2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

Hockey East results coming in now...

Hockey East Quarterfinals

Providence @ Boston College - Game 1:
The Eagles and Friars skated to a classic tonight in Boston (well, sort of). BC took an early lead midway through the first period on a powerplay tally by Senior blue line Ben Finkelstein. PC responded towards the end of the opening frame, as Jack Dugan found Tyce Thompson in the slot, who roofed a wrister just past Spencer Knight's blocker to knot the score a 1-1 after twenty minutes. The Friars took the lead early in the second, as Dugan notched another assist, this time lifting a beautiful cross ice pass to Michael Callahan, who ripped a one-timer from the point that found the back of the net. The Eagles responded quickly, tying the game just over two minutes later when Matt Boldy found the net from the near circle. While the game remained tied for the rest of the second and most of the third, both sides had numerous opportunities to break the deadlock. However, it would be BC Junior Logan Hutsko that would break the tie with just over three minutes to go in the third. BC would add an empty netter in the waning seconds, and BC escaped with a 4-2 victory to claim Game 1 of this series.

Connecticut @ Maine - Game 1:
Sometimes, it just does not matter what you do on offense...the opposing goalie is simply up to the task. That was the story tonight from Alfond, as Maine Netminder Jeremy Swayman stunned the visiting Huskies time after time. The first stanza belonged to Swayman, who stopped all 15 of Connecticut's shots on goal, including a glorious save on a breakaway attempt by UCONN's Carter Turnbull. Maine broke the 0-0 stalemate early in the second, when Mitchell Fossier squeezed a wrister through the five hole of Connecticut goalie Tomas Vomacka. That would be all Swayman would need. Maine added an insurance goal midway through the third period when JD Greenway's wrister from the blueline bounced off UCONN Defensemen Jake Flynn and on to the stick of Patrick Shea, who wasted little time burying the puck to give the Black Bears a 2-0 lead. Swayman would stop all 31 shots from UCONN on the evening, en route to giving Maine a 2-0 victory and a 1-0 lead in this Quarterfinal series.

Northeastern @ Massachusetts - Game 1:
The visiting Huskies discovered why the hype surrounding the Minutemen's John Leonard is real. Leonard dominated the evening, scoring the game's first goal in the final minute of the first period to give UMASS a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes of play. Leonard then assisted on Zac Jones' powerplay tally midway through the second period, which gave the Minutemen a 2-0 advantage. Northeastern got back within a goal late in the second, when Matt Filipe's wrister snuck past Junior Netminder Matt Murray. That would be as close as Northeastern would get this evening. Leonard notched another goal early in the third to regain Massachusetts' two-goal lead, and assisted on the Minutemen's fourth goal midway through the final frame. Murray stoned the Huskies the rest of the way, and Massachusetts delivered a 4-1 victory for the home crowd.

Boston University @ Massachusetts Lowell - Game 1:
The Riverhawks and the Terriers skated to a scoreless opening frame tonight at the Tsongas Center. It looked like the score was going to remain scoreless going into the final twenty, until BU's Jake Wise slapped home a one-timer from the far circle on a beautiful feed from Trevor Zegras with just under 30 seconds left in the middle stanza. BU would add to that lead early in the third period, when Zegras potted his own goal, after capturing a loose puck behind the net and executing a perfect wraparound that slid underneath a sliding Tyler Wall. Lowell rebounded from the two-goal deficit, scoring twice in a span of 90 seconds midway through the third period, on goals by Matt Brown and Chase Blackmun. The game remained 2-2 through the rest of regulation. Overtime started with a bang, as Lowell Freshman Zach Kaiser was called for a five-minute checking from behind major. BU was unable to score with the man advantage, giving Northeastern a boost. The Huskies had several chances in the following minutes, but were continually denied by Senior Netminder Sam Tucker. Finally, as the first overtime trickled to an end, Patrick Curry decided that a second overtime was unnecessary. On a beautiful play, Curry won a puck-battle in the far corner, skated to the bottom of the far circle, and sniped a wrister in the top corner to give BU the 3-2 victory, and a 1-0 series lead.

Great start!

The western results are coming in now...

