2020 Democratic Challengers

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers

Not sure about Cuomo's prospects but this is a nothing story that happens in like every other state in the country. IMHO the floodgates opened with the courts overturned former VA Gov McDonnell's conviction even though he was directly steering state business to the company of a guy who was directly funding he and his wife's lavish lifestyle.

I don't see Cuomo as a serious national contender.

Couldn't tell you at this point but if we eliminated all candidates who appointed people to govt positions after they received a campaign donation from them there wouldn't be 5 politicians left to run for higher office!

But making contributions AFTER you got the job speaks of (a) an installment plan or (b) a thank you gift.

I'd rather not go there. Albany is a den of vipers and more corrupt than Baton Rouge. Both parties have bodies stacked five deep. Leave it be.

It speaks of "we're all in bed with each other" and if you didn't realize that already you've lived one fuk of a sheltered life. :D

Kep, I'm not discounting anybody at this point. If Cuomo manages to inspire the base and get people to turn out, then by all means he can be the nominee and I'll happily support him. Way too early to start enforcing litmus tests until we actually see people campaigning.

A preference is not a litmus test. The Dems already have a crippling image problem being seen as a gang of out of touch, incestuous, dynastic cronies. Governor My Daddy Spoke Well hardly helps dispel that. I'd rather run a meatball like Oprah if it came to that. At least we'd get the braindead reflexive "outsider" voter.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers

I like the tweets. Bernie is correct on the economics but he can be terribly short-sighted on Grand Strategy, and he steps in it again and again. The tweets show perfectly how vulnerable that makes the ideas.

Rover is actually a perfect exemplar of the forces within the Democratic party which liberals need to either co-opt or circumvent to recapture the party. His heart is clearly in the right place but he has drunk deep of the Clinton-Obama waters. His ambition is to contain Republican fascism and limit their damage. His solution is one word: Electability. Everything else can wait.

If his solution produced the liberal equivalent of Trump? Eff that noise.

Rover is still butt hurt over being emasculated on Election Day, or maybe his diaper is full of the Pats' defense, but at the end of the day we should trundle Katy Perry out there if her boobs win us the chair. We can do what the GOP did with Dubya: elect a pretty gibbering idiot and then fill its head with whatever policy we want.

Christ, Dump proves every day that the government can function with even a senile orangutan President.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers

Wrong. Try being someone on any margin right now.

Oh, I didn't say government was functioning for the benefit of our people. Just that the machine is creaking along in the service of its agenda. In this instance, an agenda of neglect, pillage, and rapine.

The point is we can put a braindead guy or girl with nice hair in the chair and run the government from Congressional staff and the executive department bureaucrats just like the GOP did with Reagan. We get into trouble with elections because we insist on nominating intelligent candidates. But the monkeys don't like intelligent candidates. Smart people remind dumb people, just by existing, of how stupid they are. So we need candidates nice and non-threatening and hurr-durr happy. Then we can have any policies we want. But we're not going to find them among the knit-brow worriers -- in a word, thinkers -- in academia. We need to look in the industries that manufacture desire and persuasion: marketing, advertising, sales, acting, media, televangelism... we need solid B high school kids. As a perk they tend to be better looking because pretty people don't need to develop thinking skills to succeed.

Voters don't care about issues. They care about being made to feel special. This is just like selling a car.

This is a very good post all around.

I may be cynical, but most people don't care about their government as long as their rice bowl is full. Take that away and out come the pitchforks and torches.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers

Rover..... or maybe his diaper is full of the Pats' defense.

Despite the increasing lunacy of your rantings, this was actually a good one! Well done. :D

But your solution makes no sense. You want to trot out pretty boys and Katy Perry and all that to win elections, but the problem you're missing is that these people would then be as uncontrollable as they are for the Republicans. Hence the increasing inability for them to get anything done beyond "tax cuts for the rich" and even that was a heavy lift. Do we need a left version of Roy Moore, Michelle Bachmann, Sarah Palin or Ted Cruz serving our interests in Congress? Fuk no. I'm starting to think Kep that everything you do and support politically has one end game that you're trying to achieve which is losing. You like to lose, basically and even when you win (Obama) you chalk that up by rationalizing it as not really a win because Obama was really a conservaDem. I guess losing comforts you somehow? Would explain why you embrace crackpot proposals that have as much chance of winning as Cornell does of winning another national championship. :D
