2016 WCHA Offseason; It's All Over, Save Ferris

One hundred votes per day...Clearly the NHL didn't learn anything from the NHL All-Star voting process.

Rumor has it that if Lakeview Arena wins, the NHL will ask if the rink feels their fans would be proud and the rink will be then immediately relocated to Peru where it will be used to host craft shows and minor league rodeos.

thanks for the tech intelligence

That's funny! :D

And sadly, I could see Bettman giving Lakeview the John Scott treatment.

Interestingly they do NOT show a vote total.

More worrisome is what the city will use the money for. The city in general only sees Lakeview as a money drain.

Well, we know that Herr Bettman HATES the Red Wings ;), and Lakeview is in Michigan, whereas South Dakota is a potential developing market in his eyes. Conspiracy confirmed!

You may have noticed that he moved the Red Wings to the Eastern Conference... All part of his master plan to eventually relocate the Red Wings to Nova Scotia as an expansion team in the Federal Hockey League...

Sources: ASU won't join Big Ten Hockey Conference: http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2016/04/25/arizona-st-hockey-big-ten-wcha-nchc/

Arizona State, which played its inaugural season of Division I men’s hockey this past season and is in the process of choosing a conference, is getting closer to that decision. Two sources told WCCO that the Big Ten is no longer in the running to add the Sun Devils, and that the choice is now between the Western Collegiate Hockey Association or the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

A decision from Arizona State is expected within the next two months, a source said, with the Sun Devils officially joining a conference in either 2017-18 or 2018-19 – most likely the latter.

...

The Big Ten, which for more than a hundred years did not have any affiliate members, thought it would be prudent to see how those three new affiliate memberships go before adding any more of them, a source said, and for now at least, is content with seven men’s hockey teams.

If it can be done by 2017-18, that would be awesome, because the WCHA would then finish out its four-year scheduling oscillation (I'm an engineer and like symmetry). But I doubt that ASU will be in a hurry, and if they join the WCHA, I'm going to be that the league will want to push for a 12th team, however that occurs.

Do you think that ASU not making it the B8G makes it more or less likely that there is a major shift out west?

Apparently the Big Ten wanted a program with an arena or at least a plan for one in place. This has been a problem in the NCHC talks as well. I would hope is AzSt does come to an agreement with the WCHA, that there is a strong commitment of at least five or six years.

The WCHA suddenly is in the catbird seat. All these other conferences are making the arena a sticking point. WCHA has travel concerns, so they could force ASU to "Alaska" it and pay for partial (or a majority, if we can do what the CCHA did to UA_) travel costs to the desert.

Realistically we're looking at:
1) ASU independents it up for the next few seasons until a rink is built.
or
2) ASU joins the WCHA for the next few seasons until a rink is built.

The WCHA doesn't need ASU, but they'd be welcoming with open arms to get them used to Division 1 conference play.

best wishes to C. Parayko taking his finals.
oh yeah, while playing with the Blues in the second round.

Easy for you guys to say...when the going got tough, he got out of town! ;) :)

Leaving AFTER the UAF santion year is leaving when things got tough? Lots of players of his caliber (and lower) leave when their pro team wants them. No one can really blame Parayko...

I think that comment was tongue in cheek.

I'm glad we got him for three years. He could have left, easily, after his sophomore year. But I think part of the reason he's been successful as a NHL rookie was the extra year in college.

Looks like those of us saying the style of play and the clutching and grabbing were getting out of control may not have been so far off. This kid is literally giving up a year or eligibility because he thinks it's hurting his future.

As far as I'm concerned the WCHA better get their crap together of officiating. Nothing like the last msu/BSU game should happen again. Interference, holding, hooking, etc needs to be a point of emphasis or top end recruits are going to avoid the league more than they already do.

Articles like this that trash 2/3rds of the league as low-skill hacks won't help either. But he had "nothing bad to say".

Fair point, but it's silly to ignore the meat of what he's saying. We can put our collective head in the sand or acknowledge there is a problem anddo something about it.

And just what other public rational did Krieger have for opting to leave Fairbanks. Maybe he is being professionally polite, but he had nothing bad to say about coaches or teammates. Missing his girlfriend, family, and civilization is probably more accurate, but not necessarily a manly hockey thing to say. Style of play works. You may have thoughts about the WCHA style of play, but don’t read too much into this article. We seldom interfered with anybody bringing the puck up the ice. Cripes, we had 87 goals against. We did all we could to raise the WCHA goals per game average.

Good kid. Nook fans should wish him well. No one should ever hold it against a player for moving on. Life is too complicated to be concerned about what a few beer drinking fans of a niche sport think about how their weekend entertainment experience might be impacted.

I also think it reads into the narrative that NCHC brings. That said... We do have BSU and FSU's "style" which is exactly what he's talking about.

Krieger is a jerk, like 2/3 of the other NCHC players, for leaving UA_, but I have nothing bad to say about the kid. Unfortunately he didn't really think things through. If he's only an average player in the WCHA, he isn't going to get a sniff of ice time in the far superior and more highly skilled NCHC.
