2017 Pairwise Predictor

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

Did some more playing with the predictor. A great tool Grant. Thanks. Wisconsin is a lock for the first seed in the NC$$ no matter what. I could find no combinations where Clarkson misses a NC$$ berth, the lowest I could get them finishing was 5th or 6th. They have a great shot at a top 4 finish even if they do not win the ECAC Championship or make the ECAC final (washes his mouth out with soap). There were a few scenarios where BC and Minny can miss the NC$$ Tourney. Lets see who else can find these out. ;)

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

Grant,

After the weekend is over, do you plan to publish an update with the weekend's results hard-coded in? I don't want to sound like I'm complaining but it takes a looonnngg time to load things up on my PC (maybe it's the knockoff shareware spreadsheet program I'm using), and an update would save much time. Thanks.

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

I can now find two basic scenarios that have both Minnesota and UMD hosting NCAA quarterfinals:

1) BU wins Hockey East; St Lawrence loses its ECAC semi; Minnesota wins tomorrow and beats UMD in its semi; Wisconsin wins its semi

2) St Lawrence loses its semi; Minnesota wins the WCHA

In both cases, the outcome of the ECAC final doesn't seem to matter, just whether St Lawrence is in it. In the second case, the outcomes in Hockey East don't matter for this question. I have assumed that the results of the CHA tourney don't matter; if that's not true, this gets more complicated.

That might be for the best; remember the Gophers for what they once were, not what they've become. :(

Grant has been updating the predictor with the results hardcoded in as the games have been completed. Great job Grant.

For BC to host, the Gophers losing helped, in that now Minnesota doesn't have to lose to UMD now, but in addition to BC winning Hockey East:

(1) SLU has to lose to Cornell,
(2) The Gophers can't win the WCHA, and
(3) BU has to beat NU in the semifinals.

There MAY be a stray scenario out there that gets BC to #4 without #3, but I haven't had time to dig into the results from yesterday yet.

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

Glad you guys like it so much!!

Generally, to avoid Wisconsin-vs-Minn/Duluth and East-vs-East in the NCAA semi-finals (which I would very much like to do, for a couple reasons) an upset or two in the ECAC tournament (particularly of St Lawrence) and/or a win by Duluth over Minn in the WCHA tournament would help a lot.

Yeah it can be done without much trouble. BC needs some combination of a few of these things to happen, in addition to SLU losing to Cornell and BC winning Hockey East:

(1) QU beats Princeton
(2) BU beats NU
(3) Syracuse/RMU advance to the CHA finals
(4) Duluth beats Minnesota

It looks like BC needs two of those to happen. SLU losing to Cornell is 100% required though.

Re: 2017 Pairwise Predictor

I found a way to break the committee:

<img src="http://i.imgur.com/B78YBmj.png" height="500">

6 Minnesota @ 1 Wisconsin
8 Syracuse @ 2 Clarkson
7 Cornell @ 3 Boston College
5 Duluth @ 4 St. Lawrence

One flight? I think they'd be more than happy with that. Nothing else really matters.

No, Wisconsin would play BSU.

OK, I deserve pendantic when I am being a smart a.

Edit: although, now that I think of it it woyld be cheaper to bus BSU to Duluth than fly them to Madison so I will stick with the smarty pants answer.
