2018-19 Penn State Nittany Lions

Re: 2018-19 Penn State Nittany Lions

It's one of those series that has to be played, and isn't much more exciting than that.
At least both teams will be in the postseason, so it is a tuneup for that. IMO, it is worse when you have two teams playing and neither is going to make the league tourney.

I can imagine the sound of crickets in an arena with that scenario, for sure.

With four points up for grabs, I think the big CHA series this weekend is Syracuse at Robert Morris.
Mercyhurst in its series, with a sweep of RIT, can max out at 26 points. RIT is playing Penn State in the tournament, so they do whatever they do against Mercyhurst.
Syracuse, with a sweep of Robert Morris, can top out at 26 points, too.

However, Robert Morris, with one win, is at 27 points and wins the regular season title.

I don't think he would sit Brenneman, Penn State is results driven and .500 when going to meet with your boss is a lot better than sub .500. Of course who knows, the power play was switched after going 2/3 against Robert Morris and is now 1/26. Including Zippo on two 5/3. Heising did hit a post in game two though.

Funny thing, I read the UNH thread by mistake because it was
One above Penn State and the last seven posts could have been easily in Penn State's thread. Then, I had to check the UNH record and they are also two games under Five hundred.

Mediocrity evidently brings out the questions.

Meanwhile, it looks like an 8th grader verbally committed to Penn State.

Re: 2018-19 Penn State Nittany Lions

Wow, so Penn State has to travel to Missouri, likely gets home late Saturday or even on Sunday, then off to the tournament on Tuesday, since things are running one day ahead this year. Puts Penn State in a challenging spot imo.

It’s an interesting feature of the league that if you don’t finish top 2 you have to play 3 games in 3 days to win the tournament. I don’t mind rewarding the top two like that, “making the reg season mean something” but jamming the tournament in so tight, especially in a year when the league has as much parity as it’s ever had, it just seems like bad tournament planning.

I wonder what the cause of this is. I see the time of the final is TBD, because waiting to see if Canisius hosts an Atlantic playoff game. Was it like that last year? The Wed to Fri format, plus not even knowing the time of the final are strikes against this tourney for me.

I don't understand a Wednesday/Thursday/Friday tournament. I'd rather see the quarterfinals at the home arena of the higher seed in one weekend (two out of three series), then the following weekend have the semifinals and championship.

You're so right about the tight schedule. It would've been nice to wait one more week for the tournament, so everyone is closer to playing their best hockey.

Ok, just checked and apparently Canisius has 11th place locked up in Atlantic Hockey. Given that, I don’t see how they could be hosting a playoff game on March 8th so hopefully that maximizes time between CHA semis and final.

Penn State in 2016-2017

7-26-2 overall 4-14-1 CHA

In 2017-2018
10-15-11 and 6-7-7

In 2018-2019
11-13-8. And 5-9-4

RIT
In 2017-2018
4-28-3 and Cha 1-17

In 2018-2019
12-15-5 and 8-9-1

The amount of improvement by RIT is stunning.

Big drop off for Lindenwood. What happened to DeBruyn?

Jolene deBruyn was Lindenwood's senior goalie, but she's not on the roster anymore, and I have no idea what happened with her. She's on their stats until their November 24 game against Mankato, but she's also marked on their stats page as being an "inactive player".

Re: 2018-19 Penn State Nittany Lions

Quotes from Jeff Kampersal about this weekend at Lindenwood:

"We've been preparing this entire season for this weekend and for Buffalo. We'll treat this weekend like a playoff series...These next two games are important to us, regardless of them being irrelevant to the standings. If we can get to .500, I think that is a good goal and accomplishment."

"In all our games coming up, scoring that first goal is critically important. I think we'll try to press that as much as possible."

Re: 2018-19 Penn State Nittany Lions

One period at Lindenwood is in the books and the game is scoreless. Lindenwood leads the shots on goal by 8-4, and both teams are 0-2 on the power play.

Re: 2018-19 Penn State Nittany Lions

In the other two CHA matchups, Mercyhurst had no trouble with RIT, shutting them out 4-0.

After one period, Syracuse is down 2-0 at Robert Morris.

Re: 2018-19 Penn State Nittany Lions

After two periods, Penn State is up 1-0 on a goal from Katie McMillan. Lindenwood leads the shots on goal 15-13, and both teams are still 0-2 on the power play.

After two periods, Syracuse is currently down 4-0 at Robert Morris. Barring a Syracuse miracle on ice, Robert Morris will lock up the CHA regular season title tonight, with Mercyhurst needing only a tie tomorrow with RIT to lock up second place and the other CHA tournament first round bye.

(Of course, there's always the scrambled alternative, too - if Mercyhurst loses tomorrow and Syracuse wins, those two would end up tied for second place).

Re: 2018-19 Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State takes game one at Lindenwood by a score of 3-1. Even strength goals came from Katie McMillan and Brooke Madsen, and a power play goal from Katie Rankin. Lindenwood finished ahead in shots on goal by 23-19, and both teams finished 1-3 on the power play.

Robert Morris clinched their third straight CHA regular season title at home, and a first round tournament bye, shutting out Syracuse by a score of 5-0. That puts Mercyhurst up by two points on Syracuse after shutting out RIT today, with tomorrow's games deciding who gets the second bye to start the CHA tournament next week.
