2022 NCAA Tournament

Something about tonight is screaming 5-4 to me. Not sure who wins it. Should be a phenomenal game. Ever since the bracket was released, this was the final matchup I was craving.

I think we're going to get treated to one hell of a game tonight between the two best teams in the country.

I hate the fact that I even had this thought, but as much of a toss-up as this game appears to be and the difference in style of play between these two teams, let’s just hope it doesn’t come down to the third team on the ice! If the officials do become an unfortunate factor, the game could be decided on which team has the ability to adjust to the way the game is being called. Christ, I hope not, but I also won’t be too shocked if it does.

Don’t get me wrong here… there are some very capable officials, but there are also those who shouldn’t be within a mile of the rink for a game like this. We’ll just have to see if there is a collective moan from the crowd when the stripes take the ice. :0)

Cheers!!!

Being 31 and 1 is a great accomplishment congratulations Adrian
also many thought Geneseo was going to get blown out, they did not. They outshot Adrian 30 to 23. The glaring statistic is the 24 blocked shots by Adrian. Tough loss for Geneseo

Congratulations Adrian. You were the best team all season long, and the most disciplined team in your program’s history.

The Elia penalty was a real blow to Geneseo. They still hung tough and carried the play in the second period, but it had to be increasingly difficult without a key Dman as the game progressed. Geneseo still had a shot to tie it up in the third, but Adrian blocked a lot of pucks during Geneseo's PPs and Petizian erred in leaving his crease at the wrong time. All in all, I thought they acquitted themselves very well. Congrats especially to the seniors for their stellar play and leadership. They played a big roll in bringing the program to the next level.

As we were out to dinner I did not see the Elia penalty. A friend who did thought it should not have been a five. Any thoughts?
I also thought the weekend might not have D3 stripes.

The five was handed out after the review, so I have to go with it. They see a lot more angles than what the NCAA stream shows.

Adrian hunkered down defensively impressively well in the later stages of the second and all of the 3rd.

I would say no way to a 5 minute major, not sure if the replay changed the minds of the refs??? I don't like the fact that they used replay, when they don't use it all season long, slowed the game, and the refs have zero experience with it.I am sure others have their own opinion which is fine...Genny didn't not capitalize on the PP but did get a shorty, live and die on the special teams in the playoffs.

It always felt like just a matter of time until Adrian finally got one. And while it may be a sour consolation for Geneseo this morning, that same feeling very much applies to them.

The hit was directly in front of where we were sitting and you could hear the contact with the helmet. It was one of those plays where you instantly look around expecting to see an arm up. I was surprised they didn’t make any call live, but definitely disappointed they made it 5 and a game after no call to begin with.

Would Nic have been more cautious if it wasn't for the no call on the apparent head shot he took in the UNE game? I have to wonder. (I think they asked for a review but didn't get one.)

There seems to be a decided Western bent to the men's hockey landscape in both the D3 and D1 spheres. The old RBC Cup has also been dominated by Western teams in the past decade or so. Is this an aberration, or a trend moving forward?

They do? I thought they just had the same cameras the broadcast has.

This is what happens when I respond quickly while trying to do a thousand things covering the event.

For that review, you are correct.

For reviews in general, they do have access to the same system the ECAC puts in and leaves for a week for the NCAA to use. That includes cameras on the bluelines for offsides reviews and the overhead cameras above the goals. The last time this was in Lake Placid, Jeff Fulton, who was the video review ref, gave me the full "tour" of the system. (I assume they did the same this year.)

For the review we were talking about, they still have better technology to look at it than what the NCAA stream is going to replay. The refs can slow it down and zoom in as well. Thus, they will get a much, much better look than what us fans quickly saw on the one or two replays the stream showed.

Whether video reviews should be used at all in D3 when they are never used the rest of the season is certainly open for debate.

Right now, in all (I believe) D3 sports, video reviews are used from the semifinals and finals.

The refs aren't alone. They are assisted by an experienced video review ref (usually the same one who does the D1 Frozen Four). So, they are mentored through the whole process as well as the review itself.

I don't know what you mean by change their minds. Of course their minds were changed. They never made the call in the first place. Adrian used one of the challenges to have it looked at.

Chris Schultz was not upset with the call. Though he thought it was a good hit live, he said the video review doesn't lie, so he accepted it.

A hit to the head is five minutes. Period. They had no other choice once it was decided it was a hit to the head.
