2023 - 2024 SEASON : Boston College

They barely got by the skin of their teeny teeny teeth tonight. UConn had a PP at the end and a 6 on 4 with the goalie pulled.

Hopefully coach Brown can get this team going against UMass Friday. Lots to talk about and things to fix.

I don't even know what to say. That was a weird 60 minutes of hockey and it was not very good. Fowler saved their bacon again.

Third period was horrific, they looked like they didn't want to be there. Credit to Greg Brown for moving some pieces around late in the period to try to jumpstart this team. At one point Uconn had the PP, the goalie pulled, and a BC player with a broken stick for a de facto 6x3 before Fowler made a save and luckily dove to cover it in that final 2 minutes.

You'd like to think this will be a wakeup call for BC but I'm not sure. Clearly they are a different team without Perreault but the effort and disinterest was pretty disheartening, especially for the entire 3rd period. They were outplayed IMO but buried their chances.

Umass will launch this team into the sun if they play like this next Friday.

Jellvik/Malone/Gasseau were all very good tonight. Cutter was quiet. Fowler/Leonard bring it every night. Powell is just sneaky good.

Armstrong had a rough one. Minnetian on the 3rd Yukon goal I'm not even going to get into.

Just keep winning I guess. Gritty not pretty.

Very shaky win, in the first 6 minutes their skates didn't touch the ice, after that not so much. Fowler was better than his good ole self, he was great. They miss Perreault big time, they are not the same team without him the top three lines are scrambled. Umass is going to be a tough out.

6,705 on hand, unheard of for the QF round. I still don't know if I like the single elimination format. The only thing I like about it is definitely increases the chance you have a good atmosphere because everyone knows they just have to commit to that one game. I suspect that is what the league likes about it.

If you saw Brown's midweek presser on youtube somewhere he at least seemed like someone who thinks Perreault will be back. I am hoping that means against UMass. But if it takes holding him out another week until NCAA tournament so be it. They shouldn't need him to close out a 4-1 lead at home against UConn. That game should have been done and dusted. I guess the only good thing I can say about it is it gave them a chance to work through some adversity in a high pressure game. And they pulled it out.

I had the same thought. Good crowd at Agganis last night and it just seemed like it wouldn't have been the same atmosphere if nobody's season was ending with the game.

That third period was an unmitigated cluster. They are fortunate to have survived. I don't like the way they are playing lately.

Regardless of what Brown has said, am I the only one that is starting to get concerned about Perreault? Yesterday's game mattered, so I have to believe that if he was able to play he would have. If he's not back next week, I will officially graduate from concerned to panic.

I’m definitely concerned he won’t be back. If hes not back, I want to see them break up the Leonard, Smith and Gauthier line. Put Gauthier back with Gasseau and Jellvik. Move someone up with Smith and Leonard. That line hasn’t clicked, and teams can really focus on on matching up with them. This team was really humming when they had scoring from 2 lines+. It’d be one thing if they clicked and were dominating together but they’re not. Hopefully Perrault is back but even if he’s not, break them up

Let's give some credit to Connecticut. They have some legitimate skilled players who can control play. I think they are probably behind BC and BU the most skilled in the league but do not have enough depth. If they had a goaltender like Maine or UMass Lowell had in the past they would be title contenders. Cavanaugh probably knows Greg Brown as well as anyone so he came prepared. Setting up his best line against BC's second line was a smart move as well as keeping BC's top line in check. BC had released its line chart well before UConn so I am not sure if that was taken into consideration or is even correct protocol. One thing I noticed is that Brown was switching lines around a lot during the game perhaps just looking for the right combinations. That can explain some of the sloppiness. He settled with the first game line of Gasseau, Gauthier and Malone and moved Jelvik into Perreault's spot on the line with Smith and Leonard. Jelvik is probably the most like Perreault of anyone on the team so that may actually work in Perreault's absence.

I think this is the way to go until Perreault makes it back.

Getting both him and Vote back at 100% changes this lineup in a big way.

My big concern is how much rust both guys have and at what level they return at. Are they coming back at 100% or 80%. Hopefully they can come back and be meaningful contributors but until I hear otherwise, I’m aligning my expectations of them not being in the lineup next weekend

Here is the interview I was talking about

I don't know, maybe Brown is a master of disguise but this didn't seem like a coach who expects Perreault to be out for the season. Vote has been out forever so I am not expecting him back at this stage of the season. I suppose it's possible but it would surprise me.

They have not been good at holding leads all year long including the last game at home against UConn. You have to give them credit for getting the GWG and moving onto the semifinal without Perrault in the lineup. That’s 50 points we lost without him being in the lineup.

would put Malone with Smith and Leonard. He is a 5th year player and a very good center. Jevlik is best with Cutter and Gasseau. I think that gives them two very good scoring lines.

Go Eagles!

A PWR twist or decision for the committee if they stick by their stupid avoiding intra conference matchups in round one rule...BC would play one of the NCHC 4 seeds...I know that's just a snapshot at the moment.

UMass is probably looking at how effective UConn forchecked BC and game planning that into their matchup with BC. Meanwhile BC needs to tighten up their D and make shorter passes on their breakouts. The BC broadcast team talked about the forwards helping out more and not standing around so much when UConn was creating good offense.

BC is more than likely working on the tight forechecking in practice this week and if they figure a way out which is highly likely they will be even more explosive offensively as the opponents will have a man or two behind the play as a result. Much like how basketball teams break the press and get easy scores when they do.

Pretty much every team is playing BC the same way, either neutral zone trap or extreme forecheck (BU in particular). There are ways around this but it's still a tough nut to crack. For the most part it's feast or famine, if you're not good at it you're looking at many odd-man rushes. No matter what you'll get some. The name of the game is cashing in on them.

Count me in as doubtful on Perreault coming back this weekend. Not sure what the deal is but if there's any danger of reinjury he's not coming in before the NCAAs and even that is questionable with a first-rounder's health in the balance. That being said, if he's 80% but able to play without risk, you play him and slot everyone back to where they belong. Would like to see a dominating win but given that it's Umass it'll be super tight.

Both Perreault and Vote are likely at 100% at skating now as they have been skating for a while and their legs are not the issues. Their delay must be at clearance to play in Vote's case especially or additional hesitance to play in making sure Perreault is 100% healed.