WCHA Seminfinals

Michigan Tech @ Minnesota State - Game 1:
Friday night in Mankato saw Michigan Tech and Minnesota State square off for who would take a 1-0 lead in this best-of-three Semifinal matchup. The Mavericks skated to an early lead behind goals from Marc Michaelis and Nathan Smith, which saw Mankato take a 2-0 lead by the midpoint of the first period. Tech pushed back, and answered just before the horn sounded in the first when Logan Pietila put the Huskies on the scoreboard. Neither team found the back of the net in the second, but Minnesota State dominated the third period. Michaelis tallied his second goal of the night early in the final stanza, and Jared Spooner scored his 10th of the season to give MSU a 4-1 lead. Tech had two powerplay opportunities midway through the third, but it was Michaelis notching the hat trick shorthanded to give the Mavericks a 5-1 lead. A meaningless tally from Reggie Lutz gave MSU a 6-1 advantage, which proved to be the final score. Minnesota State takes a 1-0 lead in the series.

Bowling Green @ Bemidji State - Game 1:
A defensive struggle was the best way to characterize this clash between the Bowling Green Falcons and the Bemidji State Beavers. Falcon netminder Eric Dop stopped all 12 BSU shots in the opening frame, while BSU goalie Zach Driscoll swatted away each of Bowling Green's 9 attempts on net. Dop and Driscoll matched their first period shutouts in the middle stanza, with Dop stopping 9 BSU SOGs, and Driscoll stoning the Falcon's 7 shots. Finally, Charlie Combs put the Beavers in the lead early in the third on a wrister from the slot that found the twine. Tyler Kirkup notched Bemidji's second goal just a few minutes later, and that would be all BSU would need on this night. Driscoll completed the shutout by stopping all of Bowling Green's 12 shots on goal in the third, and Bemidji finds itself just one win away from the WCHA Final.

NCHC Quarterfinals

St. Cloud State @ Western Michigan - Game 1:
The Lawson Lunatics had plenty to cheer about in game 1 of this NCHC Quarterfinal clash, as the Broncos stormed SCSU in the first period, scoring three goals, two by Dawson DiPietro and one by Rhett Kingston, en route to a 3-0 lead after twenty minutes. Cam Lee blasted a slapshot from the point to give WMU a four-goal lead early in the second, but the Huskies would not collapse. SCSU Junior Forward Easton Brodzinksi scored midway through the second to pull SCSU bck within three, and the Huskies took advantage of a powerplay opportunity before the end of the second period when Nolan Walker redirected a shot from the point past Brandon Bussi to get SCSU within two. The Huskies continued their comeback early in the third, as Jack Ahcan's wrister weaved its way through traffic to find the back of the net and get SCSU within a goal. SCSU peppered Bussi throughout the third, but were unable to find the elusive fourth goal. When the final horn sounded, the scoreboard read Western Michigan 4 - 3 St. Cloud State, and the Broncos take a 1-0 series lead.

Miami @ Minnesota Duluth - Game 1:
While Minnesota Duluth entered the game as the prohibitive favorite, it was Miami that struck early. John Sladic scored two minutes into the game, and Derek Daschke blasted a slapper on the powerplay past Duluth netminder Hunter Shepard to give Miami a 2-0 lead early in the opening frame. Minnesota Duluth pushed back late in the first, scoring on Kobe Roth's wrister with just over a minute left in the first twenty to cut Miami's lead to 2-1. The second period was kinder to the Bulldogs. Miami committed three consecutive penalties midway through the period, and Duluth took advantage twice, once on a snipe by Quinn Olson, and the Bulldogs took the lead on Noah Cates wrister that beat Miami goalie Ryan Larkin. Duluth would not enter the final frame with the lead though, as Miami's Monte Graham lit the lamp with just seconds left in the second period to tie the game at 3 apiece. Minnesota Duluth would take control in the third. Cole Koepke scored early to give Duluth the lead, and Kobe Roth added a second goal to give UMD a 5-3 advantage. Scott Perunovich added a powerplay tally with just under 8 to play, and an empty netter by Jackson Cates sealed the deal, as Duluth walked away with a 7-3 win, and a 1-0 lead in the series.

