to play he would have. If he's not back next week, I will officially graduate from concerned to panic.
He settled with the first game line of Gasseau, Gauthier and Malone and moved Jelvik into Perreault's spot on the line with Smith and Leonard. Jelvik is probably the most like Perreault of anyone on the team so that may actually work in Perreault's absence.
I think this is the way to go until Perreault makes it back.
Getting both him and Vote back at 100% changes this lineup in a big way.
Interestingly the 2012 championship team did not have a 30-goal scorer but almost the entire team made it to the NHL and had 7 guys with 10+ goals. This year's team could match that if Malone can get one more goal as he currently has 9.
Let's give some credit to Connecticut. They have some legitimate skilled players who can control play. I think they are probably behind BC and BU the most skilled in the league but do not have enough depth. If they had a goaltender like Maine or UMass Lowell had in the past they would be title contenders. Cavanaugh probably knows Greg Brown as well as anyone so he came prepared. Setting up his best line against BC's second line was a smart move as well as keeping BC's top line in check. BC had released its line chart well before UConn so I am not sure if that was taken into consideration or is even correct protocol. One thing I noticed is that Brown was switching lines around a lot during the game perhaps just looking for the right combinations. That can explain some of the sloppiness. He settled with the first game line of Gasseau, Gauthier and Malone and moved Jelvik into Perreault's spot on the line with Smith and Leonard. Jelvik is probably the most like Perreault of anyone on the team so that may actually work in Perreault's absence.
UMass is probably looking at how effective UConn forchecked BC and game planning that into their matchup with BC. Meanwhile BC needs to tighten up their D and make shorter passes on their breakouts. The BC broadcast team talked about the forwards helping out more and not standing around so much when UConn was creating good offense.
Pretty much every team is playing BC the same way, either neutral zone trap or extreme forecheck (BU in particular). There are ways around this but it's still a tough nut to crack. For the most part it's feast or famine, if you're not good at it you're looking at many odd-man rushes. No matter what you'll get some. The name of the game is cashing in on them.
Count me in as doubtful on Perreault coming back this weekend. Not sure what the deal is but if there's any danger of reinjury he's not coming in before the NCAAs and even that is questionable with a first-rounder's health in the balance. That being said, if he's 80% but able to play without risk, you play him and slot everyone back to where they belong. Would like to see a dominating win but given that it's Umass it'll be super tight.
