2022 Beijing Olympics: Don't Mention the Slaves

Oh man….if the US wins gold because the Russian cheating is exposed on Chinese soil….

(Checks to be sure he has no assets in Ukraine or Taiwan)

Story.

Get your popcorn because this is about to get good. Online discussion is centered around that the athlete in question is the 15 year old female skater and that it wasn’t a PED but a diuretic which can be used as a masking agent.

Russian officials are vehemently denying reports they are going to invade the Ukraine, which is an odd response because they aren't even being asked about that here.

They mentioned a few days ago that a Japanese jumper had her jump not allowed for the same reason. Apparently, athletes are allowed just a 4cm difference from their body. But is that all directions at the same time, or just if you flatten it out??? Seems like clever design would put some sace forward so that the aero would push the suit out for more lift.

Then again, ski jumping is an odd sport- you'd think that farthest wins, but style matters- so there are judges.... Which meant that every time anyone found a better way to jump, it took some time to accept it.

I read recently that Gu apparently applied for some sort of academic scholarship that is only open to American citizens. So, take that as you want...

The same article talked about the men hockey players playing for Team China. The implication was no way those guys gave up their American citizenship, especially since some have absolutely no ties to China or even Asian blood in them. The article concluded that China is definitely relaxing their citizenship laws this time around to build up their medal count.

There’s a few differences between Gu and the people playing on the hockey team.

1. The hockey players basically had no other chance to play in the Olympics other than for China while Gu was an emerging talent that even competed and won as an American on the World Cup circuit in 2019 before switching.

2. Gu is being used by the PRC as one of the marketing faces of the Games while the hockey players are pretty clearly being kept hidden.

The more I read about Gu, the less I like. It’s pretty obvious she (and likely her mom) was bought off by the PRC and is now being used as a sports washing pawn. And worst, she’s willingly going right along with it all.

Kep must be going nuts, with an American getting gold in Snowboard Halfpipe. Chloe Kim did amazing, and then twice tried to hit a new trick- close on her last attempt.

There’s reports that the medal ceremony for the Team Figure Skating has been delayed because an issue with the Totally Not Russia team and a doping issue from prior to the games (because there’s no way the Chinese are going to allow a positive test for Russia at the games).

Maybe they should actually ban the country doping 15 year olds instead of repeatedly placating them.

All these are fine points. But it was not what I was responding to. You were wondering if Gu actually gave up her US citizenship. I provided evidence that she did not, based on an application and based on other "China" athletes not giving up their US citizenship despite the strict Chinese citizenship laws.

I mean, hockey is being kept hidden because up until two months ago they weren’t even confirmed in the games, and up until a month ago their biggest goal was going to be holding their opponent to single digits. Guess we’ll see in a few minutes how they’ll perform against college kids.

Gu clearly went to the highest bidder, but at least she has some connection to China. A guy like Chelios just happened to sign with the right KHL team three years ago.

WRT hockey- there are two rinks in action.... Didn't realize that until I see that both US and Canada are playing at the same time.

Good thing the US is playing China, since we are still working to gel. After 1, Canada is up 3-0 on Germany, were as the US is up 1-0 on China.

Yooper, and NMU grad, Nick Baumgartner had a heartbreaking finish in his quarterfinal race in Snowboard Cross last night. Legged out an early lead with his team USA teammate in their heat race when a racer bit it early leaving just three racers for the top two spots.

Jockey'd with his USA teammate for first and second, but the Austrian racer caught them and weaved through them.

Nick had a chance to be aggressive in one of the final turns, but his snowboard would have tangled with his Team USA teammate, so he backed off and took the turn a little wide, watching his teammate and Austrian pull away.

Heartbreaking loss for Nick, oldest Team USA snowboarder, in his fourth Olympics. Closest he has been was fourth place in PyeongChang 2018.
