Distance running AND sprinting. They have 2 sports. But the asians already have their stupid ping pong, and I think there is some kind of martial arts that is boring as all hell too.

My guess is that gender has to have something to do with it, whether they admit it or not. No girls = no 'lympics.
Simple solution, add girls wrestling. Mud or jello works.

If you were wondering if the world was going to end soon, this is an indication. Wrestling should not only be an Olympic sport, it should be mandatory in all phys Ed classes. Great sport, teaches a ton of lessons.
Golf doesn't need the Olympics but the Olympics may need golf to se TV ads.
Are they going to have amateurs or is this another excuse to have pros compete in amateur events?

That may be part of it, though one article I read suggested that there was plenty of behind-the-scenes chicanery going on with all the sports under consideration to be dropped, and it may just be that wrestling advocates were the least adept.
I would have eliminated modern pentathlon myself, but their lobbyist had the surname Samaranch, offspring of a former IOC chairman. Each one of these sports has its own international federation, by the way, I wonder who pays for all that upkeep? (that was sarcasm, the bribery and related seedy dealings in international sports overall..)
Wrestling's biggest supporters are Russian and the various 'Stans, (outside the US), and so it lacks the political clout of some of the other, more niche sports.
My point would be that wrestling should be automatically grandfathered in as one of the only original, continuously-contested sports. It takes an amazing combination of athleticism, stamina, quickness, strength, agility, and mental discipline to succeed at the highest levels.

I started this thread because I felt replacing wrestling, which has been part of the Olympics for an eternity, was just plain ridiculous. But please do not take away my Rhythmic Gymnastics. I fully agree it does not belong but I can look at those girls all day long!! Maybe just keep it as a demonstration sport.

Heard on NPR that the 15 or 19 or however many voting members represented countries with a total of 3 bronze medals and one silver medal in wrestling. Meanwhile, modern pentathlon stays in because it has Samaranch advocating it.
Trampoline and rythmic gymnastics I can stomach since they're simply part of gymnastics, the same way synchronized swimming and water polo are grouped with actual swimming under the aquatics banner and all the cycling events, including bmx, are under one banner. Won't watch 'em, but that's how they're grouped. Frankly, if they were gonna cut something other than modern pentathlon, soccer might not've been a bad place to start. It's a glorified under 23 tournament.

Already insane, UAA making it worse
The Men's Tournament is, the Women's tournament is full international however.
The reason why the Men's Tournament is not full international is because FIFA does not want the Olympic tournament competing with the World Cup. The reason why soccer is still around is because everyone outside of Europe wants it, especially South America.
