2020 Olympics-Wrestling Out and Rugbyand Golf In

Re: 2020 Olympics-Wrestling Out and Rugbyand Golf In

You gotta figure this made someone at IOC very rich.
Yet the stupidest activity in the Olympic history, Rhythmic Gymnastics, remains?

Hell, this process is probably just around to wring money of groups... want wrestling back... pay up... don't want to get kicked out... pay up. Its just another opportunity for a shakedown.

Re: 2020 Olympics-Wrestling Out and Rugbyand Golf In

I can't believe they will drop wrestling. What will all the 'stans compete in now?

Swapping golf for wrestling is a shame... Removing wrestling is bad enough... I'm going to guess they didn't pay enough bribe money.

Seriously though, how do you remove a core sport to the Olympic movement that is done in hundreds of countries. Very pathetic.
I was obviously not in the room [rolleyes] but wrestling has some strikes against it. My $.02:

First, is they are not gender-equal. In the world of the IOC, that's a top priority, and the wrestling governing bodies have really dragged their feet on this. All things equal, gender-equal sports get to stay on the programme.

Second, wrestling has a long checkered history of performance enhancing drugs. That goes for umpteen other sports, too, but on the inside if the sport is seen as dragging their feet on doping, it can be a death knell at the IOC.

Third, wrestling doesn't add to the TV contract, to the revenue picture. (On the other hand, golf does.)

Personally, I think this is a message-sending moment from the IOC to the world governing bodies of wrestling. In my opinion, it stands head and shoulders above the 7 other sports being considered, AND there are some really sound reasons to think it will be added back in later this year:

If Istanbul gets the 2020 games, you really can't NOT have wrestling, one of a handful of medal opportunities for the home country.

Expanding the Olympic movement in Asia is a big IOC priority, and wrestling is rapidly becoming dominated by the Asians.

My money is on a inclusion in 9 months, (probably with conditions that haven't been made public).

{cough cough}Cycling {cough cough}
And they're wrestlers, dragging their knuckles.

Karelin vs. Gardner in 2000 in Sidney.

The announcers are not in English, Japanese or Korean perhaps, but you still don't need to understand them to appreciate the match, and the shock that they're in with the win for the big old American Farmboy over the big bad unbeateable Russian Bear who hadn't lost in 13 years, and wasn't known for surrendering points often as well.

How many countries actually compete in golf? Perhaps I'm just being ignorant, but the leader boards from tournaments are always filled with USA, GBR, Ireland, South Africa, South Korea, Japan, and then one or two guys from oddball countries like Spain or Fiji. It's gonna be about an eight nation tournament, with what seems like little qualification.

Countries that have won a major in the last 20 years: USA, South Africa, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Argentina, Germany, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Fiji, Scotland, Spain, England, Zimbabwe

Countries with wins in 2012 US PGA Tour: USA, Northern Ireland, England, Sweden, Australia, South Africa, Spain

Top 8 2012 Masters: USA, South Africa, Sweden, England, Ireland, Australia
Top 10 2012 US Open: USA, Northern Ireland, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, England
Top 9 2012 Open Champsionship: South Africa, Australia, USA, England, Northern Ireland, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Fiji
Top 10 2012 PGA Championship: Northern Ireland, Sweden, South Africa, Australia, USA, Fiji, Wales, Ireland, England

If you look at the winners on the European Tour in 2012, you can add these countries to those above: France, Austria, Italy, Portugal, Thailand, India

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a sport that had winners of big-time tournaments from that many countries in the last year.

Yeah, Im not worried about golf being dominated by a small set of countires. For that look at table tennis. China has wond 24 of 28 possible gold medals at the olympics and 47 of 88 total medals if I recall correctly.

I for one am ecstatic that rugby will be in the Olympics. Went to the USA 7s in Vegas in 2012. One of the best sports experiences of my life.

Frankly, if they were gonna cut something other than modern pentathlon, soccer might not've been a bad place to start. It's a glorified under 23 tournament.
Nooooo, don't take my soccer away! I have a hard enough time finding things I actually enjoy watching during the Olympics as it is! (Yes, you're right about it being an U23 tournament, but that doesn't mean it's not entertaining.)

You're right. The fact that it is soccer means that it's not entertaining.
