2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

There certainly isn't a need for standings tie-breakers or they would have changed the number of points being awarded.
????

They did change the points being awarded. Every game is now a 3 point game, instead of 2. You get 3 points in the standings for a regulation win now.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

Well some of you I guess like to watch ties.....to each his own.

I actually commend the WCHA for trying to do something to increase fan interest in their product. Especially student fan interest.

Lets face facts...this is a league that is on shaky ground.

1) Your current best program wants out and has publicly shown that......not good.
2) One of your other top teams would rather be in any other conference than this one and just has not stated it publicly......yet.
3) Top junior scorers have no interest in playing in your league because its viewed as a "clutch and grab" league that lets obstruction go and stifles scoring.
4) Two of your programs are facing death at any moment.
5) In a two week stretch last season 75% of the league games ended in ties.

Yeah lets keep doing what we have been doing......

I like hockey, the more hockey I get to watch the better. 3on3 has to be more entertaining than watching two teams park the bus for the last 3 minutes of OT because they don't want to lose their point they worked 62 minutes for. At least in 3on3 teams can just go for it, since they each are assured a point.

no, you get 3 points for anything the NCAA calls a win...including winning I the 5v5 OT.

You know i'm not so sure about this clutch and grab stuff. It seems we have a style of play that is associated with it and that style is similar to what Ferris plays, but also BGSU plays a very similar style yet they don't have the same reputation. I'm not a fan of that kind of hockey but it does get results.
Going around college hockey, in the NCHC we have quite a few teams that play the so called heavy game.. North Dakota... does, Denver does, WMU, more like Ferris, Miami does, ASU,... very defensive style of play, so it's not like no one but our league has it. In our league we have Ferris, UAH, NMU, LSSU, UAA,BGSU.
it's really half of college hockey, so I don't think the clutch and grab thing is deserved at all. I think the problem was the ties, and I'm glad we have done something about it.
I'm no fan of shootouts, but if ties are what is hurting us, than by all means get rid of it.
I think the real issue for recruits is the style of play of the individual team rather than the league as a whole, but I could be wrong.

Win in reg - 3 WCHA points (2 NCAA pts)
Win in OT - 2 WCHA points & 2 NCAA pts
Win in SO - 2 WCHA points & 1 NCAA point
Lose in OT - 1 WCHA point & 0 NCAA points
Lose in SO - 1 point in both systems
Lose in reg - a big 0 across the board.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

"All 10 WCHA teams will install the 40-inch goal frame that is standard across the NHL. A vast majority of WCHA arenas in 2015-16 had the 44-inch frames that long have been a staple of college hockey."

I had no idea nets were different between college and NHL

I like the 3 point system and wish the NHL would adopt it. Some NHL games award 3 points and some award 2. That's goofy.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

It's more like this:

Win in regulation: 3 WCHA points (NCAA win)
Win in 5-on-5 OT: 3 WCHA points (NCAA win)
Win in 3-on-3 OT: 2 WCHA points (NCAA tie)
Win in shootout: 2 WCHA points (NCAA tie)
Lose in shootout: 1 WCHA point (NCAA tie)
Lose in 3-on-3 OT: 1 WCHA point (NCAA tie)
Lose in 5-on-5 OT: 0 WCHA points (NCAA loss)
Lose in regulation: 0 WCHA points (NCAA loss)

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

Yes.

And then an interesting shootout format: only one guaranteed shot per team, instead of the usual three.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

Win in regulation: 3 WCHA points (NCAA win)
Win in 5-on-5 OT: 3 WCHA points (NCAA win)
Win in 3-on-3 OT: 2 WCHA points (NCAA tie)
Win in shootout: 2 WCHA points (NCAA tie)
Lose in shootout: 1 WCHA point (NCAA tie)
Lose in 3-on-3 OT: 1 WCHA point (NCAA tie)
Lose in 5-on-5 OT: 0 WCHA points (NCAA loss)
Lose in regulation: 0 WCHA points (NCAA loss)
This is correct as there are no "NCAA points". If there were, there would be a lot more NCAA champions from Atlantic Hockey. The only positive part of all this change is that each game is worth the same number of points regardless of the outcome. The NHL's version of a game being 2 or maybe 3 points depending on how it ends is awful.

I like it... I flew back to BG last year for the BG-Minn. St series and got to watch back-to-back ties. Exciting games yes, but would be nice to actually see somebody win.

Admittedly, I don't mind ties. So I have a hard time following this logic/your thoughts. Why is watching 2 ties less fulfilling than watching team A win Friday and team B win Saturday. If ties bother you that much, aren't you still left feeling empty because the series was tied/shouldn't you be demanding 3 game series, or awarding points based on the total of both games/6 periods?

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

The NHL's version of a game being 2 or maybe 3 points depending on how it ends is awful.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense to punish all other teams because two teams had trouble deciding which one was better on a particular night.

It's perception and not reality. Media bias etc

Matt Thomas' philosophy is open it up. Push offensively. UAA is the ONLY team in the last 3 years that I've seen who doesn't "trap" EVER. Thomas isn't about it. He's recruited for skating and skill during his tenure. He isn't Dean Talafous or Dave Shyiak.

Including UAA in a list of WCHA teams that plays defense first just shows how little you know.

Or it just shows how ineffective UAA is at generating offense.
