2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

BG has a brand new AD, so the "no comment" we got last week might have a lot to do with getting everyone on the same page.

If (and in my opinion it's a big if) BG and MSU were to go to the NCHC I think the WCHA would push its members to vote in favor of ASU. Don't forget about the need to have a D1 school in your conference to get a seat at the NCAA table.

I still stand by ASU has been admitted to the NCHC on condition they work out an arena solution. They're supposed to go to their new conference in 17-18 but I see that getting pushed back due to scheduling issues. Also, it's important to note that ASU's donations to start up the hockey program will only sustain them for 10 years. They need to get to a point where they're getting as close to breaking even as possible.

Interesting comments. I don't think ASU has 10 years worth of money, more like 3 or 4, so I wonder where you got those numbers. If they had plenty of cash they would not be moving the Desert Classic to Prescott.

The annual cost of operating the men's ice hockey program is about $2.5 million and will include 18 new scholarships. The private donations will fund the program for the first 10 years. After that, the burden would fall on the university athletic department.

Maybe someone with a calculator handy can check my math but...
$32M - ($2.5M x 10) = $10M left to build a D-I quality rink. Umm I don't think so, not if they expect to play in the NCHC.

You don't think Year 1 cost a little extra to get going?

Notre Dame 5000 seats, 50 million, three years ago, the Amsoil 5 years ago- 38 mil, Blue cross arena renovations, rochester- 38 mil, The ralph, in todays dollars, 125 mil, I don't know how much the new Bentley rink will cost. I'm guessing at 25.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

The original donation was only to get the program started up.

ASU is trying to work with the Coyotes on their new arena, but it's going to be at least three years before that arena is built and functioning.

I know ASU is going to have to live with above average travel miles/cost, but I don't think ASU has any interest in sharing a facility with the Coyotes in Hamilton, ONT.

I posted this on the Lake State thread, but it mentions s few other WCHA schools as well.

That faculty president is delusional is she thinks she's getting any money from athletics cuts. If cuts come, it'll be out of desperation to balance the budget, and academics will see cuts simultaneously.

WCHA to introduce 3-on-3 overtime and shootout, three-point game and NHL nets for 2016-17
I can live with the net change, but &%$#@! !#%$@%&! can we please just stop following other leagues and do our own thing for once... If we want to ever shed the public perception of being the next Atlantic Hockey stop watching what other leagues are doing and then saying "Oh yeah, I wish we had thought of that... yeah, let's do that too..."

One of the biggest expenses of DI hockey: Student scholarships. In 2015, the university spent nearly $400,000 on scholarships for hockey players...
If the President is trying to make the point of how much hockey drains from the univeristy, I would love to know what a full ride scholarship really "costs" LSSU. It's not like those players are sitting in classes that wouldn't exist if they were not enrolled, taught by faculty that wouldn't be employed if not for hockey, teaching in buildings that would be closed if not for hockey.

If we're talking real cost to the university, the athletes need a dorm room, some food, books.... and??? That's not $400,000 worth of expense. If it was even $10k per player I would be shocked.

I like it... I flew back to BG last year for the BG-Minn. St series and got to watch back-to-back ties. Exciting games yes, but would be nice to actually see somebody win.

I'm not a huge shootout fan, but I doubt many games make it past the 5 minutes of 3 on 3 anyway. Just one guy blows a tire or gets caught out on a long shift and its odd man rush the other way.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

and if Minn. St had won both games in 3 v 3 OT would you still prefer that? I really don't understand the hate for ties. There is nothing wrong with a game not ending with a winner/loser. You wanted YOUR team to win, we all do. I flew all the way to Anchorage and watched my team tie twice. That was annoying, but I certainly would prefer the game have gimmicks to make sure the game has a winner/loser.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

That's not what this is...
I would agree... if there was anything on that list (other than the new Super-Triple-Better America Endorsed-overtime format) that hasn't already been done by another conference. If the NCAA eventually mandates 3v3 for OT, fine then there is no option. But how was the WCHA worse off to just keep doing what they were doing? Everyone didn't want more OT because of all the injuries that will happen during the extra time (that was the justification to avoid a second 5 minute 5v5 OT) and now we're going to pile one OT on top of another and then a single shooter sudden victory (sudden death is no longer PC) shootout on top of that just because we can't have a tie... which still goes on the official NCAA record book as a.... you guessed it, A TIE.

If fans just want to be entertained, bring out the Ice Breakers and Super Chiefs for OT. I know one Baldwin brother and Skipper Day really need the work at this point as the movie royalties are not rolling in like they had hoped...

I would obviously like to see BG win every game they play, pretty sure that's not in the cards, but even with two 3on3 loses they still walk out with the same 2 points as they did with the two ties.
I'm pretty sure I would have seen some great wide open, end-to-end hockey in both of those 3on3 OT's and if MSU made two more plays than BG to get the extra points.....then kudos to them.

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

What's the excuse for this circus nonsense now? There certainly isn't a need for standings tie-breakers or they would have changed the number of points being awarded. It isn't for fan entertainment or they'd have an effing shootout BEFORE EVERY GAME and use the results if the game ended in a tie.

The message here is clearly that league administration thinks that there is something wrong with a tie. Eff them in their stupid ears and eff any coaches that support this stupidity including Matt Thomas if he supported the change. Piling this ignorance on top of the BS the AK legislature is pulling by threatening athletics is just about the effing end of it for me. Pro sports are crap because the athletes and owners are only concerned with money and I gave up on that sort of whoring quite a while ago.

Thanks for turning college hockey into the ECHL. What a waste.

I agree with you, but we're old. My daughter grew up watching USHL and NHL games that had shootouts, so when she saw her first game at MSU-M end in a tie, her reaction was "That was weird." If you've been raised on games that end with a winner, a tie seems abnormal.
