2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

Re: 2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

How far back is it worth looking at the trends on this? 10 years?

GFM

Three years should be sufficient. That's when both Alaskas joined together in the same league, although there would be the occasional opportunity if one of the WCHA or CCHA teams went to one of the early season tourneys in Alaska. This year, of the four that could use both exemptions, one team will play 38, one at 37, one at 36 and one at 34 games.

Well, but I think that you have to go back farther to see how teams that now want 2-for-1s used (or didn't) their Alaska exemptions. I'll probably go back six years, which gives us a roughly-equal data set before and after, ignoring the fact that the CCHA was at 11 and wouldn't let these rough-and-tumble kids from Alabama play in their sandbox.

Couldn't help but notice how corrupt the governor of Alabama and his buddies are. I guess they are going to get what's coming to them after all. maybe that's why.

The fun thing is that they're not even all friends (although Speaker Hubbard and Governor Bentley are). I'm enjoying watching those two and Chief Justice Moore (AGAIN!) implode. All the attention on Bentley is about the tabloid stuff of him sleeping with his adviser when the real deal is that he did everything to scuttle the prosecution of Bentley.

But we'll probably be like Italy and the Biblical dog returning to his vomit and re-elect Moore and/or Hubbard.

Geoff - Don't read this post... just look away.

There was a bit of a reunion last night in my jersey room when these two got back together. If sweaters could talk, what a story they would tell. On the left is the guy who set the WCHA single game record for saves with 76. On the right is the guy who ended that historic WCHA playoff game after 118 minutes (3rd OT) on the 77th shot on goal that night for the Huskies. Crank up the way-back machine to Friday the 13th of March 2015 to relive the ending of the longest game in the 90+ years of Michigan Tech Hockey...

:sobbing: That was an amazing game. By the end, I wasn't even mad that Tech lost.

BGSU has announced the seven players joining the 2016-2017 class.
can't recall the last time a Falcons class announcement happening as early as May 31...but maybe I wasn't paying attentions during all earlier summers.
anybody else coming out with an announcement?

7 guys coming in is odd...beings we only lost 5 guys.

So either they think they still have guys leaving for Pro deals ie..Friedman or they have guys that aren't being brought back that we don't know about yet...ie guys that haven't been playing like Greiner & Pears.

Not really a surprise at all. Last season was rough. There were times last season when you could tell players knew there was nobody to take their place.

Niko Coffman is coming in this fall as well, so there's actually eight slotted in.

yeah Coffman commits on May 26, but is already age 21. so on May 31 they announce that "seven players will join the Falcons for the 2016-17 season" but leave Coffman off. what?
nevermind, the press release is just the summer slow season. obviously too soon to start talking about who's coming and going...especially after last year's late summer surprises.

If Coffman is a verbal commit and not getting any athletic scholarship, they can't announce him until he enrolls and classes start.

Found this link in a completely different discussion but I think it's kind of relevant. It's discussion of the Princeton - Georgetown basketball 1986 first round NCAA game.

The "little schools" are needed; a key part of what has made college sports fun.

Yeah, yeah, I know it's basketball. I have zero interest in the sport, but dam* if the author made that long read worth it.

Hm, having read it, I don't think that it applies to college hockey as much as it really should. March Madness has some of the value that it has because of Georgetown 50, Princeton 49, but a lot of that is because it's on TV (and the author makes that pretty clear). With TV money not a huge issue for college hockey, I don't know how much that helps our cause. Upsets have been going on for a while, and it's nice, but the WCHA just needs wins. We got that with Ferris this year for sure.