Colorado College @ North Dakota - Game 1:
The Penrose Cup champions flexed their muscle in Grand Forks this evening, dominating Colorado College. UND Netminder Peter Thome stopped all 18 shots he saw, and Hobey Baker contender Jordan Kawaguchi piled up two goals and two assists, as North Dakota skated to a 7-0 shutout of the Tigers. Kawaguchi started the scoring on the first shift of the game, and Cole Smith added another goal on the second shift, as North Dakota stormed out to a 2-0 lead. Grant Mismash added another, as the Hawks skated to a 3-0 lead. Kawaguchi scored another in the second, and assisted on Colin Adams' goal late in the second, which gave UND a 5-0 advantage. Shane Pinto netted his first goal of the series, and Mark Senden added the final tally, as North Dakota takes a 1-0 lead in the series.

Nebraska Omaha @ Denver - Game 1:
The Pioneers hosted the Mavericks in the final game of the evening. DU and UNO skated to a 0-0 draw in the first period, but Denver found the back of the net early in the second on a blistering wrister from Liam Finley. Finley nearly added a second a few minutes later, but was stoned by surprise starter Austin Roden. That appeared to give the Mavericks some momentum, as UNO scored the next two goals, one from Kevin Conley, and one from Joey Abate, to give Omaha a 2-1 lead after forty minutes of action. UNO extended its lead early in the third on Conley's second goal of the night, and Roden stopped the last 14 shots he saw. An empty netter in the final seconds by Zach Jordan set the final score at 4-1 Omaha, which takes a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-three series.

Good thing Jared Spooner quickly recovered from his injury for Minnesota State. Previously, he was announced as being done for the season.

On to tomorrow night. The battle of the 2 schools bands was the best ever.

Re: 2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

Air Force @ RIT - Game 1:
A goaltenders dual broke out in upstate New York this evening, as the Tigers and Falcons were unable to light the lamp for nearly 45 minutes. RIT Junior Netminder Logan Drackett and Air Force Sophomore Goalie Alex Schilling kept the skaters off the boards in the first two periods, despite a bevy of shots on goal. Through the first two stanzas, RIT launched 23 shots on goal, while Air Force lobbed 20 on Drackett. Finally, just over four minutes into the final frame, RIT forward Kobe Walker's wrister snuck past Schilling to put the Tigers up 1-0. Air Force stormed back and tallied a powerplay goal just three minutes later on Brandon Koch's laser from the point. The two squads battled over the final minutes of regulation, and with just over two minutes to play, Falcon Brady Tomlak ripped a one-timer from the near circle off the crossbar, which ricocheted to Trevor Stone, who buried the puck into the back of the net to give Air Force a 2-1 advantage. The Tigers swarmed the net in the final 120 seconds, but were unable to notch the equalizer. Air Force takes Game 1 of this series 2-1!

This is depressingly plausible.

B1G Tournament:
Minnesota @ Penn State

Re: 2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

Results coming in from the B1G Tournament this afternoon...

B1G Semifinals

Minnesota @ Penn State:
The first B1G Semifinal saw the Golden Gophers skate with the Nittany Lions in a barn-burner in Happy Valley. Minnesota's netminder Jack LaFontaine stood on his head in the opening twenty minutes, stopping all 14 Penn State shots on goal. The Gophers scored the game's first goal with just over thirty seconds left in the first period, as Sammy Walker found the back of the net. Penn State finally solved LaFontaine early in the second on the powerplay, as Nikita Pavlychev grabbed a rebound on the side of the crease and slammed it home to knot the game at 1. The Nittany Lions took their first lead of the game midway through the second when Evan Barratt took advantage of a sloppy pass in the neutral zone to skate in all alone. Barratt ripped a forehand past LaFontaine's outstretched glove to give PSU the 2-1 lead. Penn State took a 3-1 lead a few minutes later, when Cole Hults blasted a slapshot from the blue line that found its way into the net. The Gophers responded just seconds into the third period, when Walker found a streaking Tyler Nanne, whose slapper from the far circle went bar down to put the Gophers back within one. Minnesota then had consecutive powerplays midway through the third, but Nittany Lion goaltender Peyton Jones stood tall, stopping all six shots faced in that stretch. Jones continued to pick up the puck well down the stretch, and while the Gophers staged a flurry of attack in the waning minutes, Jones was able to keep them off the scoreboard, giving Penn State a 3-2 victory to advance to the B1G Championship next weekend.

Re: 2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

And from the ECAC...

