Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

A Utica win over Hobart would make for an interesting Utica/Hobart comparison.

Utica would certainly win the H2H. Similar SOS, Utica wins the RNK by virtue of the final win, and Hobart still has the edge in WIN%. Could come down to COP?

Just for fun, here's how the KRACH would have it:

East:
1. Norwich
2. Oswego
3. Hamilton
4. Hobart
5. Endicott
6. Trinity
7. Williams
8. Utica

West:
1. Point
2. Adrian
3. St. Norbert
4. Eau Claire

I like this one better! (And, yes, I realize that choosing the field via any objective measure is a preposterous notion and could never happen in a million years... Thanks just the same, my brothers!)

Seeded

East
1. Norwich
2. Oswego
3. Endicott
4. Hobart
5. Hamilton
6. Utica
7. Plymouth

West
1. St Norbert
2. UWSP
3. Adrian
4. Augsburg
5. St Thomas

I still have a lot to learn about building the brackets, but I do know how to use the "distance calculator". :D

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

This looks like a seeding disaster. The only East/West distances that are less than 500 miles are Adrian/Oswego and Adrian/Hobart. (Adrian/Utica is 534 miles) This means that unless the NCAA allows first round flights, that all first round games will have to include the 7 eastern teams and Adrian, so that the four first round byes would go to SNC, UWSP, Augsburg, and STT. St. Thomas would go to SNC, Augsburg would go to UWSP in quarterfinal game, while Adrian would go to Hobart in a first round game. The NCAA would then root for Oswego to win their first round game or for Adrian to lose theirs, so that Adrian would not have to fly for a quarterfinal.

It will be interesting to see Webb's take on this.

When I saw three NESCAC teams, I chuckled, but looking at the D3 Inter-conference records, the NESCAC has the best winning % of any of the leagues!? The NESCAC has always had a good OOC record, but they've never been the best of all D3 leagues in this century.

From a statistical perspective, I'm not sure if this phenomenon is due to: a) the NESCAC is better top-to-bottom this year b) The leagues from which they select their OOC competition are weaker or c) the historical leaders in this category (NCHA, ECAC/W) are much worse this season. I'm sure there's a stat package which can allocate the weight of contribution for each cause ... right NUPROF?

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

Prof, try this, keep Adrian in the WEST.

Norwich Bye
Hamilton @ Hobart (winner to Norwich)
Utica @ Endicott
Plymouth @ Oswego

St Thomas @ UWSP (winner to Adrian)
Adrian Bye
Augsburg @ St Norbert

East Semi: Norwich/Hobart/Hamilton v Utica/Plymouth/Endicot/Oswego

West Semi: UWSP/St Thomas/Adrian v Augsburg/St Norbert

7-5 Split is challenging.

So your four byes are Norwich, Adrian, Augsburg, and St. Norbert. I guess that could actually work (although Oswego would yell). That is better than my scheme of giving the byes to 4 of the 5 western teams. It doesn't fit the suggested bracket, but it is closer than mine. The good news is that that after this weekend, this will probably all change, given upsets.

Nothing to worry about here. The MIAC is only getting one team in.

From an Oz fan's perspective, it's worth a grumble, but not a yell - at least the play-in and QF are a week apart now, and Oz could potentially host both games in this case... and avoid The Adrian Question. Frankly, Peddler's suggestion of a 4 team pod is the first I've seen yet this year, and is a concept that perhaps should not be chucked out the window now that the tourney holds 12 teams. It is convenient to zone in on 4 3-team pods with a bye in each.

Perhaps with an 8-4 field, a 4-team pod would still be possible, but in the east?

St Thomas @ UWSP; winner @ SNC (bye)

Adrian @ Oswego St (both byes)
Utica @ Hamilton; winner @ Norwich (bye)

Plymouth St @ Endicott/Trinity @ Hobart; winners at higher seed
Colors for respective Semis match-ups

Perhaps UWSP should be one to grumble in this case, but it would keep the Bulldogs to travel and play once, though regrettably back to Oz. Hobart could stay east in this case.

Quite right - but the speculation is so delicious beforehand!

It's no more challenging than any other east-west split is.

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

That it will.

Webb bracket is:

First Round

4W St. Thomas @ 2W UW-Stevens Point

4E Hobart @ 3W Adrian

8E Plymouth State @ 5E Hamilton

7E Trinity @ 6E Utica

Quarterfinals

4W St. Thomas/2W UW-Stevens Point @ 1W St. Norbert

8E Plymouth State/5E Hamilton @ 3E Endicott

4E Hobart/3W Adrian @ 2E Oswego State

7E Trinity/6E Utica @ 1E Norwich

Re: 2017 NCAA tournament selection thread

With regard to seeding, does an Adrian Harris Cup victory catapult them ahead of SNC in the West? Does a tournament victory count more than two conference victories?
