2020 Democratic Challengers: Boogaloo

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Boogaloo

Again, valid perspective. But not IMO optimal.

We're both trying to get a D in the white house. I believe youre advocating an approach that is to be positive about each candidate...then when one becomes the nominee, they've got an extra tailwind because of strictly positive commentary.

Here's the issue with that. Sometimes the top candidate strengthens or weakens the image of the whole party. Trump is doing that with the GOP - which got whitewashed. I would argue that Warren if left to her own devices could hurt the whole Dem prospects including her own. Secondly, some candidates are unelectable Ds (IMO again inflammatory candidates or extreme ones). So its better to stop them before they win the nomination and doom us to 4 more years of Trump. The only way to do this is to ensure that folks understand both the upsides of some candidates and the downsides of others.

I don't think any D on this site appears so ingrained in their dislike of D candidates to flip against them in 2020.

I think we can trust the nomination process to shed inflammatory and extreme candidates on the Democratic side. Even among the base we are still a reality-based community.

This cycle in particular seems to be wide open. The only Democrat with potentially dominant clout in the DNC is Obama and he has been very good about not signalling a preference. If Warren is so stodgy or professorial she's unable to build an inspiring movement then her candidacy will fail. If her candidacy does not fail then she will have been able to build an inspiring movement. I don't see a need to protect Democrats from themselves. We are extremely diverse and from that diversity will arise someone acceptable to a huge part of the electorate. We are not the party who should be worried about withdrawing into a bubble cut off from the rest of America. Hell, we are America.

I like O'Rourke, Booker, and Gillibrand because they probably won't raise my taxes just to give Associate's degrees to young potheads.

You're right Kep, this works! ;)

I was gonna say... I'm pretty sure Beto will raise your taxes to give potheads an associate's degree. In fact I'm depending on it!

This holds until it doesn't...and then we get a Republican administration.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, is reaching out to Wall Street executives to gauge potential support if she were to run for president in 2020, CNBC has learned.

...way to read the room.

"If you can't take their money, drink their liquor, f-ck their women and still vote against them you don't belong in this town."

I am all for the Dems taking every dollar they can off the donor class and then telling them to f-ck off. They've always said they're just buying access. Fine. I've listened to what you've said and my offer is this. Nothing.

Great Idea. It has worked so well in the past too.

I say solicit funds from wall street, minorities or senior citizens.Anyone who wants to defeat Trump is welcome to join the effort in my book. Kicking people out of the tent is just as smart as the GOP kicking people out of their tent. Its not.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Boogaloo

The less you recognize who the voters are, the less your chance of getting them to support you.

Hillary received 3mm more votes despite running an awful campaign on several fronts that inspired a lot of D voters to stay home, while the Dems swept through the House in November. I think they're paying attention just fine.

I agree with this. If somebody on Wall St truly believes in financial reform why would you exclude them from the party? I'm not privy to all of Warren Buffett's investment holdings for example, but the guy has been stellar in destroying GOP arguments that the wealth need more and more tax cuts by using himself as an example. If he's got a few bucks invested in the oil industry or with some Wall St banks, it is really helpful to tell him to get lost?

Yet the other 2/3rd are R :)

And winning CA by 48 cagilluon votes skews that US majority which means nothing ;)

"If you can't take their money, drink their whiskey, fck their women, and STILL vote against them, then you don't belong in Washington."

Where there are jobs, schools? Weird.

It's almost as if the geographic sprawl of dirt and shrubs in underpopulated states should not matter as much as flesh and blood human beings.

Abolish the Senate, apportion the House in units of the smallest state's population, rounding down. CA = 70 * WY