ECAC Quarterfinals

Princeton @ Cornell - Game 2:
The Big Red looked to put away the Tigers in game 2 of their quarterfinal series in the ECAC. Cornell got off to a great start, as Tristan Mullin put the Big Red in the lead on his snipe midway through the first period. Mullin then added a second goal on the powerplay towards the end of the period, and after twenty minutes, Cornell held a 2-0 advantage. Princeton got one goal back early in the second period, when Liam Grande's one-timer from the near circle deflected off Travis Mitchell and past Matthew Galajda's blocker. The score remained 2-1 entering the third. Galajda came up big early in the final stanza when Luke Keenan found himself all alone in the slot. While Keenan's wrister looked destined for the top shelf, Galajda flashed his glove to keep the Big Red in the lead. Galajda was unable to stop Keenan's next opportunity midway through the period, as Keenan's one-time from the far circle beat Galajda stick-side to knot the game at 2. After sixty minutes of play, the teams remained all-square, but Cornell struck early in overtime when Morgan Barron won a puck-battle in the near corner, dished the puck out to Yanni Kaldis, who lined up a slapper from the point, which beat Jeremie Forget, and gave Cornel the 3-2 victory, and a 2-0 series win.

Colgate @ Clarkson - Game 2:
The Golden Knights and the Red Raiders squared off in game 2 of their quarterfinal series today. It was a goaltender dual. Clarkson's Frank Marotte and Colgate's Mitch Benson stopped each of the shots they faced in the first two periods, as the team's entered the third period knotted at 0-0. It would be Clarkson's Josh Dunne would would continue his hot streak early in the third period, scoring on a one-timer from the slot that pushed the Golden Knights into the lead. Colgate would quickly respond on the next shift, when Bobby McMann found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Marotte and Benson quickly got back to their puck-stopping ways after the back-to-back goals, and after sixty minutes of play, the teams were even at 1-1. In overtime, both sides had opportunities, Clarkson had a powerplay midway through the extra period, and Colgate's Griffin Lunn hit the post with just under 90 seconds left in the first overtime, but after an extra 20, the game remained at 1-1. Finally, just over three minutes into the second overtime, Clarkson's Jack Jacome steered in a rebound to give the Golden Knights a 2-1 double overtime victory, and a 2-0 series victory.

Yale @ Quinnipiac - Game 2:
The Battle of Connecticut resumed today, as Yale looked to stave off elimination, while Quinnipiac looked to advance to the ECAC Semifinals. The Bulldogs got off to a good start when Curtis Hall notched the game's first goal just over three minutes in. Yale added a second tally midway through the period when Dante Palecco scored a powerplay goal to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Quinnipiac responded just before the end of the first period, as Alex Whelan slotted a wrister into the top shelf to get the Bobcats within a goal after twenty minutes. Quinnipiac continued their momentum in the second period, tying the game midway through on Nick Jermain's tally. Jermain found the back of the net again with just over two minutes to play in the second, which gave QU a 3-2 advantage. With its season on the line, Yale came out strong in the third period. The Bulldogs knotted things up at 3-3 just over five minutes into the third on Luke Stevens' goal, and with just over eight left to play, Yale's Tyler Welsh scored to put the Bulldogs in the lead. Quinnipiac would not relent, and with just over 75 seconds to play, the Bobcats' Ethan de Jong tickled the twine to even the score at 4-4. It appeared overtime was inevitable; however, with just second left, Yale's Palecco scored his second of the game to give the Bulldogs a 5-4 advantage, which proved to be the final score. The Battle of Connecticut will wage on tomorrow in Game 3 of this series.

Harvard @ RPI - Game 2:
The Crimson and the Engineers met on the ice today in game 2 of this series. RPI got an early jump in this one, as Mike Gornall scored from the slot. Harvard answered midway through the first period on Jack Drury's goal, knotting the score at 1-1. The Crimson took their first lead of the game in the waning minutes of the first stanza, when Drury potted his second goal. RPI answered midway through the second period, when Patrick Polino's slapper deflected off a Harvard defensemen in front of the net and beat goalie Mitchell Gibson. The Engineers then regained the lead early in the third period as Will Reilly scored on the powerplay. Reilly nearly gave RPI a two-goal lead when his slapshot from the point rang off the crossbar. Ultimately, it would not have been needed, as RPI's Owen Savory kept the Crimson off the scoreboard the way, and RPI advanced to the ECAC Semifinals with a 3-2 victory.

Re: 2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

And some additional results from out east coming in...

Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinals

Bentley @ AIC - Game 2:
With their season on the line, the Falcons skated with the Yellow Jackets in game 2 of their quarterfinal series. Bentley Senior Forward Jonathan Desbiens found the back of the net first to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. AIC quickly responded, when Tobias Fladeby notched the Yellow Jackets' first tally to knot the score at 1-1. The game remained 1-1 throughout the rest of the first period, and for most of the second period. However, with just over two minutes to play in the second, AIC took the lead on a powerplay goal by Hugo Reinhardt. The score remained 2-1 when the buzzer sounded ending the second period. Bentley had an enormous opportunity early in the third when Brennan Kapcheck was called for a five-minute major for contact to the head. However, AIC goaltender Stefano Durante held firm, and moments after the Yellow Jackets killed off the major penalty, Elijah Barriga potted a goal to give AIC a 3-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets held Bentley off the scoreboard the rest of the way, and when the final horn sounded, AIC took the game 3-1, and the series 2-0.

Robert Morris @ Sacred Heart - Game :
Robert Morris faced elimination, needing to score a win in game 2 of their series with Sacred Heart to continue their season. It did not begin well. The Pioneers went on an early powerplay and Austin Magera scored a goal on a wrister from the bottom of the near circle. Sacred Heart continued its early onslaught, earning another powerplay midway through the opening stanza, and again converting, this time thanks to a goal from Austin McIlmurray to give SHU a 2-0 lead. However, the Colonials would not relent. late in the first period, Bobby Mo's Jacob Coleman found the back of the net to get RMU within a goal. Coleman scored his second of the night early in the second period to tie the game at 2 apiece. Midway through the second period, Robert Morris tallied its third marker of the game, on a slapper from Alex Robert. The game remained 3-2 throughout the rest of the second period, but early in the third, the Colonials scored their fourth straight goal, this time from Nick Prkusic, which gave RMU a 4-2 advantage. Sacred Heart piled on the pressure throughout the rest of the third, but Justin Kapelmaster held firm. As the clock ticked down, SHU pulled their goalie, but it would be Robert Morris' Justin Addamo who found the empty net to give Robert Morris a 5-2 lead, which would prove to be the final score. Get ready folks for a Game 3 in this series!

Air Force @ RIT - Game 2:
After a devastating loss last night, RIT needed to get the win on its home ice in order to extend its season. While the Tigers had difficulty solving Alex Schilling on Friday night, they would not have the same problem on this day. Shawn Cameron got the Tigers on the board about five minutes into the game, and Caleb Moretz followed shortly thereafter to give RIT a 2-0 early advantage. Air Force got their first tally with about three minutes left in the first to get back within one when Jake Levin found the back of the net on a shot from the point. It looked like 2-1 would be the score after twenty minutes, but in the final seconds of the period, Cameron found Adam Brubacher in the slot, who roofed a wrister past Schilling to give the Tigers a 3-1 advantage after the first period. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second period, but RIT padded their lead early in the third when Alden Dupuis' wrister snuck through Schilling's five hole to give the Tigers a three-goal advantage. That would be all RIT would need in this one, as Logan Drackett held the Falcons off the scoreboard. When the clock reached all zeroes, it was the Tigers taking game 2, 4-1, and tying the series at 1 apiece.

Niagara @ Army - Game 2:
Army needed only a victory to both end Niagara's season and advance to the Atlantic Hockey Semifinals for the first time since 2017. The Black Knights came out strong, launching 15 shots on the Purple Eagles' Brian Wilson, who turned each attempt away. Niagara was unable to capitalize on their goalie's strong effort in the first twenty, and after the first period the game remained 0-0. Niagara finally broke the stalemate midway through the second, when Brandon Stanley found the back of the net to give the Purple Eagles a 1-0 lead. Army quickly responded, when Colin Bilek converted a powerplay chance to knot the score at 1-1. The game remained tied going into the third period, but the Black Knights would dominate the final stanza. Army scored three times in the first eight minutes of the period, including goals from Michael Wilson, Eric Butte, and Dominic Franco to give Army a 4-1 advantage. Niagara pulled within two goals with about five minutes to play, as Ben Sokay scored on a breakaway. The Purple Eagles were unable to sneak any closer, and Army held on for the 4-2 victory, and the 2-0 series victory to advance to the Atlantic Hockey Semifinals.

On to Fake Placid!
