2017 Pairwise Predictor

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

OK, I deserve pendantic when I am being a smart a.

Edit: although, now that I think of it it woyld be cheaper to bus BSU to Duluth than fly them to Madison so I will stick with the smarty pants answer.

No matter who wins, they're all going to Minneapolis.

Want to try again?

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

The Pairwise Predictor is updated with all of this weekend's results. Let me know if I have a result hard coded incorrectly (like an incorrect winner or someone winning in 2 when they should be in there as winning in 3).

You could have waited for the Bemidji-Minn game to go final...

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

So the things I think I know:

Wisconsin will be #1 overall.
Clarkson, St. Lawrence, and UMD are all in the tournament. All 3 can guarantee themselves a home game in the NCAA by winning their next game.
Minnesota is in the tournament, unless North Dakota wins the WCHA.
Minnesota will host a game if they win the WCHA, and will be on the road if they don't.

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

For BC to host, the Gophers losing helped, in that now Minnesota doesn't have to lose to UMD now, but in addition to BC winning Hockey East:

(1) SLU has to lose to Cornell,
(2) The Gophers can't win the WCHA, and
(3) BU has to beat NU in the semifinals.

There MAY be a stray scenario out there that gets BC to #4 without #3, but I haven't had time to dig into the results from yesterday yet.

There are a few ways for BC to get to the 4 seed with a NU win. Syracuse and Robert Morris playing each other for the CHA title would be a big help. UMD and/or Princeton winning their next game would also be helpful. In fact, if UMD wins the WCHA, BC could actually climb up to #3 in the rankings. Of course, if BC doesn't win Hockey East, there are actually quite a few ways for them to still be bounced from the tournament altogether.

Gotta think Cornell has more work to do than that to ensure they're at home in the first round of NCAAs? Getting a home game seems highly unlikely if not impossible for that team at this point. I'm guessing you meant Clarkson.

Whoops, yes, I meant Clarkson. I've fixed that. WI, Clarkson, St. Lawrence, UMD, MN, and BC are the only teams that have a chance of making the top 4 at this point.

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

Minnesota is in the tournament, unless North Dakota wins the WCHA.

This also requires an upset in the Hockey East (someone other than BC winning) or Cornell/Princeton winning the ECAC, unless it's BU that wins Hockey East, in which case that's an "and" rather than the emphasized "or".

Minnesota will host a game if they win the WCHA, and will be on the road if they don't.

It also looks like they host if they beat UMD, BU wins Hockey East, and St Lawrence loses to Cornell.

Correct, I didn't mean that if North Dakota wins that MN is out, rather, I mean that every case where MN is out would require ND to win the WCHA - and yes, even then a few other things would have to happen.

Ohh, I hadn't seen that - but there are a couple other factors in that one. SL has to lose to Cornell, Not only does BU have to win HE, but they have to beat BC to win it, AND Syracuse and Robert Morris have to play each other in the CHA final (it doesn't seem to matter who wins). If any other CHA school upsets either Syracuse or Robert Morris OR if BOTH Lindenwood and RIT win their first round games, MN would still end up outside of the top 4.

Isn't the Pairwise fun?

BC played 4 ranked teams all year, make it 6 if you count UMD who wasn't ranked at the time and were 2-1-3 against them (NU was 10th when they played them). There's no way they should be sniffing home ice in the ncaa's. UM went 1-1-2 against #1 and played against 10 ranked teams total (3-3-4). Common sense needs to trump math.

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

2-1-3
...
3-3-4

I do like that how if BC wins Hockey East and the Gophers don't even make the finals, then that's somehow additional evidence that the Gophers deserve home ice.

1-1-2 against #1......BC was crushed by UMD, the #3 team in the WCHA. And hey, they're the gophers, nuff said.

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

BC was crushed by UMD
Having actually watched these games, I don't agree. BC fell apart over a short stretch of the 2nd period. They lost, I'm not denying that, but to say they were "crushed" is not correct.

I mean, hell, BC outshot Duluth in both games. I realize that's not the be-all, end-all, but I thought it was an accurate depiction of game flow outside of that second period debacle.

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

Honestly, it isn't worth your time to even worry about anything said relating to the Gophers at this point in time. They are a mere shadow of their former selves. Any, and I do mean any, top ten team would likely beat Minnesota in a one and done. You should want a matchup with them in the quarterfinals, even if they are hosting.

If the Gophers are hosting, it means they just went through Duluth and Wisconsin to win the WCHA. I would not want to face that team.
